Mae Trisgell yn bartneriaeth drawsffiniol rhwng dwy ysgol sef, Ysgol Gyfun Gymunedol Penweddigac Ysgol Bro Ddyfi. Bwriad Trisgell yw datblygu cyrsiau ar y cyd i ehangu’r nifer o gyrsiau sydd argael i ddisgyblion rhwng 14 - 19 oed. Y nod yw datblygu cyrsiau newydd cyffrous sy’n apelio iddisgyblion ac sy’n berthnasol i gyflogaeth ac addysg ar lefel uwch.
Trisgell is a cross-boundary partnership between two schools namely, Ysgol Gyfun GymunedolPenweddig and Ysgol Bro Ddyfi. Trisgell’s purpose is to collaboratively develop courses to expandthe number of courses on offer to pupils between 14 – 19 years old. The aim is to develop newexciting courses which appeal to pupils and are relevant to employment and education at a higherlevel.

♦ Refine and develop knowledge, understanding and skills thatenhance performance in physical activity.

♦ Students will also have the opportunity to visit variousestablishments that specialise in Physical Education as well asparticipate in a wealth of extra curricular activities e.g. teamcompetitions, school sports and various related courses.

Why Study German?♦ Through studying Modern Languages students are offered
the opportunity to develop their language skills further andextend their awareness of society in the relevant foreigncountry.
♦ In order to compete in a gradually more global world ouryoung people benefit from linguistic opportunities andinternational contacts.
♦ A broad range of skills are developed, such as written andoral communication, research skills, working with others, IT,organisation and skills of analysis.
♦ The A level curriculum offers units which are of interest toyoung people eg Film Studies.
♦ Students within the Department have achieved highstandards at A level, being above the National Averageconsistently in the last five years.
Possible Future Areas for Study♦ It is possible to study languages at Higher Education level in a
variety of combinations. Traditionally students would study alanguage at Single or Double Honours, now due to demandfrom employers and students, many course combinations areoffered eg. Law, Marketing, Mathematics, Film Studies,Classics, Sports Science, Politics, Translation, Music.
♦ Universities in Wales and England offer new and interestingcourses, which fulfil the demands of the world of work.

Why Study BTEC Subsidiary Diplomain Agriculture?♦ Agriculture has formed the basis of rural communities for
decades. The need for efficient progressive modern-dayagriculturalists has never been more important.
♦ This course provides the opportunity for pupils to look atdifferent aspects of agriculture and is a firm foundation for pupilsto further develop their careers in this subject area.
♦ This is a two year course comprising of six modules and isequivalent to one ‘A’ Level. Modules are optional from thoseavailable from the National Diploma and it is also possible forstudents to study 3 modules in order to gain the accreditation ofBTEC Certificate in Agriculture, which is equivalent to one ASlevel.
♦ Practical experience is gained by visiting Glynllifon, Caernarfonfor one week per term. Assessment is wholly assignment- basedwith no formal external examinations. Students will be requiredto research independently in order to extend their knowledgeand understanding of the subject.
♦ Lessons are provided in the classroom, via video-conferencingand practical field work visits.
Possible Future Areas for Study♦ Students may progress to study HND and degree courses in
agriculture.
♦ Other areas of progression would include, veterinary nursing,animal care, environmental and land-based studies.

Pam Astudio BTEC Diploma Eiladolmewn Amaethyddiaeth?♦ Mae amaethyddiaeth wedi bod yn rhan bwysig o gymunedau
gwledig ers degawdau. Mae’r angen am amaethwyr effeithiolsy’n edrych yn fanwl ar eu sustemau cynhyrchu yn bwysicachheddiw nag erioed o’r blaen.
♦ Mae’r cwrs yma yn rhoi’r cyfle i fyfyrwyr edrych ar wahanolagweddau o fewn amaethyddiaeth. Mae’r cwrs yn rhoi sylfaencadarn i ddisgyblion sydd eisiau datblygu eu gyrfa o fewn ymaes pwysig yma.

Why Study Religious Studies?♦ The subject offers the student an opportunity to develop an
interest and enthusiasm for the study of religion, and helpsthem develop an enquiring, critical and empathetic view onmoral issues.
♦ Pupils who have studied the subject have studied the subjectin Universities in Wales, England and Scotland.
♦ Other students having studied A Level have studied othersubjects at Cambridge and Oxford.
♦ Many past students have succeeded in the education sectorand in the medical profession.
Possible Future Areas for Study♦ You can continue to study the subject for a University degree.
Even if you do not, what you have learnt will help you in awide range of other subjects.
♦ Religious Studies can be studied in many different colleges inWales and England. Cardiff and the University of St David’sTrinity offer a wide range of courses.
♦ Courses such as Ethics, Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy,World Religions, Christianity, Theology, Religion and theMedia may be studied at a degree level.

Why Study Biology?♦ Biological careers can be various, fascinating and rewarding.
Biologists frequently play a pivotal role in dealing with variouschallenges that face society. Through studying the subjectstudents are given the opportunity to develop their practical,reasoning, interpreting, evaluating and communication skills.
♦ Over the years the department has gained excellent AdvancedLevel results which have enabled students to pursue theirchosen university courses.
Possible Future Areas for Study♦ Biology is a subject that opens doors to many career
pathways including medicine, veterinary science,physiotherapy, radiography, marine science, sport science,nursing, environmental studies and teaching.
♦ Past students have been extremely successful in all the abovefields and many are now employed locally due to their abilityto converse fluently in both Welsh and English.
♦ Almost all universities offer courses associated with aspectsof biology and students are advised to consider the optionsavailable to them early in the Advanced Level Course.

the business world including the dynamic, changing andcompetitive environment in which businesses operate. Why Study Art?♦ This qualification offers a practical course with maximum
opportunities for developing practical skills by providing a rangeof experiences, and a variety of techniques, materials, equipmentand resources.
♦ Art is an enjoyable course of study which is designed as a naturalprogression from the GCSE course. Students are encouraged tobuild on and extend previous ideas and experiences. The abilityto produce observational drawings of a high standard is essential.
♦ Students are encouraged to present work professionally.
♦ Students are shown how to criticise each others workconstructively and evaluate the work of other artists, designersand craftspeople in relation to their own work.
♦ Work will be produced based on the work of artists, designers,craftspeople or the Art of a particular culture or movement inhistory.
♦ Students are encouraged to attend the Art Department’s extracurricular weekly Art Club, and make use of the department’sfacilities during the lunch hour. Students are also invited to attendvarious visits organised by the department.
♦ Workshops will also be provided by craftspeople and artistsduring and after school hours.
♦ Students are also encouraged to attend life drawing classes.

Why Study Chemistry?♦ Chemistry is a key Science and is a popular subject to study at
AS / A2 level. During recent years the uptake has beenapproximately 10 – 15 students per year. Of these, themajority progress to A2 level.
♦ Results are consistently above the National Average.
♦ The course is very demanding and requires a genuinecommitment from the outset. Students are expected to spendtime outside lessons doing further work in order to expandtheir knowledge. In order to facilitate this, students are alsogiven the opportunity to join Chem Net which provides helpand support both online and through the issue of monthlymagazines.
Possible Future Areas for Study♦ Chemistry is now an essential subject for many University
courses including Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy andBiochemistry. It is also very desirable for students who wish tostudy subjects such as Medicine, Veterinary Science andDentistry.
♦ It is also possible to study Chemistry in association with othersubjects such as Biology, Physics and even Foreign Languages.Many University courses now offer a year’s study abroad and /or industrial placements.

Why Study Geography?♦ By studying Geography at A Level pupils will be able to
develop a number of useful skills such as, problem solving,analytic skills, environmental and social awareness, working asa team, computer literacy, awareness of place, numeracy andcommunication and research skills.
♦ Every pupil has achieved A-E grades with over 90%consistently achieving to gain A-C grades annually. Onaverage between 12-15 pupils choose to follow the subjectannually.
♦ Several of the pupils that have chosen Geography for A Levelhave achieved to gain a First class honours degree inGeography or other subjects eg Law; Modern Languages.
♦ Pupils have won places at Oxford.
♦ Several pupils have gained scholarships at Welsh universities.

Why Study Drama?♦ The course offers various experiences to students including
the completion of practical projects based upon set pieces ofdrama and original devised work.
♦ Students will have the opportunity to develop a broad rangeof skills within the theatre including, performing, directing,design, creative writing as well as technical skills. There willalso be an opportunity to experiment with technical skillswhen developing creative practical work.
♦ Visits and workshops lead by experts in various relevant fieldsare also arranged.
♦ Students are also expected to undertake research work byfrequently visiting the theatre, reading a variety of plays andexperiment when creating performances e.g use of sitespecific locations.
♦ By undertaking the study of drama students are expected tocontribute to and support open evenings, productions and theschool’s drama club.

n Why Study Design andTechnology: Product Design?♦ The Design and Technology course offers an unique

♦ It builds upon the knowledge, understanding and skillsestablished by the National Curriculum and GCSE, whilst atthe same time, accommodating the needs of candidateswho have not studied Design and Technology at GCSE level.
♦ The course promotes progression through the AS and Alevel and provides a suitable foundation for the study ofDesign and Technology, or a related area of study, atfurther or higher education and / or preparation for futureemployment and the world of work.

♦ Pupils have gone on to successful careersafter completing the course. Why Study French?♦ Through studying Modern Languages students are offered the
opportunity to develop their language skills further andextend their awareness of society in the relevant foreigncountry.

Why Study Mathematics?♦ Studying mathematics to Advanced Level sets a challenge to pupils
who enjoy dealing with algebra, trigonometry, forces and statistics.
♦ The Advanced Level results of the Mathematics Department havebeen consistently excellent, with about 60% of candidates gaininggrade A.
♦ Several activities have been held in conjunction with themathematics department of Aberystwyth University during thepast few years.
♦ Surveys have shown that those who study mathematics to ‘A’ levelcan earn a wage of up to 10% more than their contemporaries.
♦ Aberystwyth and Swansea universities areparticularly enthusiastic in attracting Welshstudents. Aberystwyth University can offer someopportunities to study through the medium ofWelsh, and this department co-operates closelywith the Physics Department. Recent researchthere concentrated on errors in weather forecasting!Statistics is a strength here as well.
♦ Swansea University also offer tutorials through themedium of Welsh , and they offer courses whichcombine mathematics and the financial world , byusing calculus to model market tendencies.‘WIMCS’, the organisation established to encourage
mathematics in Wales, has its headquarters withinthis department.
♦ There are several attractive career options forstudents who wish to study mathematics. For thosechoosing to remain in education, extra money isavailable to train as mathematics teachers.
♦ There is an opportunity to study engineering, andwork in the world of planning and the dynamicconstruction industry.
♦ Mathematicians are much in demand for work in thebanking and trade sector, with world-wide openings.

Why Study BTEC Level 3 90-creditDiploma in Engineering?♦ The qualification has been designed to give new entrants to
the engineering sector the underpinning knowledge andspecific skills needed to meet the needs of modernmechanical engineering industries.
♦ The course will provide learners with the requiredunderpinning knowledge of health and safety, mathematics,science, communications and project planning andimplementation for success in the specialist units and theengineering workplace.
♦ The qualification is equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels over a period oftwo years.

Why Study English Language?♦ AS/A Level English Language has been offered to pupils at
Penweddig for the last seven years. We’re very proud of thiscourse as few local educational institutions give youngpeople the chance to study English Language as well asEnglish Literature at A Level.
♦ Examination results are very good and it is generallyrecognised that a qualification in English Language testifiesto good communication and analytical skills.
♦ You should consider this course if you enjoy reading andwriting and like to analyse people’s use of the written andspoken word.
♦ Pupils who choose to study mathematics and sciencesometimes opt to do English Language as a fourth subject.
♦ It is also possible to study English Language alongsideEnglish Literature. Other pupils, who have decided tospecialize in Modern Foreign Languages, have valued theEnglish Language course for its emphasis on grammaticalanalysis.
Possible Future Areas for Study♦ It’s a qualification which is particularly suited for those
interested in the media, especially journalism. Manyuniversity courses in English include aspects of EnglishLanguage as well as Literature or you could choose to studylinguistics.
♦ Indeed the study of English Language is a good basis for awide range of courses and careers and this no doubt explainsthe popularity of the course in the school.
♦ Of course not everyone goes on to university, but fewemployers would want to dismiss a candidate with provenskills in the English language.

Why Study English Literature?♦ English Literature is a well-established, popular A Level course
at Penweddig. Results have been consistently good over theyears with several pupils from Penweddig going on to studyEnglish Literature at university, including Oxford andCambridge.
♦ This is the subject for you, if you enjoy reading and valueindependent thought. Whilst we consider the traditionalcritical views, the emphasis is always on the pupil’s ownindividual response.
♦ It is a highly disciplined, academic subject and a degree or ALevel in English Literature is seen as qualification of note.
♦ Employers like people who can think clearly and take theinitiative; the study of English Literature helps to prepare youfor any career where sensitive thought and goodcommunication skills are valued.

Why Study Level 2 Certificate in Hair Services?♦ The qualification provides information and understanding
about the hairdressing industry and the skills needed. It alsoprovides and insight into the types of jobs and sectors of workthat are associated with the industry. This will assist studentsto make informed choices about their future careers.
♦ The qualification provides a taste of the hairdressing industry,and although it is not a full NVQ qualification, it is a steptowards reaching a Level 2 NVQ. There is an academic aspectto the course as well as the practical element.
♦ The qualification is worth 3 x A* - C GCSE’s.
