    ABSTRACT

In the present’s time, with the higher standard of

living and the fully awareness of people, the

number of students having the chance to attend

colleges and universities is rising signicantly.

However, apart from students who live with their

family, there are many students who have to

leave their hometowns and live in big cities

without parents, which means that they will have

to cope with a wide range of diculties.

!ur research was conducted on the students of

    "aculty !f #anagement and $ourism % Hanoi

&niversity '"#$( to nd out the main troubles

they have to face and ma)e some suggestions as

well as recommendations. *t the end of the

research, we will gather all the information in a

brief conclusion that students have more

problems while living far away from family and

they have in+uences on students’ P* 'reat

Point *verage(. -e hope that through this

research, people can understand more thoroughly

about the burdens of students living far from

home and help them to solve some of their

     problems.

    I. Intro!"t#on

Thanks to higher living standard and the raising awareness of the population, many

students have the chance to attend colleges and universities after finishing high

school. Student’s life sounds and is without doubt an interesting and useful journey

for all students. However, students, apart from who live with their families during the

period of university, have to face with many problems arising from independent life.

In spite of the ecited feeling to turn the page of their lives to a new chapter, they

have to consider where to live, how to manage their lives and at the same time, their

families have to financially prepare to support them. !oreover, these issues seem to

have certain effects on the academic results of these students. !any students, in fact,

can’t figure out the solution for their matters. It is inevitable that universities as well

as teachers are somewhat responsible for assisting them to overcome their difficulties.

Therefore, to get deeper insights into students’ issues, especially "!T #"aculty of

!anagement and Tourism$ students, when living away from their family and present

some suggestions to prevent academic issues, we had implemented a project called

%&roblems of students living away from family'. (long with the aim of finding more

about finance budget of students, we want to understand students’ feelings when they

move to a new place to enroll in universities and what they find the most difficult to

adapt to as well as how the fact of living without family influences their academic

outcomes. (s a result, we hopefully offer some recommendations which they can

apply to improve their outcomes. )ur project was specifically carried out step by step

from designing, delivering, collecting, analy*ing data and give out recommendation.

(pplying our knowledge about Statistics theories, we process data by means of both

+escriptive Statistics #using numerical and graphical methods to summari*e and presenting data by numbers of charts and tables$ and Inferential Statistics #using ttest

for population mean to test the hypothesis$. "inally, we came into conclusion that

students bear more burdens when they are living far away from their families and this

somehow has impact on their -&( #grade point average$

(s mentioned before, we conducted this project to inspect the average budget of "!T

students who are not living with their families and compare the -&( between them

and other "!T students. (s a result, we paid attention to the population of all "!T

students in Hanoi niversity. In order to complete this goal, we selected a sample of

/00 "!T students to get involved in this project.

    +. ,!est#onna#re es#&n

This 1uestionnaire includes 2 1uestions in order to help us obtain information about

the common matters for students and the relevance between these matters and

    students’ -&(s.

In particular, the first 1uestion is to categori*e students into two groups which are

students living independently and ones living with their families. If students’ answer

is %3es', they will be re1uired to give data about their monthly budget and state

whether they find it enough or not for their epense. (fter that, this group moves to

1uestion 4, which is to determine their emotions before beginning to live by

themselves. 5uestion 6 wants all /00 students, based on their personal eperiences

and their friends, to give their opinions about difficulties a student might face without

families’ presence by ranking 7 problems from the most common to the least. (ll /00

students are also re1uired to choose which one of offered options on 1uestion 8

restricts them from get adjusted to city life. Then the two groups are offered to

provide data on their average grades, respectively. "inally, students can epress their

attitudes about whether living alone has an effect on students’ grades.

    -. Sa%*le s#e/

(fter considering fundamental factors which can have impacts on our outcomes such

as the population si*e that we were interested in studying, the degree of uncertainty

associated with a statistical inference, the test we plan to apply and the available

resources we have, we decided to select a sample of /00 "!T students. 9ecause of

the enormous population and the limitation of the number of members, all the team

members came to agreement on the sample si*e of /00 "!T students which is an

    2

    7/37

applicable and feasible si*e. 9esides, the larger sample si*e will be beyond our scope

as we intended to undertake a moderatescale project so that we can minimi*e the

eternal factors more easily. To sum up, the sample si*e of /00 "!T students is the

    most appropriate.
