Question:
Shaykh I love you for the sake of All h! In Syria the callers of
misguidance, such
as al-B t who gets people killed with his words, have dominance
so please supportthe people of Sh m even with a word.
Answer from Shaykh Mashh r (hafidhahull h):
The angels spread their wings over the people of Sh m and it is
reported in the Sunan of Aboo
Dawood from Abdull h ibn Busr (radi Allaahu anhu) who said: O
Messenger of All h, choose
for me. All hs Messenger (sallall hu alayhi wassallam) replied:
Upon you is the land of Sh m, for it is
the purity of All h from His Creation in which are found All hs
pure ones from His servants. The angels spread
their wings over the land of Sh m. 2
The one who resides in Sh m [which is Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and
Palestine] will get the reward
of one who is a Mur bit [stationed] on the condition that he
works to spread the deen and is a

This hadeeth is saheeh and on the authority of Abdull h ibn Haw lah
(radi All hu anhu) not
Abdull h ibn Busr as Shaykh Mashh r mentions. Im m al-Alb n
states about this hadeeth in
verification and edit of the hadeeth in Abul-Hasan Ali bin
Muhammad ar-Rab s book Fad il ush-
Sh m wad-Dimishq (Riyadh, KSA: Maktabat ul-Ma rif, 1420 AH/2000
CE), pp.27-31 that be
hadeeth is found in: Ibn As kir, T r kh ; at-Tabar n ; Sunan of
Ab Dawood and Musnad Ahmad and
al-H kim. Some routes of the hadeeth are narrated by al-Irb d
ibn S riyah and Ab Um mah, radi
All hu anhum . The hadeeth does not include the part about The
angels spread their wings over the
land of Sh m for that is in another saheeh hadeeth narrated by
Zayd bin Th bit (radi All hu anhu)
and reported by at-Tirmidh ; al-Fasaw , T r kh , vol.2, p.301;
Ibn Hibb n, Saheeh , hadeeth no.2311;
al-H kim, al-Mustadrak , vol.2, p.229; Ahmad, Musnad , vol.5,
p.184; at-Tabar n ; Ibn Asaakir,
T r kh Dimishq , vol.1, pp.112-115 and al-H kim commented: The
hadeeth is authentic on theconditions of Shaykhayn.

guardian of creed and good character, and has honour for All hs
sanctities, this is a Mur bit in
the path of All h. What is taking place in Syria is due to a
wisdom which All h wants, the
incredible events which are taking place by All h my brothers.
Before what is happening now
occurred I used to reflect often to myself about Sh m and Syria.
All h wants good by what is
taking place now, does All h want the virtue and the command to
return to it? I hope that what
is occurring now in Syria will bring forth the establishment of
our brothers from Ahl us-Sunnah.
There is clear sectarian conflict taking place and the people
ruling over Sh m [i.e. Syria] are
Nusayr B tin s upon b til about whom Shaykh ul-Isl m Ibn
Taymiyyah stated in Majm al-
Fat w : They are more harmful to Isl m and the Muslims than the
Jews and Christians.
They are more harmful and before Bayt ul-Maqdis was purified
from the Crusaders all of the
B tiniyyah were apprehended and killed. Sh m is the cemetery of
the crusaders, Sh m is the
cemetery of the Mongols and Sh m is the cemetery of the corrupt
evil doers and within Sh m
the Sunnah of All h does not change. The second despatch of the
people of deen is from the
land of Sh m the first one being from Madeenah and this is the
Sunnah of All h about which the
Prophet (sallall hu alayhi wassallam)informed. Thus, the land of
Sh m is upon goodness and what
is hoped is that All h will ordain goodness for the people of
Syria and liberate them from those
who show no protection to them and give no concern either to the
old or the young, the youth
or the elder, the women or the men. I ask All h to hasten their
end and to purify these lands
from every shirk and dhulm for He, glory unto Him, is Ever-Able
to do that.
