This season’s Meteor Shower collection from

Larry Jewelry uses white gold and precious

gems to create a range that catches the light

like no other. These earrings feature four

pear-shaped 0.97-carat diamonds and 64

round brilliant 1.66-carat diamonds, whose

Famous Italian designer Roberto Cavalli

recently opened a fagship store in the Shoppes

at Marina Bay Sands complex. Known for

his exuberant prints and his love of feminine

sensuality, Cavalli designs clothes that make

UNCHARTED TERRITORY

Quintessentially British brand Burberry

takes inspiration from travel writer Bruce

Chatwin’s journeys through uncharted lands

for its menswear collection this season. Big

block colours are featured across relaxed

tailored trousers and knitwear; a vivid palette

of cyan, cerise and cobalt blues contrasts with

punches of yellow, burnt orange and red.

The staple trench coat is reinvented in deep

plum nubuck suede. The Burberry spring/

Singapore will be buzzing in 2015 as it

celebrates 50 years of independence.

The SG50 year of festivities includes

international sporting events, concerts and

timely museum openings – and the celebration

of 50 items, foods and customs that have

become symbols of Singapore.

These 50 symbols not only resonate with

the city-state’s past and present but they also

defne its character. Food features prominently:

chicken rice, often regarded as the city-state’s

national dish, represents the region’s Hainan

culture; chilli crab echoes the colours of the

fag; and the popular dessert ice kacang, made

with shaved ice, red beans, sweet corn, grass

jelly, sugar and syrup, refects its warm climate.

Other symbols are less tangible. Singaporeans’

habit of queuing for product launches and

special events features in the list, as does the

city-state’s ban on chewing gum, the locals’

love of line dancing and the particularly

personable taxi drivers.

‘The 50-year mark is a profound milestone

for our nation, as it is in the life of any person

and any group of people,’ said Heng Swee

Keat, chairman of the Singapore50 steering

committee. ‘It will be an opportunity to look

From an omnibus flm to a one-of

concert, a host of cultural events will celebrate

Singaporean talent. The flm, curated by

Royston Tan, will feature seven award-

winning local directors who have created works

celebrating the anniversary. Participating

directors include Eric Khoo, Jack Neo and K Rajagopal. ‘Singapore and our people have infuenced so many aspects of our lives,’ explained Tan to Screen Daily. ‘A lot of heart is to go into this and it is a way for me and the other directors to give back to our country.’

A Sing50 concert will comprise 50 of Singapore’s most emblematic songs. Spanning a range of genres, they will be performed by local artists in each of the four ofcial languages.

Sports enthusiasts can look forward to the Southeast Asian Games (also known as SEA Games) being held in Singapore in June. The games include 36 sports and 402 events ranging from aquatic contests, basketball, cycling and equestrian disciplines to gymnastics, golf, rowing and martial arts.

Singapore’s leading retailers are also participating, with many issuing specially designed products to commemorate the year. Jeweller Risis has launched the Singapore Storytellers collection, a range of fve handcrafted, limited-edition charity pendants.

Carolyn Kan’s fne jewellery line Carrie K caters to those looking for something a little diferent,

as Josh Sims discovers

What diference a day makes. Carolyn Kan was in Italy during a year-long sabbatical when one day she met a silversmith who changed her life. ‘I think jewellery was something I was always interested in and I’d always enjoyed working with my hands,’ says Kan. ‘But I had never really given it much thought. I’d been in such a relentless industry that I hadn’t had much time for anything else.’

Kan arranged to spend a week in Florence

with the silversmith. He spoke no English, Kan

no Italian. By the time Kan left Italy, she’d

decided to give up her job. It was not just any

job: her role had been managing director of the

advertising agency M&C Saatchi in Singapore.

‘I remember making my frst ring. I

was doing a fnal polish and the sun was

coming through the window – this sounds

like a Hollywood cliché, but I had the sudden

realisation that I wanted to be a silversmith,’

Kan explains. After some further training back

in Singapore, she launched her frst collection

in 2009, under the name Carrie K.

Sufce to say the launch went well. The line

is now sold in seven countries; is represented in

Japan by Yuji Yamamoto, son of the designer

Yohji Yamamoto; and has been invited to Paris

Fashion Week. Kan has also launched a web

shop for her distinctive, witty pieces.

Kan’s designs often have a subversive

spirit. Take the Needle Choker, for example,

which is efectively a giant-sized needle bent

around the neck. Or enjoy her punk-inspired

safety pin and paper clip earrings or her

The latter is intended as a humorous comment

on perceptions of Singapore as being all

about order and cleanliness. ‘I wanted to

embrace a mess and show that it can be

beautiful,’ explains Kan. ‘You have to poke

fun at yourself.’

One of Kan’s favourite pieces is the

Razor Cuf bracelet from her recent Reborn

collection, designed to resemble an oversized

razor blade. ‘You need to take a second look

before you realise what it is,’ says Kan. ‘The

design is all about the playful wink.’ It’s an

approach that’s been popular with both men

and women, and Kan is becoming increasingly

interested in targeting the men’s market.

Each Carrie K piece is typically crafted in

silver or a form of gold – rose, yellow, white or

even black – and is made by one of a team of

specialist artisans. Kan’s husband has also now

trained as a silversmith and heads production,

although this is not a typically cosy family

business. Kan has global ambitions. ‘If you’re

going to have a dream it may as well be big and

audacious,’ she comments.

Pieces are also designed to leave material

imperfections in place. ‘People are so used to

seeing everything so cookie-cutter perfect that

there’s now a demand for a more handmade

feel,’ explains Kan. ‘But it’s with quality that’s

good enough to last, so pieces could be handed

down some day.’

Kan has now started to produce fne

jewellery too, using diamonds and platinum.

‘You would have thought that people investing

money in jewellery would want something

classic and timeless, but with growing

afuence there’s a demand for something more

distinctive and individual,’ says Kan. There is,

she says, a sense that classic fne jewellery is all

a bit too serious.

The same can certainly not be said of

the upbeat Kan. The designer describes her

studio as an adult take on a children’s candy

store, and says her two dogs act as a welcoming

committee. It’s a long way from the corporate

boardrooms and big budgets of her past – the

kind of ‘proper job’ that her mother insisted she

work towards when she expressed her teenage

aspiration to interior design.

Does Kan miss the advertising industry?

‘No,’ she answers without hesitation. ‘It was

a crazy, non-stop business, but it was also the

long road to what I’m doing now. The ability

to build a business and pull together a team,

and the importance of creating a clear culture

– all of that comes from my experience in

advertising. The company wouldn’t be where

it is now without that. If you can sell air, then

selling something as tangible as jewellery is

actually quite easy.’

ke tengah pentas sementara negara kota ini

merayakan hari jadinya yang ke-50 dengan

cara uniknya sendiri, seperti dilaporkan Verity

Singapura akan hiruk-pikuk di tahun 2015

karena merayakan 50 tahun kemerdekaannya.

Tahun kemeriahan SG50 mencakup acara

olahraga internasional, konser, dan pembukaan

museum yang bertepatan waktu – dan

perayaan 50 benda, makanan, dan adat yang

telah menjadi lambang Singapura.

Ke-50 lambang ini bukan hanya

membangkitkan kenangan masa lalu dan

masa kini negara kota ini, namun juga

42: A Year Of Celebrations

Tahun Perayaan

Terjemahan Bahasa IndonesiaSelain merayakan masa lalu dan masa

kininya, Singapura sedang merencanakan

masa depan dengan sederet proyek konstruksi

yang dijadwalkan bertepatan dengan SG50.

Galeri Nasional Singapura ditetapkan akan

dibuka di bulan November dan Museum

Nasional Singapura telah mengalami

pemugaran besar-besaran. Lintasan berjalan

kaki baru, yang tepat dinamai dengan Jubilee

Walk (Susuran Yubileum), akan juga dibuka

bersamaan dengan hari perayaan. Lintasan

ini akan melalui sejumlah lokasi bersejarah di

Civic District dan juga memanjang ke daerah

Marina Bay. Lintasan ini akan melewati sebuah

jembatan pejalan kaki antara Merlion Park dan

Marina Promenade.

Dari sebuah flm multitema hingga konser

hanya satu kali, seabrek acara budaya akan

merayakan bakat Singapura. Film ini, dengan

kurator Royston Tan, akan menampilkan tujuh

sutradara lokal peraih penghargaan yang telah

menciptakan karya-karya yang merayakan hari

jadi itu. Sutradara yang ikut serta di antaranya

adalah Eric Khoo, Jack Neo, dan K Rajagopal.

‘Singapura dan rakyat kami telah memengaruhi

begitu banyak aspek kehidupan kami,’ papar

Tan kepada Screen Daily. ‘Segenap hati

tercurah di sini dan inilah cara kami dan para

sutradara lainnya memberi kembali kepada

negara kami.’

Sebuah konser Sing50 akan terdiri atas 50

lagu Singapura yang paling simbolis. Melintas

berbagai genre, lagu-lagu ini akan dipentaskan

oleh artis lokal di setiap dari empat bahasa

resmi.

Para penggila olahraga bisa menantikan

Pesta Olahraga Asia Tenggara (disebut juga

dengan SEA Games) yang diadakan di

Singapura pada bulan Juni. Pertandingan

mencakup 36 olahraga dan 402 lomba, mulai

dari cabang-cabang kontes akuatis, bola basket,

bersepeda, dan berkuda, hingga senam, golf,

mendayung, dan seni bela diri.

Pengecer terkemuka Singapura juga

Setiap aspek liontin ini merayakan Singapura;

bahkan kotak pajangannya menggambarkan

tengaran setempat dan, bila dijajarkan, liontin-

liontin ini menunjukkan betapa cakrawala

negeri ini telah berkembang selama 50 tahun

terakhir.

‘Prakarsa ini bukan hanya mencerminkan

warisan merek kami, namun juga sebuah

kesempatan meningkatkan kesadaran dan

menggalang dana yang sangat diperlukan bagi

masyarakat terpinggirkan di Singapura,’ jelas

Navin Amarasuriya, direktur Risis. ‘Sebagai

sebuah negara, kami telah berhasil karena

rakyat dan semangat masyarakat kami. Sambil

kami bergerak memasuki 50 tahun berikutnya,

sangat genting bahwa kami masih saling

peduli.’

The Hour Glass juga sedang merilis edisi

istimewa untuk menandai SG50. Pengecer

arloji mewah ini telah bermitra dengan

Parmigiani Fleurier, pembuat jam tangan

Swiss, untuk menciptakan Tonda 1950

Squelette, sebuah arloji ekstra tipis dengan

jarum yang memamerkan mekanisme rumit

di dalamnya. Arloji ini dibuat secara manual

seluruhnya dan menjadi sebuah contoh indah

kemahiran kriya dan ketajaman mata terhadap

rincian, sesuatu yang sangat dihargai di

Singapura.

Dari acara budaya dan olahraga hingga

museum nasional baru serta produk edisi

48: Kan Do Attitude

Sikap Bisa Kan

Jajaran perhiasan Carrie K dari Carolyn Kan

melayani mereka yang mencari sesuatu yang

agak berbeda, seperti yang ditemukan Josh

Sims

Sungguh istimewa yang bisa diubah sebuah

hari. Carolyn Kan sedang di Italia selama

setahun masa cuti ketika suatu hari bertemu

seorang pandai perak yang mengubah

kehidupannya. ‘Saya pikir perhiasan adalah

sesuatu yang selalu saya minati,’ ujar Kan ‘dan

saya akan selalu senang turun tangan langsung.

Tapi, saya tidak pernah benar-benar serius

memikirkannya. Saya menggeluti industri

yang bekerja tanpa henti sehingga tidak punya

banyak waktu untuk sesuatu yang lain.’

Kan menyisihkan satu minggu di Florence

bersama si pandai perak. Dia tidak menguasai

bahasa Inggris, Kan tidak mengerti bahasa

Italia. Ketika meninggalkan Italia, Kan

memutuskan untuk berhenti dari pekerjaannya.

Bukan sembarang pekerjaan: jabatannya adalah

manajer pelaksana biro iklan M&C Saatchi di

Singapura.

‘Saya ingat membuat cincin pertama

saya. Saya sedang melakukan polesan akhir

dan matahari bersinar menembus jendela –

ini terdengar seperti kisah klise Hollywood,

namun saya mendapat ilham dadakan bahwa

saya ingin menjadi seorang pandai perak,’

jelas Kan. Setelah beberapa pelatihan lanjutan

di Singapura, dia meluncurkan koleksi

pertamanya di tahun 2009, mengusung nama

Carrie K.

Singkat cerita, peluncuran itu berlangsung

mulus. Label ini kini dijual di tujuh negara;

diwakili di Jepang oleh Yuji Yamamoto,

putra perancang Yohji Yamamoto; dan telah

diundang ke Pekan Mode Paris (PFW). Kan

juga telah meluncurkan sebuah toko web untuk

kepingan perhiasannya yang khas dan jenaka.

Rancangan Kan sering mengusung

semangat subversif. Ambil misalnya Needle

Choker atau Pencekik Jarum, yang sebenarnya

jarum ukuran besar yang diliukkan di seputar

leher. Atau nikmati anting-anting pin dan

klip kertas yang diilhami budaya punk atau

koleksi Beautiful Mess (Keamburadulan Elok),

karyanya yang berbahan dasar kulit. Yang

terakhir ini dimaksudkan sebagai komentar

jenaka tentang persepsi Singapura sebagai

negeri serba tertib dan bersih. ‘Saya ingin

merangkul keberantakan dan memperlihatkan

bahwa itu bisa cantik,’ papar Kan. ‘Anda harus

bisa mencandai diri sendiri.’

Salah satu benda favorit Kan adalah

gelang Razor Cuf (Kerah Pisau Cukur) dari

koleksi barunya Reborn (Lahir Kembali),

yang dirancang agar menyerupai pisau

cukur raksasa. ‘Anda perlu melihatnya dua

kali sebelum menyadari apa itu,’ kata Kan.

‘Desainnya adalah mengenai kedipan canda.’

Inilah pendekatan yang populer bagi pria

dan wanita, dan Kan makin tertarik untuk

menyasar pasar pria.

Tiap karya Carrie K biasanya dibuat

dengan perak atau sebentuk emas – merah

jambu, kuning, putih, atau bahkan hitam –

dan dikerjakan oleh salah satu anggota tim

perajin spesialis. Suami Kan kini juga telah

terlatih sebagai pandai perak dan mengepalai

produksi, walaupun ini bukan usaha keluarga

yang lumrahnya nyaman. Kan memendam

ambisi global. ‘Jika Anda ingin memiliki

impian, sebaiknya yang besar dan berani,’

komentarnya.

Perhiasan kini juga dirancang untuk

menyisakan ketidaksempurnaan. ‘Orang begitu

terbiasa melihat sesuatu yang begitu sempurna

habis sehingga kini ada permintaan terhadap

kesan yang lebih buatan tangan,’ jelas Kan.

‘Namun, dengan kualitas yang cukup bagus

untuk tahan lama, sehingga perhiasan ini bisa

diwariskan suatu hari.’

Kan kini mulai menghasilkan perhiasan

kualitas tinggi juga, dengan memakai berlian

dan platina. ‘Anda mungkin berpikir bahwa

orang yang menanamkan uangnya pada

perhiasan akan menginginkan sesuatu yang

klasik dan abadi, namun dengan kemakmuran

yang meningkat, ada permintaan kuat untuk

sesuatu yang lebih unik dan pribadi,’ kata Kan.

Ada, katanya, semacam kesan bahwa perhiasan

klasik kualitas tinggi sedikit terlalu serius.

Kesan yang sama sudah pasti tidak bisa

dikatakan mengenai Kan yang bersemangat.

Perancang itu menggambarkan studionya

sebagai versi dewasa dari toko permen kanak-

kanak, dan berkata bahwa dua anjingnya

berperan sebagai panitia penyambutan.

Sungguh sangat jauh dengan ruang direksi

perusahaan dan anggaran besar masa lalunya

– jenis ‘pekerjaan bagus’ yang dituntut ibunya

agar ia tekuni ketika ia menyampaikan cita-cita

masa remajanya terhadap desain interior.

Apakah Kan merasa kehilangan industri

periklanan? ‘Tidak,’ jawabnya tanpa ragu. ‘Itu

bisnis gila, tidak ada berhentinya, namun juga

itulah jalan panjang menuju apa yang sekarang

saya lakukan. Kemampuan membangun

sebuah usaha dan menyatukan sebuah tim, dan

arti penting dari menciptakan suatu budaya

yang jelas – semuanya berasal dari pengalaman

もジュビリー・ウォーク)も、祝賀行事と時を同じくし

オムニバス映画から単発コンサートまで、シン

ガポールの芸能を称える文化イベントも多い。ロイス

トン・タンが総監督と務めるオムニバス映画は、50

周年を祝う作品を製作した地元の受賞監督7人を特

集。エリック・クー、ジャック・ネオ、K・ラジャゴパル

などの映画監督が名を連ねている。「シンガポールと

シンガポール国民は、私たちの生活の様々な側面に

影響を与えてきました」と、タンはスクリーン・デイリ

ー紙に語っている。「この作品には深い魂が込めら

れます。私と他の映画監督から国への恩返しだとい

う思いで作っています。」

シング50コンサートはシンガポールを代表する

50曲を集めたコンサートで、幅広いジャンルから選

んだ曲を地元アーティストが公用語4言語のそれぞ

れで歌うことになっている。

スポーツ愛好者なら、6月にシンガポールで開催

される東南アジア競技大会(「SEAゲーム」として知

トンダ1950スケレット」を作った。この時計は全工程

手作りで、シンガポール人が特に大事にする職人技

と細部へのこだわりを体現した逸品だ。

キャロリン・カンの高級ジュエリーライン「キャリ

ー・K」は、ちょっと変わった物を探している人にぴっ

たりだ。ジョッシュ・シムズがレポートする。

たった一日で人生がガラリと変わる。キャロリン・カ

ンが人生を転換するきっかけとなった銀細工師に出

会ったのは、イタリアで1年間の休養をとっている時

だった。「ジュエリーにはいつも興味がありましたし、

手作業も好きだったんです」というカン。「ただ、あま

り真剣に考えたことはありませんでした。息つく間も

ない過酷な産業で仕事をしていて、他のことを考え

る暇があまりなかったんです。」

カンは、フィレンツェでその銀細工師と一週間を

過ごすことにした。相手は英語が話せず自分はイタ

リア語ができない状況だったが、イタリアを去る頃に

は仕事を辞める決心をしていた。それも並の仕事で

はない。広告代理店M&Cサーチのシンガポール現

地法人のマネージングダイレクター職だった。

「初めて指輪を作った時のことを覚えています。

仕上げの研磨をしていた時に陽光が窓から差し込ん

は説明する。その後シンガポールでさらに修行した

キャリー・Kの作品は、シルバーやゴールド(ロ

ーズ、イエロー、ホワイト、ブラック)で作られること

が多く、専門職人のチームが手掛ける。カンの夫も

銀細工の修行をし、今では生産部門を率いている。

とはいえ、彼らのビジネスはこじんまりした家族経営

からは程遠い。カンの目は国際市場に向いている。「

同じ見るなら、大それた不敵な夢を見なくちゃね。」

作品は素材の不完全さを残すデザインでもあ

る。「何でもかんでもクッキーカッターで抜いたよう

に完璧なのが当たり前になっているので、かえって

手作り感が求められているんです」と、カンは説明す

る。「ただ、それも品質があってこそ。長く使えていつ

か次世代に伝えられる良質なものです。」

カンは、ダイアモンドやプラチナを使った高級ジ

ュエリーも作り始めた。「ジュエリーにお金を投資す

る人は古典的で飽きの来ないものを求めていると思

いがちですが、富が増すにつれてもっと独特で個性

的なものに対する需要が出てきています」というカ

ン。古典的な高級ジュエリーはちょっと真面目すぎる

という気分があるのだという。

真面目すぎるという評は、陽気なカンには確か

に当てはまらない。彼女いわく、スタジオは「子供向

けのキャンディ屋の大人版」みたいで、二匹の愛犬

が歓迎してくれるのだという。会社の重役会議室に

座って巨額予算を扱っていた過去(インテリアデザ

インを志したいと言ったティーンエージャーのカンに

母親が目指せと説いたような「ちゃんとした仕事」)

とは大違いだ。

広告業界を去ったことを寂しく感じるかとの問

いに、躊躇なく「いいえ」と応えたカン。「目まぐるし

いノンストップの仕事でしたが、私が現在やっている

ことに続く長い道でもありました。事業を立ち上げて

チームをまとめる能力と、明確な企業風土を創り出す

ことの大切さ。それらは全て、広告業界で学んだこと

です。あの経験が無ければ、今の会社はありません。
