What sparked our Inquiry?

What is Mindset? Fixed Mindset:

In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits.

People who hold these beliefs think that “they are the way they are.”

What is Mindset? Growth Mindset:

In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point

This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.

Let’s Identify…

Where do we see these behaviors?

Our students?

Ourselves?

Characteristics of Each Mindset

Students will most likely not come to you with Will Smith’s mindset. That’s okay.

It IS possible to change from one to the other. Can and should be taught to all children.

Study by Dweck and Lisa Sorich Blackwell of low-achieving seventh graders. All students participated in sessions on study skills, the brain and the like; in addition, one group attended a neutral session on memory while the other learned that intelligence, like a muscle, grows stronger through exercise. Training students to adopt a growth mind-set about intelligence had a catalytic effect on motivation and math grades; students in the control group showed no improvement despite all the other interventions.

We have a confession...

Our question now… Why do we feel the need to be

validated?

Picture your world without constant validation…

Now, as a teacher…what would your classroom look like? WHO ARE YOU when there’s nobody to validate your actions?
