A Message from Father Jim . . .

Commitment to the Kingdom

One of the local television stations refers to their election coverage as “Commitment 2016”. The obvious meaning

is that they offer a commitment to cover the election as best they can so that we citizens are informed when we

make our decision at the polls in a few weeks. It is an interesting way to present what they offer. Commitment.

This is a word that gets thrown around these days and not always observed in its truest sense. What commitments

have we made in our lives and how have we lived up to them?

To be a citizen in God's kingdom must involve a total commitment on our part. We cannot pursue the gift of

heaven as we do a part-time job. We cannot work at getting to heaven as we do a hobby. We must give 100% of

ourselves in our pursuit of the Kingdom of God. It involves total dedication. Many times in life we find that we

spend so much time and energy on things that in the end do not matter. At the moment of death there is only one

thing that counts. It is not whether we had a successful career, the biggest house on the block or the most expensive

car. The only thing that will matter is what we have become in the process of trying to live a Christian life during

our time here. In whatever we have tried to do with our life succeeding in that is not as important as what type of

Christian we became in the process of trying to succeed.

Nothing in the world should take priority over God's Kingdom and our pursuit of it. Jesus tells us that what counts

when we die is not what we have acquired in life, but what we have learned about being a disciple of His. Did we

learn to love one another? Did we learn to forgive one another? Did we learn to help the needy? Did we learn to

encourage others? Did we learn to go the second mile for others? Did we learn to turn the other cheek? Did we

learn to become more committed and loyal to God and one another? I hope we can answer "Yes" to all of these

questions. If we can, then we have lived a life in which the achieving the Kingdom of Heaven was our most impor-

tant goal.

God bless you always!

Father Jim Volkert

Boxes of Joy Spread Christmas joy around the world through the “Boxes of

Joy” program, a ministry of Cross Catholic Outreach. You

are invited to join St. Joseph’s Religious Ed Families as we

work together to send 150 children around the world a special

Christmas surprise. There are 5 ways you can help: • Send a monetary donation. It takes $9 to ship a single “Box

of Joy” to a child. $7 is for shipping and $2 goes to the priest, nuns and other lay people who minister to these fami-lies

• Donate small items for the boxes. Donations can be brought to St. Joseph’s Religious Ed office any time. See list for ideas.

• Join us on Wednesday, November 2 in the Parish Center from 6:45-8pm when we will be learning more about the children who will receive our gifts and packing boxes; boxes will be provided. Our goal is to bring “Boxes of Joy” to 150 children!

• Pick up a “Box of Joy” at St. Joseph Parish Office and fill it with gifts from your family. Then bring it during the week of November 5-13 to our Drop-Off Center at the Parish Center in Lyons.

• Volunteer an hour or two during Drop-off Week. We have signed up to be a Drop-off center for these precious boxes. We will need volunteers to be here during the ‘Boxes of Joy” week of Saturday, November 5- Sunday, November 13, to collect and check the boxes that people bring in.

Join our REP Families and bring the joy of Christmas to

those who need it most! For more information or boxes,

MINISTERIO HISPANO
