    look forward to personally welcoming you!

    While I recognize that the challenge of raising the funds you may need in order to participate may appear to be

    quite daunting initially. I do, however, urge you to tackle this task using the same determination and leadership

    abilities that have brought you so much academic success and earned you the honour of being selected to be

    part of this unique leadership experience.

    I am constantly amazed at the resourcefulness of the overwhelming majority of students who attend one

    of our conferences by reaching out to family, friends, schools and using their creative talents to

    outsourcing possible fundraising opportunities in their communities, to meet their accommodation feesand other expenses.

    If you follow the guidelines and suggestions in this Student Fundraising Guide, begin early and

    dedicate the time, energy and effort necessary, I am confident you can meet your full demonstrated

    fundraising goals.

    The years ahead are going to be filled with many challenges. This is one of your first. Remember, notask is too great if you want something enough.

    Leaders Conference Now that you have been selected to take part in this extraordinary leadership opportunity, it is time to

    meet the challenge of finding the funds needed to make your participation possible.

    Each year a significant percentage of outstanding and accomplished student nominees like you take

    on the task of raising the funds they need to attend. It requires planning, hard work and creative

    thinking. Most importantly, it requires a determination to succeed!

    As one of the leaders of tomorrow, you have already proven that you possess all of these skills.

    Therefore, this is a task you can accomplish, and you can actually have fun doing it! You will learn

    tremendously from the experience and will definitely be proud of the results.

    Whether you choose to directly contact family members for assistance, seek sponsors from local

    businesses and organizations in your community, organize a fundraising event or come up with your

    own ideas, fundraising will help strengthen your presentation and organization skills, demonstrate your

    leadership potential and provide the chance for you to network with a wide variety of people. You will

    discover there are many people who are excited about helping you achieve your goals.

    A major key to your fundraising success is to understand that there is funding opportunities available

    for you. You just have to put together the right plan to access it.

    WHY FUNDRAISE? Attending a GSLC conference is a phenomenal

    opportunity for personal growth, leadership development

    and educational advancement. As important as it is,

    many students and families are unable to pay for the

    entire conference themselves, so they fundraise to make

    up the difference. In fact, more than 60% of all GSLC

    students fundraise to cover a portion of their expenses.

    They do it and so can you!

    Fundraising takes creativity, planning, hard work and

    perseverance. Do those sound like traits of a leader? Yes!

    Think of fundraising as part of your leadership training.

    You may find, like many past participants, your

    fundraising efforts will not only help you grow, they will

    become part of your overall GSLC experience.

    This guide is filled with planning advice, ideas,

    tools and materials to help you reach your

    fundraising goal. Follow it step-by-step or take the

    ideas and create your own plan. Whatever you do,

    have fun and remember each step brings you closerto making your GSLC experience a reality!

    Leaders Conference STEP 1: SET YOUR GOAL

    The path to success begins with a clear goal,

    which in this case is the amount of money you

    need for conference accommodation and fees,

    transportation and spending money. Use the

    formula below to calculate your fundraising

    target.

    First, estimate the total amount you will need:

    Next, identify funds already available to you. Your

    parents or other family members may help pay for

    the conference, or you may have money saved.

    Once you determine how much you have, subtract

    it from the amount needed to come up with your

    fundraising goal.

    STEP 2: SOLICITSPONSORS

    Once you know what you want to accomplish, its

    time to get started.

    Make a list of everyone you know, including friends,

    neighbours, relatives, teachers, coaches and your

    doctor and dentist, using the form in the back of this

    guide. Ask your parents for a list of their friends and

    business associates and find out if their employers

    are willing to contribute. Dont leave anyone out.

    Remember, everyones a prospect.

    Next, expand your list to include businesses and

    organizations in your area, which should be available

    from the Chamber of Commerce. Find out if there are local chapters of the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club,

    Lions Club and other similar organizations you

    can add.

    Insiders Tip:

    Dont limit your prospects to peopleyou think might contribute large sums.Even small contributions can help!Make two lists: one with people whowould likely contribute $20-$50 andanother with those who might give $50or more. Having two lists will help youprioritize and focus your efforts.

    STEP 3: GET THEWORD OUT

    There are several ways to let potential sponsors know

    what youre doing and how they can help. These

    include letters, emails, phone calls, meetings, easy-to-

    do events and online social media. The best

    fundraising campaigns include a mix of activities.

    Before making your first contact, put together a

    fundraising packet to give potential sponsors. This

    can be a pocket folder containing a letter, a

    biographical sketch and information about GSLC .

    Use the sample letters in this guide as they are oradapt them to your personal style.

    Your biographical sketch should be a one-page

    overview describing your education (where you go to

    school, your GPA, etc.), your community involvement,

    your extracurricular activities and your goals. Dont be

    shy; this is your chance to present yourself in the best

    possible light! Sponsors should mail their donations

    directly to you.

    Phone Calls and Meetings Call potential sponsors and request a brief meeting.If you get an appointment, bring your fundraising

    packet and use it to guide your discussion. I f youre

    not able to schedule a meeting, mail the packet andmake a note to follow up with a phone call.

    Keep a list of everyone you contact, along with phone

    numbers, addresses, email addresses and the dates

    you spoke or mailed your fundraising packets.

    Letters

    Sending letters is a simple, inexpensive and effective

    way to request sponsorships. Start with the sample

    Facebook, MySpace and Other Social Media

    If you have a Facebook, MySpace or other

    social media page, use it to spread the wordabout your fundraising campaign.

    Add a l ink to www.global -scholar.org

    You can also add a note to your Facebook page and

    send it to your friends. Post video clips from the

    GSLC website and invite all your sponsors and

    prospects to view them.

    Blogs

    A blog is another easy way to get the word out. If you

    dont already have one, theyre easy and free to create

    at www.blogger.com or www.wordpress.com . You can

    use it to post details about the program, the amount

    you need to raise, what you hope to accomplish, your

    career aspirations and other information that will

    inspire people to sponsor you. Be sure to include a

    link to www.global-scholar.org so your potential

    sponsors can learn more about what youre doing.

    A blog is also a great way that you can keep your

    sponsors updated as you get ready for your

    conference. D ont forget to post messages and

    photos about your conference experience while

    youre ther e or shortly after you return home.

    Media You can reach a large number of potential sponsors by

    sending press releases to the local media (e.g., community

    and school newspapers and radio and television stations).

    Look for the press re lease on the

    GSLC Official invitat ion s and includ e i tas a cert if ied true cop y of authenticate

    document .

    Another way to use the media is to write a letter to the

    editor of the local newspaper or magazine. Describe

    what youre doing and ask them to support you by

    publicizing your fundraising efforts. Include a list of

    your fundraising activities that might be of interest to

    the general public, such as a car wash, bake sale or

    book sale, along with dates and times.

    Dont forget your church/synagogue/mosquebulletin. Theyre often looking for interesting itemsfrom the congregation and may be happy to helpyou solicit donations.

    School Newspaper and Online Newsletter

    Dont be shy about telling your school community.

    Submit an article or press release to your schools

    newspaper and online newsletter and ask that they

    help you get the word out.

    Insiders Tip:

    Its best to ask sponsors to give orsend checks rather than cash so youcan keep track of what you receiveand make sure your payment reachesGSLC by the due date, and be madepayable to Internat ional President ialScholars Counci l with your Scholar ID and EnrollmentCode included on the memo line.

    Create Your Own Web Page, Send Emails andManage Your Fundraising Online Design your own website, upload and manage your

    address book, send emails to your friends and family,

    collect donations and monitor your progress all in one

    place.

    STEP 4: CREATE BUZZ

    Nows your chance to think outside the box! You

    can generate excitement and raise significant

    dollars when you give people creative and concrete

    ways to get involved and support your fundraisingefforts. Here are some ideas to get you started:

    Sponsor-a-Day Instead of asking for $50 or $100, ask prospects to

    sponsor one day of the conference. Divide your total

    conference expense by days to come up with the amount.

    Show the prospect the sample conference schedule and

    let them pick the day they want to sponsor. Commit to

    document your activities on that day in a letter, email or

    blog, and be sure to follow through.

    Leaders Conference Sell Stock in Yourself

    An innovative way to present your fundraising request

    is by selling stock in yourself at $100 or $50 per

    share. You might create a prospectus (folder or

    booklet) containing information for potential investors.

    The prospectus should emphasize the benefits ofinvesting in a young leaders future, a description of

    you as an individual (education, achievements,

    volunteer work, career goals), additional information

    about GSLC , the price per share, a description of the

    return on their investment (e.g., an investor newsletter

    or slide show on your conference experience or a

    sponsor reception) and a breakdown of how the funds

    will be used (conference fee, travel expenses, personal

    expenses).

    Incentives

    Give potential sponsors incentives to support you.

    Offer to send daily text messages or emails

    describing events and summarizing what you

    learned. Promise to give a presentation about the

    conference and how it benefited you when you

    return. This can be particularly appealing to yourschool committee, civic groups, alumni associations

    and educational institutions. Tangible evidence of

    your experience helps people feel good about their

    contributions and the impact they made. You can

    also post your presentation on your blog, FaceBook

    or MySpace page and upload your photos to Flickr.

    Events

    Holding an event can be a fantastic way to raise money, be

    creative, give sponsors something in return and generate

    interest in your campaign. Keep it simple, however, so your

    expenses dont exceed the amount you raise!

    Hold a raff le. Ask local s tores, restaurants or

    mov ie theaters to donate gif t cards or o ther prizes,

    then sel l raff le t ickets for a drawing.

    Host a d inner. Invi te f r iends and family to your home

    for a n ice dinner and ask them to subs idize for the meal .

    Charge s l ight ly higher than the cost of the food so that

    you wi l l have a l i t t le excess of surplus to help paying

    your conference expenses .

    Have a garage sale. Gather up items you dont

    need and s el l , sel l , sel l!

    Have a bake sale. Invite yo ur fr iends to a cook ie

    baking par ty and se l l the resu l t s to ne ighbours ,

    family m embers o r at the garage sale.

    Set up a car wash. Ask a local busin ess for the

    use of their parkin g lot for a $5 car wash. Recruit

    your fr ien ds to help ou t and treat them to a pizza

    party afterwards.

    Host a mov ie party. Rent a movie, make som e

    popcorn and invi te f r iends and fami ly over.

    Charge a smal l admiss ion fee as com miss ion .

    Leaders Conference Stage a used book sale. Ask friends, ne ighbours

    and family memb ers to donate old books and sel l

    them in your front yard or at a friends business. Put

    up s igns so peop le know where the money i s go ing .

    Team up with a restaurant for GSLC Night . Ask a

    res taurant to support you by ho st ing a complimentary

    pr ivate dinner for yo ur f r iends , family, c lassmates and

    business acquaintances. Guests pay a cover charge,

    which goes in to your conference fund.

    Offbeat Ideas

    Challenge yourself to come up with unusual fundraising

    techniques that will get peoples attention. For example:

    Change your voicemail message to tel l cal lers

    youre raising money and ask for their help.

    Put a change jar near the doo r at home with a

    s ign ask ing fami ly memb ers and f r iends to d rop

    in their loos e change.

    I s your b i r thday or graduat ion coming up?Ask fo r a l i t t le don ation instead of gif ts .

    Offer to ru n da i ly or weekly e r rands for f r iends

    and fami ly members in exchange for donat ions .

    Work as an in te rn for a loca l bus iness in

    exchange for job exper ience and mon th ly payro l l .

    Start a small businesspilot project in yourschool / community

    Ask a business to save their recyclables and

    offer to take them to the recyc ling centr e in

    exchange for the cash received.

    Leaders Conference STEP 5: FOLLOW UP

    To be successful in fundraisings, you must follow up

    with every prospect that doesnt respond immediately to

    your letter, email or phone call. Wait a week to make

    follow-up phone calls, then speak slowly and clearly,introduce yourself and remind the prospect of your

    previous correspondence. Ask if he/she has decided to

    contribute; if not, suggest a meeting with you to talk

    about the program and your goals. In some cases a

    meeting will not be possible, so have your conference

    information handy so you can have the discussion over the telephone.

    If you cant reach the prospect by phone, send a follow-

    up email. Briefly describe your request, mention your

    previous correspondence and ask if he/she has decided

    to contribute. Offer to meet in person to answer

    questions and discuss the program and your goals.

    Politely ask for a response by a certain date.

    Remember, one follow-up call or email can make the

    difference between receiving a donation and having your

    request pushed to the back burner and forgotten.

    STEP 6: SHOW YOURGRATITUDE

    You cant say thank you enough! If possible, send

    thank-you notes within 24 hours of receiving sponsor

    donations or commitments. Even if someone turns you

    down, write a note to thank him/her for considering

    your request. To keep sponsors involved andnudge those who havent made a decision tosponsor you yet, send occasional email or textupdates on your fundraising progress.

    If any of your sponsors live in the conference city,

    show your appreciation by inviting them to theClosing Ceremony. (Be sure to check with theOffice of Admissions so that space is reserved toaccommodate your guests.)

    As soon as you return home from the conference, send

    notes to all your sponsors, thanking them once again for

    helping make your GSLC experience possible. Tell them

    about the conference and how grateful you are for their

    assistance. Create and send a flyer with highlights and

    photos so they understand how their contributions were

    used and the impact they made in your life. Post your

    conference photos on Flickr or Facebook. Do a presentation

    on the conference for your school and organizations that

    sponsored or supported you. If you received publicity or

    support from the media, send a thank you note and an

    article describing your experiences.

    AND DONTS

    Do!

    Be up front. When you meet with or write to a

    potential sponsor, briefly explain the conference and

    let them know right away youre asking for money.

    Suggest a donation amount. Most people wont

    know how much you need and will find it easier to

    contribut e if they dont have to come up with an

    amount on their own. Do your homework and ask for

    an amount that matches each sponsors resources.

    Convey your excitement. Help prospectsunderstand how important the conference is

    and how it will benefit you.

    Collect the money. People sometimes forget what

    theyve committed to, so as politely as possible, ask

    for payment on the spot.

    Network. Ask people to refer you to otherswho might be interested in helping out.

    Be accurate. Double check titles and spellingof names when sending out letters or emails.

    Dont!

    Dont wait. It may take time for people to think

    about your request and decide to help you. Start

    your fundraising activities now!

    Dont be shy. Demonstrate your leadershipskills with a polite but direct request.

    Dont put all your hopes in one basket. Try avariety of fundraising techniques to help ensureyou reach your goal.

    Dont be discouraged. You will likelyhear No a fe w times, but one positiveresponse usually leads to another.

    WHATS WORKEDFOR OTHERS

    My parents are not the type to just pay my way; Ihave to work for it. Therefore, I sent over 75

    letters to local businesses, groups, and friends

    telling them about the trip within one day. In the

    end, I received more what was required for the

    conference. The extra money went towards a

    digital camera I took to capture the moments.

    Since I had access to a tractor and trailer I cleaned out

    farmers pastures of old equipment and old cars with

    their permission and sold the junk and steel. I was

    able to raise the full amount within 1 month. Levi H.

    I baked cakes, cookies and casseroles and lots of

    other things for days. Then I had a huge bake sale

    in school with help from my classmates. Everything

    sold! We had a lot of fun and raised more than

    Leaders Conference When I got selected for the conference, I wanted to go

    more than anything. My parents told me if I raise another

    20% of the total payment, on top of the awarded 40%

    financial aid, I could attend. That month I went out and

    raised over a thousand dollars; my parents were so

    impressed they helped me pay the rest. It was nt a

    cakewalk but it was definitely worth i t. Dalas M.

    I mailed, sent and delivered over 30 letters to family and

    businesses and got enough money to pay for the entire

    expenditures, it was easier than what I had thought.
