For more than 127 years serving Hillsborough and East Pasco counties, the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA understands what our community needs to be its best. Working with friends and partners like you, the Y provides everyone the opportunity to be healthy and thrive, to connect with others, and contribute to a better community. Everything the Y does makes us – as individuals and a community – better.

Since 1889, the Tampa Y has stayed true to its mission to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Our cause is to strengthen communities. We do this by supporting whole families, serving all ages, and infusing our core values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring at all operational levels.

This annual report captures how the Tampa YMCA built a better youth, a better community and a better us in 2015, focusing on these top Vision 2020 strategic plan priorities:

» Closing the Academic Achievement Gap » Teen Development » Chronic Disease Prevention and Management» Drowning Prevention

The Tampa Y believes all children and teens have potential. But research shows that many youth from underserved and low-income families need extra support in reaching this potential. They often start kindergarten underprepared and fall behind their peers as they progress through school. That academic achievement gap presents not just immediate hurdles for these students, but also long-term challenges for us all.

The Y works with caregivers, students and schools across the Tampa Bay area to close the academic achievement gap through evidence-based programs that improve students’ educational readiness, engagement and outcomes, while helping them grow emotionally and physically, too.

In 2015, the Tampa Y... » Helped 25,836 teens and children cultivate values, life

skills and positive relationships in Y programs like youth sports, day camps and teen development programs.

FOR A BETTERIn 2015, the Tampa YMCA launched a groundbreaking initiative called the Veggie Van – A Mobile Market Place in partnership with the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, Joy McCann Foundation and Bank of America. The Veggie Van takes fresh fruits and vegetables directly to kids and families in the targeted high-need neighborhoods of Sulphur Springs, Tampa Heights, Wimauma Village and Lacoochee. The Veggie Van has served more than 1,678 kids and 692 families in food deserts without ready access to fresh, healthy and affordable food. Watch how the Tampa Y’s Veggie Van is building a better community:

COMMUNITY

The Tampa Y aims to improve the community’s health and well-being by providing programs and activities that promote wellness, reduce risk for chronic disease and help others manage and reclaim their health. These programs and everything else the Y does make us – our Ys and our community – better. The result is a community that values health and supports healthy choices.

In 2015, the Tampa Y...

» Supported, guided and provided resources to 151,031 youth, adults and families to help them achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

» Provided chronic disease prevention & management programs to 500 community members, including the Y Diabetes Prevention Program, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA cancer survivor wellness program and Pedaling for Parkinson’s.

FOR A BETTER US The Tampa Y responds to society’s most pressing needs – like childhood hunger, drowning prevention and generational poverty – with innovative, community-based solutions.

OneinfiveAmericanchildrendoesn’tknow where his or her next meal will come from. Studies show when kids are hungry, they’re more likely to bully others, have trouble focusing in class and struggle with schoolwork. A proper diet is essential to physical, mental, social and emotional development.TheYfillsgapsinaccesstofree meals during the summer and after-school hours by providing year-round healthy snacks and meals to kids who live with food insecurity to help them grow strong and smart.

In 2015, the Tampa Y...

» Served kids over 135,000 healthy meals and 200,000 nutritious snacks in our free Summer Food Program.

» Provided free dinner at Sulphur Springs, Bay Crest, Morgan Woods and Town and Country elementary schools in partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools.

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental childhood death. More children under the age of four drown in Florida than anywhere else in the nation. Further, Hillsborough County regularly ranks among the highest counties nationally for drowning cases in the same age group. To reverse these statistics, the Y offers free and more affordable swimming and water safety courses so that they’re available to everyone.

In 2015, the Tampa Y...

» Taught 7,493 children invaluable swimming skills.• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

» In partnership with the Tampa Bay Rays, United Way Suncoast and the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County: - Provided 1,416 Y summer campers with free water safety and swim lessons through the Go for Green program. - Provided 525 kids with free water safety and swim lessons through SPLASH! Week.

» Taught 105 children free water safety and swim lessons in apartment complex and neighborhood pools through the Mobile Water Safety Team “Be Water Smart from the Start” initiative in partnership with the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County and others.

As one of the Tampa Bay area’s oldest and longest-serving public charities, the Y’s life-changing work is possible thanks to the generous contributions of donors, members and community partners.

In 2015, the Tampa Y...

» Raised $9,705,828 in public support including individual, business, government, foundation contributions and grants, demonstrating broad support of efforts and work from the Tampa Bay community.

When you put it all down in writing, the positive impact we make on a yearly basis is remarkable. Together, we’re making a huge difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and a huge impact on each individual we serve.

As you see in this annual report, we’ve stayed true to our Vision 2020 established priority areas in 2015: closing the academic achievement gap, chronic disease prevention and management, teen development and drowning prevention.

The Veggie Van – A Mobile Market Place is one of our most innovative initiatives in 2015. Since July, the Veggie Van has been taking fruits and veggies directly to kids and families in targeted high-need neighborhoods across Hillsborough and East Pasco counties. On page 6 in this annual report, you can watch a video for an up-close look at the Veggie Van’s real impact. Our thanks to the Veggie Van’s founding partners – Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, Joy McCann Foundation and Bank of America – for helping us change the face of childhood hunger in the Tampa Bay area.

The Tampa Y also cut a lot of ribbon during grand openings in 2015. In September, we unveiled the new Carol Kennedy Aquatic Center at the South Tampa Family YMCA. With the new addition, we’re able to impact more children and families with our life-saving swim lessons, water therapy programs and a family-fun water park.

We also cut the ribbon to Phase I of The Family Y at Big Bend Road in October. Currently, hundreds of kids are learning sports, teamwork and other life skillsonfiveathleticfieldsandinsidetheairnasium. Other outdoor amenities include a picnic pavilion, fitnesstrailandplayground.Wecannotwaitto expand our impact in the South Shore community with phase two of the new Y in Gibsonton – be on the lookout for a spring 2017 groundbreaking.

To add more value to a Y membership in 2015, the Tampa Y expanded our focus on family-friendly programming to provide families more opportunities to spend fun, quality time together and engage in activities with other neighborhood families in safe, positive environments. We also piloted many new innovative health and wellness programs in 2015, including Pedaling for Parkinson’s, outdoor boot camps, high-intensity interval training, heart rate training technology and Y-Weight – an immersive 12-week program offered free of charge to our Everywhere members.

Needless to say, 2015 has been a busy but meaningful year for the Tampa Y. My thanks to the Governance Board, branch boards, volunteers, donors and staff for their dedication and continuous support to serve the changing needs of our community as we continue to build a better us!

See you at the Y!
