Hymn-Singing at Nursing Homes and Care Facilities- Depending on how many people sign up, we will have one or more groups go out to various care facilities in manageable groups to sing some of our favorite hymns, bringing joy to the residents of the facilities. Voices of all ages are welcomed and encouraged to lift up a joyful noise.

Card-Making with Allison and Crew- Throughout the year the church sends out a number of cards to members and non-members in celebration, encour-agement, and mourning with the recipients. This is a ministry that reminds us all how we are connected with one another. Help us by making some cards that can be sent to our brothers and sisters. This project will take place in the Fellowship Hall and is a great opportunity for all those who find themselves to be a bit crafty.

Serving at the Marion-Polk Food Share- We will be serving inside at the Marion-Polk Food Share by helping repack bulk foods, packing food boxes, sort-ing and organizing food donation bins. This is a project that volunteers of all ages, from young children to grandparents, can participate in to serve this organization.

Serving at the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) - "Super Yard Overhaul" (weeding, replanting plants, and harvesting our garden). Help us to beautify the surroundings of the home used on a daily basis to provide shelter and resources to its clients. If you have not yet volunteered or experienced what IHN does, this would be a wonderful chance for you to learn about this organization. This is a great project for entire families to come together to serve other families in our community.

Serving with the CARA Ministry– Four households from our church are in need of some help around their homes. The projects include raking leaves, removal of a shrub, outdoor cleanup, vacuuming, light housekeeping, and hauling away debris. Some of these projects do need to have some supplies provided, such as lawn-care tools, lawnmower, and a pickup truck to haul away the debris. Please sign up for a specific household either online or at the Information Center.

Bites of Bread from Bob Over the next few months, I want to use the column to talk about quotes that some have assumed are in the Bible but is not their actual origin. Some of these sayings may agree with principles in the Bible, but others are actually contrary to the message of the scripture.

It may have been a mother trying to encourage her children to keep their room clean who first said, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” Sorry, moms, that is not found in the Bible. The creation story has God creating the first human from dirt. Jesus even spit in the dirt to form some mud and put it on the blind man’s eyes to heal him (John 9).

If it didn’t come from the Bible, where did it come from? Some have thought it possibly came from Benjamin Franklin or Poor Richard’s Almanac. Some think the saying comes from the writings of Phineas ben Yair who wrote in the Talmud: “The doctrines of religion are resolved into carefulness; carefulness into vigorousness; vigorousness into ab-stemiousness; abstemiousness into cleanliness; cleanliness into godliness.” In the quote “cleanliness” is literally next to “godliness.” Almost 200 years later John Wesley wrote the proverb, “Slovenliness is no part of religion. ‘Cleanliness is indeed next to Godliness.’ ”

Certainly the Hebrew people had a great deal of em-phasis on cleanliness. Concepts of what is “clean” and “unclean” became a major portion of the Mosaic Law. Jesus made it clear that cleanliness on the in-side was far more important than cleanliness on the outside. Perhaps if we were as concerned about what we allow ourselves to hear, read, think or see as we are about germs, we might develop a “5-Second Rule” about what we allow into our minds. If we discover a thought that has entered our mind is not

true, noble, right, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy, we have 5 seconds to get rid of that thought (Phil. 4:6).

While “Godliness is next to cleanliness” may not be in the Bible, some recent research should make our mothers feel better. BYU’s School of Management found a dramatic improvement in ethical behavior with just a few spritzes of citrus-scented Windex. They came to title the study “The Smell of Virtue.”

So...while it may not be in the Bible and while God is most concerned about cleanliness on the inside, a little cleanliness in our environment may not hurt us either.

April 14– Deputy General Minister Dr. Todd Adams Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will be preach-ing. He will be in Oregon to share at our Regional Gathering on April 13. His sermon title is “Tune My Heart to Sing Thy Grace,” Acts 9:1-6, 13-17b.

Check It Out! April is Holy Humor Month. It is a time to recognize the healing power of Christian joy, humor and cele-bration. The Sunday after Easter has been designated Holy Humor Sunday to encourage Christians to con-tinue to celebrate the joy of the resurrection with joy-ful singing, laughter and fun fellowship.

April Fool’s Day is a day to be a “fool for Christ,” as Paul called himself. In honor of the month, humor-ous books have been set out in the library, in the Children’s library and on the bookshelf in the youth lounge. Do check them out!

Welcome to Lois Pierce Lois transferred her membership to Salem First Christian Church on March 30.

She first came here through friends she knew as a volunteer at the Salem-Keizer Senior Center. She volunteers as a receptionist and at the gift shop.

Lois is a retired LPN who worked at Salem Hospital and OHSU. Her children were born at the Salem Hospital. One of her sons lives in Kentucky, her daughter lives in California and her other son is deceased. She finds SFCC to be part of her family. Welcome to our family, Lois!

Youth and The RegionYouth and The RegionYouth and The RegionYouth and The Region Flurries from Chris This past Sunday we had around 40 volunteers give up part of their Easter morning to come to the Union Gospel Mission to prepare, serve, and clean up the Easter breakfast we provided for the guests and cli-ents of UGM. We ended up serving about 230 people a breakfast of scrambled eggs, sausage, and pancakes. All of the food we served was made possi-ble by all of the monetary donations many of you made to support this annual breakfast. We raised, at last count, $675 to purchase the necessary ingredi-ents. All of the monies left over from our expenses we donated to the Union Gospel Mission to support their mission to serve the homeless, hungry, and those looking to get back on their feet. Thank you all for your time and treasures.

I would like to thank another person, Robin Schar, for purchasing and hemming a set of new curtains for the youth lounge. For the past several years we have had badly faded curtains that no longer blocked the sun when needed. Thank you very much for this gift to our youth!

If you have not already done so, I would encourage you to sign up for a service project for our upcoming Service Sunday on April 7. We are called to live out our faith in Christ through our actions. On this com-ing Sunday we will be going out into the community and serving the hungry, the homeless, the lonely, the hurting, and those in need as we show our community what it means to be a Disciple of Christ. Please sign up as soon as possible so that we know how many people to plan for and what supplies, if any, to provide.

Over the next several months the youth will be put-ting on a number of fundraisers to raise money for our mission trip to the Yakima Just Living Farm and to cover the cost of camp. When we have dates set for the fundraisers, we ask that you consider continuing your support of our youth.

Why Reinvent the Wheel Sunday, April 14 9:30 am-4:30 pm Northwood Christian Church in Springfield

New ideas don’t necessarily grow on trees, but ideas often come from conversations sparking new thoughts and building new relationships.

Oregon Disciples will convene for a series of conver-sations to explore ministry ideas and resources for congregations. Groups will explore topics including: using social media, ministry with homeless neighbors, mission projects in Mexico, spiritual formation groups, new models for congregational governance, increasing stewardship, attracting new people to congregations and global mission partner-ships.

The event is free to all, and lunch will be provided for a free-will offering. For more information visit the Christian Church in Oregon website at: www.christianchruchinoregon.org

Celebration of Life for Victor Vaca At 4:00 pm Sunday, April 14, we will host for the region a service in honor of our long-time friend and mission partner, Victor Vaca, who recently passed away. Victor and his wife Violet founded the FEDICE ministry in Ecuador.

Victor visited Oregon Disciples churches several times. He and Violet graciously received several work groups from Oregon to help with FEDICE projects in Ecuador over the years.

All are invited to the service.

Spiritually Speaking - Alzheimer’s Support Group CONGREGATION FAMILY and FRIENDS, please join us on the fourth Wednesday of the month for our Spiritually Speaking Alzheimer’s Dementia Support Group. All of us have been touched by this disease, (or will be) within our families, among friends, or within our larger Church family. Come for informa-tion and understanding; come for physical, emotional and spiritual support. Come with questions and concerns; leave with answers and tools for caregiving and supporting our loved-ones affected by Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.

CWF Rosa Page Welch Group Asking Support for Service Project Leslie Mudge, daughter-in-law to Gary & Sharon Mudge, is a US Army Nurse in Afghanistan. She works in a program that sends nurses to villages to teach basic health care, prenatal care, and midwifery.

The Rosa Page Welch group is collecting baby hats and children’s hats through May, 2013. The hats can be gently used.
