Max Meek Hike Saturday, September 6 8:00 am Leave from the church

This year we are hiking the nearly 6 miles (fairly flat) around Clear Lake and viewing the beautiful Sahalie Falls in the upper McKenzie River area. We will leave at 8:00 am in the church bus and return around 5:00 pm. Please bring a lunch, water, sunscreen, sun-glasses, good hiking shoes, and get ready to enjoy great fellowship in God’s beautiful outdoors!

The 11TH Commandment Don’t blame Moses. There he was, chisel, heavy stone, top of the mountain, in the heat, wearing san-dals. So he missed one. The 11th Commandant: “THOU SHALT NOT NOT GIVE.”

An edict surely as fitting as any of the first ten, and the theme of this year’s financial stewardship drive, meant to coincide with the Fall Bible Study. Any ex-amination of the teachings of the Bible lets us know with certainty that we are required to give back if we are to find joy in our faith.

Want a healthy, viable church? One with sustainable ministry and mission? Consider your giving. Stew-ardship is a part of commitment. Your church is counting on you.

Bites of Bread from Bob One of the great traditions of Salem First Christian Church is Fall Bible Study. Fall Bible Study is a time when all of our Sunday School classes and Worship focus on a portion of Scripture. Often it is a book of the Bible or a portion of a book. This year the focus is on the Ten Commandments.

The Ten Commandments suffer from a couple of problems. First, they seem so familiar that we fail to really know them. (You might give yourself the test right now to see how many you can name and if you can put them in the right order). Second, they suffer from bad press. If people are asked about the Ten Commandments one of the first things that comes to mind is “thou shalt not.” We look at them as some-thing God has given to keep us from enjoying life. In reality, they are a gift of a loving God to a people to whom he had just given from slavery and He wanted to show them the best way to live into that free-dom. We look at the “thou shalt nots” as stop signs that get in our way rather than a way to make the traffic of our life go smoother. Ever come to a busy intersection when the light is out of order?

Jesus is the one who has set us free and offers us the way to make the best of our freedom. He said the two greatest commandments are to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength and to love our neighbor as our self. The first four commandments focus upon our love of God. The last six focus on how we love our neighbor.

In my study for this series I have learned a great deal that I am anxious to share. Carol Talley has done an incredible job of developing Sunday School materials for the youth and adults and Betty Charnholm has done the same for our children.

God Bless, Pastor Bob

Children and Youth Ramblings from Riane We concluded the summer as a youth group at the Newsboys concert this past week! God’s presence prevailed and the positive energy flowing through the hearts of hundreds of people gathered to worship the Lord was powerful beyond comprehension.

Please keep students in your prayers this week as they return to school. Pray for their confidence and self-assurance as some begin at a new school. Pray for their determination to persevere in their school work. Pray those involved in many extracurricular activities can find a balance and not be too overwhelmed. Pray that they find joy and excitement in learning. Pray that they continue to discover who they are and the purpose God has for them. Pray for their safety. Upcoming events: Saturday, September 20 – Fall BBQ Kick-Off *There are still spots available for youth and parents to meet and greet those who come by the youth booth and provide them with information regarding youth activities at Salem FCC.

Sunday, October 5 – Youth group returns after Sun-day School from 12:00-1:30 pm! If you are looking for a way to get involved with the youth, providing lunch after Sunday School hour before youth group is a great way to get to know the youth members of our church! There is a sign-up sheet on the youth bulletin board for those interested in this serving opportunity. Look forward to the next Scroll article written by one of our youth!

Blessings, Riane

Thursday Night Bible Study Beginning Thursday, September 11 6:45-8:30 pm, Library

Precept Bible Study on the Book of Nehemiah by Kay Arthur. This is a DVD and Workbook Study. Cost of workbook is $11.25.

Description of Study: It is easy to analyze, scrutinize and talk about the problems, but what we really need is people who will not just discuss a situation but who will do something about it! Nehemiah saw a problem and was distressed. Instead of complaining, he took action.

Come to Thursday Night Bible Study to learn how to be a person of action like Nehemiah. If you have any questions, please call Betty Charnholm at 503-910-8219 or Allison Pfaff 503-390-0241.

Christmas Treasures Sale? It seems early to start talking about the Christmas Treasures Sale, but for our crafters, knitters cro-cheters, bakers and seamstresses, it may be late. The ladies who donate preserves probably already have them in their cupboards.

Your donations last year generated $900+ for the CWF treasury and was put to good use. Thank you and the purchasers for your generosity. Let's try for $1000+ this year.
