• Four models available to replace equivalent Series 2400 units

You can save money and improve the efficiencyof your System 360/370 computer by using Series924 Magnetic Tape units from Texas Instruments. They are complete tape units, plug-for-plug re-placements for original equipment, not just tapehandlers. These new units can improve the cost-and operating-efficiency of your current system,or enlarge it profitably, with equal benefits. Nosystem modification is necessary, with four mod-els to replace equivalent Series 2400 units.

These magnetic tape units handle your tapebetter, require less maintenance and repair andcost less than original equipment units. They have

the same controls as the original equipment, withoutstanding improvements in mechanical andelectronic design.

Gentle handling of valuable tapes maintains dataintegrity and increases the usable life of thetape. Single capstan drive starts and stops tapesmoothly to eliminate tape stretching and break-age. There is no tape cinch at the reels becauseof the 924's control of tape tension and strictlylimited reel acceleration.

Nothing contacts the recording surface of thetape except the read-write head. Glass-lined vac-

uum columns and ceramic spring-loaded headguides eliminate tape damage caused by friction. The permanently-aligned tape path prevents edgewear and is a major factor in minimizing skewthroughout the life of the unit.

Read-write heads on all models of the Series924are fixed-position components, rigidly mountedto a precision-machined casting. With spring-loaded guides, the tape is always aligned prop-erly. There are no alignment adjustments required.

Logic and control circuits use the latest micro-circuitry and semiconductor power devices. Lifeof the electronics is long, and maintenance re-quirements are minimized. A modular approachto circuit packaging facilitates ease of mainte-nance and repair.

You get more uptime on your System 360/370computer with Series 924 units. There are nobelts, pulleys and gears in the Tl tape drive mech-anism: a direct drive to the single capstan reducesmechanics to a minimum. Elimination of failure-

prone mechanical components and the use ofmodern electronic circuitry reduces maintenancerequirements, thereby reducing system downtime. In routine maintenance, access to the unit is sim-ple, with quickly removable side and rear panels. In addition, the design makes regular maintenancesimpler, with such convenience features as hingedvacuum-column doors that open for cleaning with-out removing screws or other hardware.

Because use of the Series 924 Magnetic Tapeunits is essentially identical to original equipment

units for the operator, there is no transition prob-lem. Convenience features, including power win-dow and quick-release tape hubs, are standard.

Loading and unloading the units is faster thanwith original equipment. After threading past thehead, the Tl unit loads the vacuum columns andadvances the tape forward to BOT rapidly andautomatically. In removing the tape, the unit auto-matically rewinds the entire tape to the file reel, eliminating manual rewind procedures.
