    MENSAHE NG WHO

Sinabi ni Dr. Susan Mercado, director for Building Healthy Com-munities and Populations ngWHO-Western Pacific office, na

walang katibayang ligtas angpaggamit ng mga electroniccigarette o makatutulong itongmatigil ang bisyo ng paninigarilyo.

In 2010, the WHO organized aglobal panel of experts to reviewthe evidence and there is no evi-dence to show that it can help youquit smoking, ani Mercado saisang press conference kasunod ngRed Orchid Awards ceremonies saPhilippine International Conven-

Health ang Red Orchid Awards samga tanggapan ng pamahalaan, pampublikong pagamutan at mgalokal na yunit ng pamahalaan napatuloy sa pagsulong sa kapaligirang100-percent tobacco-free.

We are calling on countries toregulate and to use other regulatorymeans whether [in the form of] taxa-tion, product registration... whatevermeans that a government can do toregulate it because we do not know ifit is safe. We do not know that it canhelp you quit smoking, ani Mercado.

Secret of Gomas stayingpower in show biz

Goma is one of the few ac-tors who really has such a strik-ing presence even when he wasstill a newbie. After all these

years, the Adonis of local showbiz could still knock us off ourfeet. Taller, darker and handsorthan ever

What do you think is the se-cret of your staying power in

the biz?I really cant say for sure. But

even very early on I realizedthat longevity is very importantin show business. An actor willnot get to enjoy that if he wereto rely on looks and luck alone.Real talent is what makes youstay and survive so I alwaysgive it my all. That is the train-ing I got from my lola. She al-

ways taught me to give my 100percent in all that I do. I am al-

so blessed to have been giventhe chance to work with thebest talents in the indus-trycoactors, directors, produc-ers, crew. I love my work and

when you love something itloves you back.

Tell us about your comingmovie with Dawn Zulueta andJohn Lloyd Cruz?

It is a love story. [It tells]how the harsh realities of lifecan bring back the love they(the couple) had found but lostsomewhere along the way.

What makes your loveteam with Dawn still click af-ter all these years?

Maybe the fact that we wereonce upon a time a real-lifecouple and the fact that wehave remained friends. A bigpart in resurrecting our loveteam was the success ofWalang

    Hanggan.How does your wife Lucy

    manage to remain unaffected

by your love team and on-

screen chemistry with Dawnconsidering that Dawn and

you used to be a c ouple?Lucyunderstands my work

as an actor. And she has openlysaid that she is a Richard-Dawnfan.

    Whats the secret of aginggracefully?

    Positive thinking, the Avon

Anew face cream that Lucy haspositioned on my bedside table, the Belo sunblock that Lucy in-sists I apply before I engage inmy outdoor sports, proper dietand lots of physical activity.

    How has Lucy tamedyou?

In so many ways! We com-plement each other in more

ways than one. We talk aboutwhats good for us, how we canimprove ourselves in things we

do. We dream together, welaugh together. She also tellsme whats good for me.

    Whats your guilty plea-sure?

ebay, amazon.com, auctions!Youve always been an ad-

venturer. Is there anythingyoure afraid to do?

Just dont bring me close tocockroaches. I hate them!

Are there days when youfeel ugly? How do you deal

with that?Hmmm not much. I smile

and bahala na where that smilewill take me.

Is there anything that an-noys you that you want to getrid of?

My allergy from dust andpollen makes my nose itchy. When cold air hits my chest itmakes me cough.

Whats the hardest part ofbeing Richard Gomez?

    My being stubborn at times

[and] my low tolerance for inef-

ficiency, although that has beentempered significantly throughthe years.

Whats the best thing aboutbeing Richard Gomez?

My positivity and I alwaysstay on the fun side of life.

What was the worst in-trigue about you and how did

you handle it?So many na, I cant even re-member which one hurt me themost. But Ive always been oneto count my blessings so in thatsense no intrigue will succeedin having absolute power overme.

What would you want tochange in the show biz sys-tem?

It is fun the way it is. Its sur-vival when youre down. Itsparty time when you are up.

    What was the turning point

of your careerand your per-sonal life?

    I would sayPalibhasa Lalake

was a turningpoint. It af-firmed that we(the shows leadactors) hadmade it. We

were just havingfun on TV, andmaybe thattranslated so

well to the view-ers that theyended up having

    just as much fun

watching as wedid. It was a re-ality show ofsorts, kahit di pauso yung realityshow becausethere weremany times

when we veeredaway from thescript. TheBench rowingad was also a

turning point. Itwas a verymemorable cam-paign.

My personal life? That wouldhave to be when I married Lucy.I knew then that my life wouldnever be the same again. My

sense of responsibility and pur-pose just became deeper in-stantly. Life became bigger, more beautiful.

    What was a life-changing

moment for you?Julianas birth. I was withLucy in the delivery room and Isaw this tiny person come outinto the world. I was never intokids before but at that very mo-ment my capacity to love justgrew exponentially.

What was your most em-barrassing moment?

A lot. Although I am not veryeasily embarrassed, honestlyHahaha! I know how to letthings roll off my back.

Youve come a long hardway to get to where you arenow. What are the most sig-nificant lessons you learned in

    your journey?The clichMake hay while

the sun is gay is very true.Save. Have a body of work that

you can be proud of. Take noth-ing for granted, count yourblessings. Be good to people.Enjoy life.

How would you like to be

remembered?I would like to be remem-

bered as a good friendsome-body who cares for others andsomeone who loves and knowshow to have fun.

    By Dolly Anne Carvajal

IVE known Richard Gomez ever sincehis early years in the biz. His manager,Tito Dougs (Douglas Quijano) and my

mom were the best of friends. Celebswould come in and out of our place to pay

    my mom a visit.
