On Tuesday 3 March that process began when the medical procedures started to ena- ble him to donate a kidney to his sister Christolene. Speaking to the siblings at their Uitsig home it’s easy to understand why he had no qualms about his decision after his sister was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2013. “My sister is special to me, this is really no sacrifice for me if it means that she gets the chance to lead a full and fruitful life,” he said. Before Christolene was diagnosed, the family was puzzled at her frequent bouts of fainting and she went to the day hospital and was treated for problems related to her blood pressure. It was her collapsing on stage during a Gospel concert that prompted them to seek further help. She was taken to a private doctor who im- mediately realised that the problem was much bigger than they thought. This led to a biopsy being conducted and the problem with her kidneys was diag- nosed. “It was very hard for us when we got the results,” says Christolene. “We knew from the start that I needed a transplant but I never stopped having faith in God with this path that he was taking me on.” Family members were tested for compati- bility and her brother was found to be a match, but he had to be 21 to be able to con- sent to the procedure legally. “We’ve always had a strong bond so its not strange that he should be compatible,” she smiles. “We share a love for so many things. Our faith, love of family and music has just brought us so close over the years.” She added that the doctors were also confi- dent of their compatibility because they had always looked after their health. “While I have a problem with my kidneys, we have led clean lives by not smoking, drinking alcohol or taking drugs,” she con- tinued. “We also believe that God has his hand on us because he has bigger plans for us.” With the transplant pending last week, Curtis was excited about the procedure, say- ing that he was ready for it when they found that he was a match. “I would have done it the next day,” he says. “Unfortunately I had to wait to turn 21 but there was no hesitation from me when they found I was a match. “We share so much already why would I not share a kidney with her?” The siblings say that they have also be- come aware of the importance of the need for organ donors. “We need to make people aware of organ donation,” says Curtis. “As a donor there are so many ways that you can help someone and more people need to be made aware and get onto the list. “Even in death people can make that dif- ference so they must start thinking in that direction. If they have given consent as a do- nor and are in an accident their life will not be wasted if their organs can go to help some- one.” The two are also very thankful for all the support they have been getting from family and friends. “We are also thankful of the support that we are getting in the community,” says dad Christopher. “People in the neighbourhood are all pray- ing for them and we also want to thank their employers. “Curtis works for Coricraft and they gave him time off to be out of the dusty conditions. They’ve also assured him of his job after the procedure and helped us financially during this time. “Christolene was an administrator at RCS and they have also supported her constantly during this time. We want to thank all these people for keeping our children in their heart during this time.” Christolene and Curtis, sitting, with parents Lena and Christopher, believe their faith will ensure the success of the kidney transplant. A local singer is hoping to inspire oth-ers with her story when she takes tothe stage at the Joseph Stone Audito-

rium on Saturday (7 March).Athlone’s Natalie Johannes will present

her show Dear younger me with Nur Felix,Melissa Johanissen and MC Tracey Lange, together with dramatic pieces by Project021.“I’ve wanted to tell my story for a long

time, but I didn’t have the courage,”Nataliesays.Last year, Natalie and the band 5 Levels

Up raised R78 000 for Baphumelele, an or-phanage in Khayelitsha, with a show at StGeorge’s Cathedral. When her manager asked her about put-

ting on a show this year she decided, “Itneeds tohavepurpose, visionanda theme.”The purpose this time around is “to show

people that no matter how you grow up,there’s always a choice to make somethingof your life, despite your circumstances, you still have a purpose in life”.The first half ofDear youngermewill con-

sist of skits by Project 021, a communityyouth theatre group.“There are a few things that happen in

the skits that happened tome as a child andhave affected me as an adult,” Natalie ex-plains, pointing out that these issues, likebullying and low self esteem, are problemsmany people have experienced at somepoint in their lives. The evening will also include poetry that

speaks to the skits, and singing and danc-ing of course. Nataliewon’t just be focusingon the negative. A big part of the showwithbe about “strength”.She wants to teach people that every per-

son has greatness inside themselves. The usually shy Natalie had to dig deep

to find her own greatness before getting upon stage alone. She’s still not entirely usedto the attention, but she’s growing in confi-dence with every performance.Natalie started singing at church and

school before joining the PMP Choir underthe baton of Keith Rose. She says the choirand Keith gave her a strong vocal founda-tion and it was there that the 29-year-oldlearnt to “step out” into the limelight. From there she joined the cast of Family

Secrets where she met director David Cor-nelson, who runs Project 021. “I love hispassion for drama and tapping into whatyou’re good at.”Besides the on-stage entertainment, the

audience can also look forward to a rafflewith prizes worth R14 000 up for grabs. Some of these include a stay at the MountNelson Hotel, a gift voucher for Kitima inHout Bay, a VIP day in the presidentialsuite at Newlands Cricket Grounds, spatreatments, a magnum of Cap Classiqueand a dinner for two at Buitenverwachting.V Tickets for Dear younger me at Joseph Stone Auditorium at 20:00 on 7 March cost between R80and R120 and are available at www.webtickets.co.za.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon hasbeen awarded the coveted Silver Labelstatus by the International Association

of Athletics Federations (IAAF).It is the first marathon on the continent

to be awarded this classification.According to Wikipedia, Silver Label sta-

tus means that at least five nations are to berepresented by runners with times fasterthan the IAAF’s guidelines. Additionally, the race course must be closed to vehiculartraffic and measured to the Association ofInternational Marathons and Distance Ra-ces (AIMS) standard, with full electronic ti-ming used to generate the results. The racemust be organised in a way that minimisesecological damage to the surrounding areas.A specified number of doping tests must becarried out, and prize money for the partici-pants should be equal, irrespective of genderor nationality, though additional rewardscan be given to runners from the host nation.

This year the marathon will be held overthe weekend of 19 and 20 September. Entriesopened on 1 March and organisers expect 20000 entries. The marathon has R1.6 millionin total prize money.

“The bar has certainly been raised quitehigh and as we launch this year’s event, the

organisers have set yet another challenge –the IAAF’s Gold Label status for the SanlamCape Town Marathon. We are confident thatthis will also be achieved in no time,” said

Carl Roothman, Chief Executive in SanlamInvestments retail division when he spokeat a media briefing.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is one

of the first sporting events in South Africato be declared carbon neutral.

This is a significant milestone which hasalready been reached towards the achieve-ment of the Gold Label status.

Additionally, Africa’s largest vitaminsand nutritional supplements brand, VitalHealth Foods, has been appointed develop-mental partner for the Sanlam Cape TownMarathon to help assist with the develop-ment of the sport in South Africa.

Technical partner Asics, along with San-lam, will sponsor a trip for two people to takepart in the 2016 Paris Marathon, as a prizedreward for a lucky entrant wanting to expe-rience what the essence of a world-class GoldLabel status marathon is.

“The Silver Label status puts the SanlamCape Town Marathon on the race calendarfor the top tier international runners in 2015.We are excited to be planning a spectator ori-entated event over the Heritage Day wee-kend,” said Elana Meyer, Marathon brandambassador.

Last year’s event in September drew over12 500 athletes, 5 000 more runners than par-ticipated in the previous year. It was won byKenyan Willy Kibor Koitile in a time of2:10:45.

Michael Laros (64) was Fair-mont se wedstrydwenner.

In die afgelope naweek se Peter Buttner-li-gawedstryde vir o.19A-spanne het HS Bell-ville (149) net-net deurgeskuur teen Stellen-

berg (144), terwyl HS Tygerberg (162/3) testerk was vir Chesterhouse (161). De Kuilenen The Settlers (93 lopies elk) het gelykop ge-speel.
