Direction for questions No. 26 - 45Choose the best answer, A, B, C, 0, or Eto each question. Then, on your answer sheet, find the numberof the question and fill in the letter that corresponds to the answer you have chosen.Text 11 The seasons occur because the axis on which Earth turns is tilted with respect to the

plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun. Earth's tilt causes the North Pole to be tiltedtoward the Sun for half of the year, and the South Pole to be tilted toward the Sunforthe other half of the year. The hemisphere that is tilted toward the Sun has a longer

5 d(3Y,receives more of the Sun's rays, ~nd receives the Sun's rays more directly than thehemisphere tilted away from the Sun. When it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, this hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun; this corresponds to winter in the SouthernHemisphere, when the Southern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun. If Earth's axiswas not tilted, each night and day everywhere on Earth would always be 12 hours long

10 and seasons would not occur. The axis of the planet Mars is also tilted with respect tothe plane of Mars's orbit around the Sun, so Mars experiences seasons much like thoseof Earth.

Text 21 Solar energy can also be used for cooling. An absorption air conditioner or refrigerator

uses a large solar collector to provide the heat that drives the cooling process. The Sun'sheat brings the mixture to a boil. The refrigerant, often ammonia, vaporizes, rises as agas, and reaches the condenser. There it gives off heat and returnsto liquid form. As the

5 drops of pure refrigerant fall, they trickle into the evaporator or freezing unit wherethey evaporate vigorously. Evaporation requires heat energy, which comes from thesurroundings, and results in cooling: The refrigerant absorbs heat from the unit andcools the space. The refrigerant, now a gas again, rejoins the mixture in the boiler torestart the process.31. What is the main idea of the text?

Text 31 John Moses Browning {1855-1926} was an American inventor famous for his

innovations to the design of firearms. Born in Ogden, Utah, Browning spent most of hisyouth working in his fathers gunsmith shop. At the age of 13 he made his first gun, asingle-shot rifle, from scrap metal.

5 Browning invented some of the most widely used weapons in the history offirearms and developed several important improvements for guns. His patentsincluded designs for breech-loading, automatic-loading, and' repeating rifles andshotguns. Impressed with his design, the Winchester Repeating Arms Companyfunded production of the rifles. Browning went on to design many different firearms

10 for Winchester, including a lever-action repeating rifle, a lever-action repeatingshotgun, and a pump-action shotgun. He invented more successful firearms than anyother American, and since his death there have been few fundamental changes in themanufacture of firearms.
