Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU)

Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) under the auspices of UNESCO was established in 2000 as a UNESCO Category 2 Centre in Education by the Agreement between UNESCO and the Republic of Korea. APCEIU is mandated to promote Education for International Understanding (EIU) towards a Culture of Peace, now interchangeably referred as Global Citizenship Education (GCED) under the framework of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Education 2030. APCEIU works in promoting GCED through its programmes include capacity-building of educators and international teacher exchange, policy research and development, material and information dissemination, and partnerships and networking.

The Letters From Korea Series is the outcome of the Cross-cultural Education Material Development Project, a segment of the 2016-2017 Asia-Pacific Teacher Exchange for Global Education(APTE). The APTE is a bilateral teacher exchange programme between the Republic of Korea and seven other countries in Asia, sponsored by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and implemented by APCEIU in collaboration with the Ministries of Education of partner countries. The 2017 APTE participants form partner countries have shared their hands-on experiences and reflections of teaching at Korean through this collection of their own narratives and illustrations.

Journey to the Heart of PeaceThe Letters From Korea Series picture the everyday life of Korean schools from the perspectives of

foreign teachers. 20 teachers from Cambodia and the Philippines have written letters to their students in their home countries about their short-term teaching and living experiences in South Korea. Although the letters are directed to the teachers’ own students, the lively stories depicted in the ten letters are interesting to anyone interested in how globalization brings the world together. While the experiences of foreigners exploring a new culture reveal people’s common attitudes toward cultural differences, The particular setting of the stories – the classrooms – sends a special message about education, especially to students.

To many Koreans, the portraits of everyday school life in Korea may look familiar and ordinary – with nothing special to note, but the aspects noticed and highlighted by the Cambodian and Filipino teachers and the ways the stories are narrated may encourage even native Koreans to take another look at their own familiar daily practices through the eyes of strangers. Moreover, the stories told by foreign teachers are commonly based on activities in schools, passion for education, and love for students, which show how much we share in common, regardless of the cultural differences.

As we are well aware of, stories of personal experiences should be interpreted with caution and critical reflection, and the teachers’ two-three month-long experiences at Korean schools should not be over-generalized. Yet, their voices are full of fresh insights. Now, with an open mind, are you ready to read these letters?

평화를 향한 여정한국에서 온 편지 시리즈는 외국인 선생님들의 눈으로 바라본 한국 학교의 일상 생활을 그려내고 있습니다. 캄보디아와

필리핀에서 오신 스무 명의 선생님들은 짧은 기간 동안 한국 학교에서 교사로 생활하며 느낀 점들을 열 장의 편지로

엮어냈습니다. 편지는 캄보디아와 필리핀 선생님들이 한국에서의 학교생활에 대해 본국 제자들에게 이야기해주는 방식으로

쓰여있는데, 편지 곳곳에 담긴 생동감 넘치는 스토리는 오늘날 국경을 넘어서 우리가 어떻게 연결되어 살아가는지에 관심 있는

모든 이에게 깊은 울림을 선사할 것 입니다. 편지에는 한국에 온 외국인들이 흔히 느낄 법한 문화차이에 관한 소회가 군데군데

드러나있지만, ‘교실’을 배경으로 풀어나간 편지의 이야기들엔 학생들에게 전하고 싶은 선생님들의 교훈적인 메시지가 잘 담겨

있습니다.

한국에서의 학교생활은 그 나라에서 태어나고 자란 대부분의 한국인들에겐 특별할 것이 없겠지만, 캄보디아와 필리핀

선생님들의 눈엔 하나하나가 새롭고 신기하게 보일 수 있습니다. 한국인들에겐 색다를 것 없는 한국학교생활의 한 단면을

포착하여 외국인의 시선으로 재해석한 편지의 이야기들은, 한국인들로 하여금 스스로가 당연시 여겼던 자신들의 삶을 이전과

다른 눈으로 바라보게 합니다. 그러면서도 학교, 교육에의 열정, 학생에 대한 사랑이라는 공통분모를 매개로 한 선생님들의

이야기는 다름을 넘어서 우리가 공유하고 있는 것들이 얼마나 많은지를 보여주기도 합니다.

우리 모두가 주지하듯이, 2~3개월 간의 개인적인 한국학교 경험을 담은 이야기들이 한국 학교생활의 전부라 할 수는

없겠지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 선생님들의 따뜻한 목소리를 담은 이야기는 독자들에게 깊은 감명을 줄 것입니다. 이 모든 것을

염두에 두고 자, 이제 선생님들의 편지를 읽어볼까요?

Paglalakbay tungo sa Kapayapaan Ang Letters from Korea Series ay naglalarawan ng pang-araw-araw na pamumuhay sa mga

paaralang Koryano ayon sa pananaw ng mga guro mula sa iba’t ibang bansa. Ang mga liham ay naglalaman ng karanasan sa pagtuturo at pakikipamuhay sa loob ng maikling panahon sa South Korea ng dalawampung guro mula sa Cambodia at Pilipinas. Bagamat ang liham ay isinulat para sa mga mag-aaral, ang mga kuwentong nakapaloob sa sampung liham ay makakatulong sa sinumang naghahangad na maunawaan kung paano nakakatulong ang globalisasyon sa pagtataguyod ng pagkakaisa ng mga bansa sa daigdig. Habang ang mga karanasan ng mga dayuhang guro sa pagtuklas ng bagong kultura ay naglalahad ng karaniwang pag-uugali ng mga tao hinggil sa pagkakaiba ng mga kultura, ang lokasyon ng mga kuwento – ang silid-aralan – ay nagbibigay ng natatanging mensahe tungkol sa edukasyon, lalo na sa mga mag-aaral.

Maaaring para sa mga nakararaming Koryano, ang paglalarawan ng pang-araw-araw na pamumuhay sa mga paaralan sa Korea ay karaniwan at ordinaryo lamang – at walang anumang espesyal sa kanila, subalit ang mga aspetong napansin at bingyang-diin ng mga guro mula sa Cambodia at Pilipinas at ang paraan ng pagsalaysay ng mga kuwento nito ay maaaring makapukaw ng interes maging ng mga Koryano na tingnan ang kanilang pang-araw-araw na gawain ayon sa pananaw ng mga dayuhan. Bukod rito, ang mga kuwento ng mga guro mula sa ibang bansa ay batay sa mga gawaing pampaaralan, masidhing pagpapahalaga sa edukasyon, at pagmamahal para sa mga mag-aaral na nagpapakita ng ating pagkakatulad sa kabila ng pagkakaiba ng mga kultura.

Ang mga kuwento sa liham na ito ay pawang halaw sa mga personal na karanasan kaya nangangailangan ito ng maingat na pagbibigay kahulugan at masusing pagninilay, at ang dalawa hanggang tatlong buwang karanasan ng mga guro sa mga paaralang Koryano ay hindi dapat tingnan bilang pangkalahatan. Magkagayon man, ang kanilang mga boses ay puno mga bagong kaisipan. Ngayon, handa ka na bang basahin ang mga liham nang may bukas na isipan?

Kumusta ka? Kumusta ang iyong araw?Siguro naging mahirap para sa iyo ang pag-aaral nitong mga nakaraang buwan at ang pakikipagkaibigan ay naging malaki ring hamon. Minsan, nararamdaman nating dayuhan tayo sa isang dayuhang bansa, kahit na tayo ay nasa lugar na pamilyar na sa atin. Ganyan din ang nararamdaman ko kung minsan, lalo na nang magsimula akong magturo, kasama ng mga kaibigan ko, rito sa Korea. Sa unang sulyap, mukhang magkaiba ang Korea at ang Pilipinas, pero kung pagmamasdan mo nang maigi, matutuklasan mong wala naman talagang pinagkaiba ang dalawang bansa.Naaalala mo pa ba ang larawang ibinahagi ko sa iyo tungkol sa pangkat ng mag-aaral na Koreano na nagtulungan para sa kaayusan ng kapaligiran paaralan? H i n d i n a m a n t a l a g a s i l a n a g s i m u l a b i l a n g magkakaibigan. Gaya mo, naging mahirap din sa kanilang magbahagi at magtulungan sa iba. Ang pagtutuon ng pansin sa pagkakaiba ng bawat isa ay maaaring magdulot ng hindi pagkakaunawaan na hindi makatutulong sa pagbuo ng magandang ugnayan at pakikipagkapuwa. Upang mapagtagumpayan ang kani lang adhikain, ang mga mag-aaral na ito ay nakibahagi sa gawain ng pangangalaga sa kapaligiran ng kanilang paaralan, habang nakatuon ang kanilang pansin sa mga pagkakatulad kaysa pinagkaiba. Hindi lang sila matagumpay sa paglilinis ng paaralan; sila rin ay nagkaroon ng mga bagong kaibigan. Sa huli, hindi lang naman ang ating pagkakaiba-iba ang nagdudulot sa atin upang maging katangi-tangi; bagkus higit ang ating pagkakatulad na siyang lubos na nakapagbibigay sa atin ng halagang dapat itangi. Kamusta kayo dyan? Matagal na panahon na rin tayong hindi nagkikita. Nananabik na kaming makita kayo muli. Salamat sa Diyos at dahil sa teknolohiya, tayo ay nananatiling konektado sa isa’t isa.Tunay na nakakamangha ang paggamit ng makabagong teknolohiya dito sa Korea. Ito’y bahagi na ng kanilang pangaraw-araw na pamumuhay. Sa paaralan, lahat ng silid-aralan ay may nakakabit na kompyuter na konektado sa internet, telebisyon, projector, speaker at iba pang kagamitang pagkatuto at panturo . Ang mga guro ay gumagamit ng librong elektroniko. Ang lahat ng kanilang aralin ay nasa internet. Noong kami ay nagturo ng Ingles at nagbahagi ng ating kultura at mga literaturang Pilipino, gumamit din kami ng teknolohiya. Kami ay nagagalak na ipaalam sa inyo na ang mga mag-aaral na Koreano ay lubos na natuto at namanghaha dahil sa paggamit namin ng teknolohiya. Sila ay nasiyahan dahil naintindihan nila ang aming itinuro sa kanila.Hindi lang sa silid-aralan ginagamit ang teknolohiya kundi pati na rin sa mga iba’t ibang silid ng pagkatuto gaya ng silid-aklatan na kung saan ginugugol ng mga bata ang kanilang oras para basahin ang kanilang paboritong mga aklat. Naging makabuluhan at interesante kanilang pagbabasa dahil sa tulong ng teknolohiya at sa mga digital na babasahin. Sila ay natututo sa tulong ng teknolohiya at sa pagbabasa.Tulad nila, tayo rin ay gumagamit nang makabagong teknolohiya sa ating mga silid-aralan upang kayo’y lubusang matuto. Pero ang pagkakaiba nila sa atin ay sa kung paano ginagamit ito. Magiging kapakipakinabang lamang ito kung gagamitin natin sa mga makabuluhan na bagay pa ra t ayo ay lubusa ng mat uto pa ra sa kapakinabangan natin at ng ibang tao.Ipagpatuloy ang inyong pag-aaral at hayaan ninyong tulungan kayo as teknolohiya upang matupad ang inyong mga minimithi sa buhay!

Sa aming mga minamahal na mag-aaral,

쿠무스타 카? 어떻게 지내고 있나요? 아마도 여러분들은

지난 몇 달 동안 학교가 굉장히 힘들고, 새로운 친구를 만

드는 것도 큰 어려움이라고 느끼고 있겠죠? 우리도 익숙한

환경에 있음에도 불구하고, 가끔은 낯선 나라에 온 이방

인처럼 느껴질 때가 있어요. 또, 어떤 때에는 한국이 굉장

히 비슷하다고 느껴지기도 하는데, 특히 저와 다른 선생님

들이 한국에서 수업을 시작하면서부터 그런 것 같아요. 여

러분들도 한국과 필리핀은 굉장히 다를 것이라고 생각하

겠죠? 그런데 자세히 들여다 보면, 사실 크게 다르지 않다

고 모두 느낄 수 있을 거예요.

예전에 보여주었던 한국 학생들이 함께 분리 수거하는 사

진을 기억하나요? 그 학생들도 처음부터 친구는 아니었어

요. 여러분들처럼, 서로에게 자신의 모습을 보여 주고, 협

력하는 것을 배우는 과정이 쉽지는 않았답니다. 각자의

차이점에 주목하는 것은 다툼으로 이어지기 쉽고, 좋은

관계를 형성하는데 결코 도움이 되지 않아요. 한국 학생

들은 차이점에 집중하기 보다는, 함께 이루고자 하는 목

표, 바로 교내 환경을 가꾸는 것에 집중하기로 했답니다.

그리고 아주 성공적이었죠! 학교를 깨끗이 가꾸는 것뿐만

아니라, 새로운 좋은 친구들도 생겼으니까요. 마지막 날

에는 개성이 우리를 특별하게 만들기도 하지만, 친구들과

의 비슷한 점들을 간직하는 것이 더욱 소중하다는 것을

깨달았답니다.

여러분들이 이 점을 필리핀에서도 실천했으면 좋겠어요.

함께 노력하면 결국 살기 좋은 세상을 만들 수 있다는 것

을 여러분이 알게 될 거라고 믿어요.

이제 곧 여러분들을 만날 것을 생각하니 정말 기쁘답니다.

잘 지내고 있나요? 벌써 헤어진 지 몇 달이 지났군요.

여러분들 한 명 한 명 정말 보고 싶어요. 그래도 기술의

발전 덕분에 서로 계속 연락할 수 있어서 다행입니다!

기술에 관해서 말인데요, 한국의 발전된 기술에 정말 크게

놀랐답니다. 기술이 일상 생활의 한 부분이 되어있었어요.

그리고 학교는 모든 교실들이 인터넷이 연결된 컴퓨터,

평면 텔레비전, 그리고 프로젝터와 스피커까지 교육적인

장비들이 잘 갖추어져 있었어요. 선생님들은 수업에서

전자 책을 사 용하시니, 클릭 몇 번으로도 수업이

가능하답니다! 영어와 필리핀 문화, 그리고 문학을 가르칠

때 장비들을 사용해보았는데, 학생들 모두 수업을

즐기면서 우리가 가르치는 것들이 학생들에게 잘 전달될

수 있었어요.

기술은 교실뿐만 아니라, 책을 읽으며 시간을 보내는

도서관 같은 다른 교육 기관에서도 사용되고 있었지요.

디지털 자료들과 기술덕분에 독서는 더욱 재미있고, 의미

있는 일이 된 것 같아 보였어요. 알겠나요? 한국 학생들은

기술을 통해서 배우고, 또 독서에서도 재미를 느낀답니다.

마찬가지로, 우리도 교실에서 기술을 이용하지요?

그렇지만 기술을 어떻게 사용하느냐에 따라 차이가

생긴답니다. 우리가 기술을 통해 어떤 의미를 찾을 때,

비로소 우리는 기술을 이용했다고 말할 수 있는 배우는

것을 멈추지 말고, 기술이 여러분들의 꿈을 이루는데

도움이 될 수 있도록 해요!

Mapagpalang araw! Hindi namin mapigilan ang pagtulo ng luha mula sa aming mga mata habang inaalala ang mga panahong tayo ay magkasama. Napakasakit man na kayo ay lisanin upang turuan ang mga bata sa Korea, alam namin na ang lahat ng mga pangyayari sa buhay ay may dahilan.Kumusta na kayo? Kami ay nananabik sa inyo. Gusto naming ibahagi ang aming mga karanasan dito sa Korea. Ang mga batang Koreano ay tulad nyo ring matatalino at mapagmahal. Tuwing sila ay nakakakita o nakakasalubong ng mga tao lalo na’t kung mas matanda sa kanila, lagi silang yumuyuko at sinasabi ang mga salitang “anyeong hasseyo.” Palagian din silang maagap sa pagpasok sa paaralan. Para sa Kanila, ang oras ay napakahalaga.Ang mga batang Koreano ay disiplinado sa lahat ng bagay at naniniwala kami na ito ay mahalaga sa paguulad ng bansa. Kung wala nito, mahirap ang pagkamit ng mga nithiin sa buhay. Kung wala ang disiplina, hindi nito kayang abutin ang ano mang mithiin sa buhay. Nasaksihan namin kung paano ito p i n a p a h a l a g a h a n n g m g a b a t a n g K o r e a n o . Ang disiplina ay nag-uugat sa pamilya, yumayabong sa paaralan, at nagiging repleksyon ng imahe ng ating bansa.

I t o a y i s a n g napakagandang karanasan para sa amin bilang exchange teachers dito. Sadyang nakamamangha ang kagandahan ng mga bulaklak na ito.Maliban dito, nakabibilib din ang pagsisigasig ng mga mag-aaral dito pagdating sa kanilang edukasyon. Naalala tuloy namin ang pagsisigasig din ninyo diyan.Ngayon, itinuro naming ang awit na “Kung Ikaw ay Masaya” at kami ay namangha dahil napakabilis nilang matutunan ito. Pakiramdam namin ay nasa Pilipinas lamang kami dahil sa ganda ng kanilang pagkakaawit nito. Sadya ngang ang musika ay may kakayanang pag-ugnayin ang mga tao, saan mang lupalop ng mundo.Nagpakita rin ng pananabik ang mga kabataan dito sa paglalaro ng ating larong lahi na “Luksong Tinik”. Sadyang magkakatulad ang mga kabataan pagdating sa pagla la ro, lumalabas ito ng natura l at may katuwaan. Napakagandang pagmasdan ang kanilang kagalakan sa paglalaro. Alam niyo ba na ang aming mga karanasan sa pagtuturo dito ng mga awitin at laro ay nagpapakita ng ating pagkakatulad sa kabila ng ating pagkakaiba-iba. Ang mundo ay isang napakalaking palaruan na dapat nating saliksikin. Darating ang araw na makikilala niyo rin ang ating mga kapatid dito sa Korea at nawa’y masiyahan kayo.Napakarami pa ng magagandang karanasan ang nais ibahagi sa inyo sa aming pagbabal ik diyan sa Pilipinas. Ngunit sa ngayon, mag-aral muna kayong mabuti.Hanggang sa muli. Nagmamahal,

좋은 하루! 여러분과 함께 했던 시간들을 떠올리면 눈물

을 멈출 수가 없어요. 여러분들을 떠나서, 한국의 다른 학

생들을 가르친다는 것은 정말 슬픈 일이에요. 하지만 어떤

일이든 뜻이 있을 거라고 믿어요.

잘 지내고 있나요? 정말 보고 싶답니다. 한국에서 있었던

많은 경험들을 모두 들려주고 싶어요. 한국의 어린 학생들

도 여러분들처럼 똑똑하고, 표현을 잘 한답니다. 매번 자

신 보다 나이가 많은 사람을 만나면, “안녕하세요”라고 고

개를 숙이고 인사를 해요. 또 항상 학교에 굉장히 일찍 오

는데, 아마도 한국 학생들에게 시간은 아주 중요한 것 같

아요.

그들은 아주 잘 훈육된 학생들이고, 이것은 인생의 목표

를 달성하는 것뿐만 아니라, 나라의 발전에도 아주 필수적

인 것이라고 생각해요. 한국 학생들은 정해진 규칙을 지키

고, 선생님의 지도를 잘 따르기 위해 아주 노력하고 있었

답니다.

우리 필리핀에서도 이 정도로 잘 훈육되었으면 하고 바랐

어요. 그렇게 된다면, 아무도 지켜보지 않아도 사람들이

열심히 일할 수 있을 테니까요. 훈육은 가정에서 시작해

서, 학교에서 함양되지요. 그리고 우리 나라의 이미지를

만든답니다.

한국은 오늘 날씨가 아주 좋아요. 여기는 지금 봄이라서

벚꽃이 막 피어나고 있답니다. 국제교사교류 프로그램을

통해 이렇게 한국에서 아름다운 풍경을 보고 있다니, 정말

꿈이 이루어진 것만 같아요.

더욱 놀라운 것은 한국 학생들의 교육에 대한 열정이에요.

여기 학생들을 보고 있자면, 필리핀 학생들에게 있어서 교

육이 어떤 가치를 가지는지 다시금 생각하게 된답니다.

오늘은 학생들에게 “쿵 이커우 아이 마사야 (당신이 행복

하다면)”를 부르는 법을 가르쳐 주었는데, 학생들이 아주

빨리 배워서 인상 깊었답니다. 마치 필리핀 사람들이 부르

는 노래처럼 정확하게 노래를 불러서 꼭 고향에 와있는 기

분이었어요. 정말이지 음악은 필리핀 사람이든, 한국 사

람이든 상관없이 사람들을 연결시켜주는 힘이 있는 것 같

아요.

우리는 필리핀 전통 놀이도 알려주었는데, 모두 “룩송 티닉

”을 하면서 뛰고, 응원하면서 함께 웃었답니다. 이 게임은

학생들이 자연스럽게 관심을 가지게 만들었는데, 여러분들

이 배웠던 것과 똑같은 모습으로 한국 학생들도 게임과 기

술들을 배웠어요.

혹시 알고 있나요? 학생들에게 놀이와 노래를 가르쳐주는

경험들을 통해 깨달은 것은 우리가 서로 다르더라도, 아이

들의 눈에는 모두 같아 보인다는 것이에요. 세상은 여러분

들이 뛰어 놀 수 있는 아주 큰 놀이터랍니다. 언젠가 여러

분들도 여기 한국의 언니 오빠들과 만날 기회가 있을 거에

요.

아직도 학교로 돌아가서 여러분들과 나누고 싶은 한국에서

의 멋진 경험들이 아주 많이 남아있답니다. 그때까지 모두

공부 열심히 하고 있기를 바라요.

Mahal naming estudyante,Matagal na panahon mula ng tayo'y huling nagkita dahil kailangan naming pumunta sa Timog-Korea. Maayos naman kami dito sa Hoengseong dahil sa maiinit na pagtanggap ng mga tao. Ang mga estudyante naming dito ay tulad nyo din. Mababait, magagalang, at magigiliw. Madali para sa kanila ang magbahagi ng pagmamahal sa kapwa. Binabati kami ng “Magandang umaga po” kapag nakikita nila kami sa umaga kung saan kami ay natutuwang sumagot ng “Annyeonghaseyo”. Interesado sila at namamangha sa aming klase tungkol sa kultura lalo nang makita nila ang mga iba’t-ibang mga kasuotan ng mga Pilipino. Sila ay may mababang loob at kitang kita ang kawalan ng muwang sa mundo. Tulad ng bata, mas gusto nila ang naglalaro lagi at talagang interisado sila sa inyo dahil mahilig silang mag laro at mapanuri.Nawa’y Ibahagi natin ang pagmamahal at kabutihan sa lahat tulad ng ginagawa nila.

Dear Students, How are you? I hope that you are always happy like our students here in South Korea.There are many school activities here like, the most awaited SPORTS DAY. All the students can join like WOON TONG HWEI, the traditional event of Korea. There are many games on that day! I’d like to introduce one of them. Two giant balls are pushed by 5 members from each group until they reach a base. The game ends when all 180 students had their turn. This shows unity and cooperation to succeed, as no one has to be left behind. I hope we can try this game back at our school! Your teachers,Mimosa and Jeanette

사랑하는 학생들에게,

한국에 온 이후로 여러분들을 만나지 못한 지 꽤 오랜 시간이

지났네요. 친절한 분들 덕분에 우리는 횡성에서 아주 잘 지내고

있어요. 우리가 여기에서 만난 학생들은 여러분과 아주 닮았어요.

정말 착하고, 공손하고, 그리고 매력적이랍니다. 한국 학생들은 참

정이 많아요. 아침에 우리를 만나면 따갈로그 말로 “마간당

우마고 포(안녕하세요)” 라고 인사를 한답니다. 그러면 우리도

반갑게 한국 말로 “안녕하세요”라고 인사를 나누지요. 한국

학생들은 필리핀 문화에 아주 관심이 많고 신기해해요. 특히

필리핀 전통 의상을 보았을 때 참 흥미로워 했답니다. 한국

학생들은 어린 아이처럼 밝은 마음을 가진 순수한 학생들이고, 또

장난기와 호기심도 많아서 하루 종일 재미있게 노는 것을 아주

좋아한답니다.

우리 학생들도 한국 학생들처럼 모든 사람들에게 사랑과 친절을

베풀 수 있길 바라요.

한국 학교에는 다양한 활동들이 많아요. 그 중에서도 가장

인기가 많고, 학생들이 기다리는 것은 바로 운동회에요.

운동회는 한국의 전통적인 행사랍니다. 그 날은 정말 많은

게임들이 준비되어있는데, 여러분에게 하나를 소개해주려고

해요. 다섯 명씩 이루어진 각 팀들이 두 개의 커다란 공을

밀어내는 것인데, 180명의 학생들이 모두 끝날 때까지 게임은

계속 된답니다. 이 게임은 결속력과 협력이 얼마나 중요한지를

잘 보여줘요. 우리 학교에 돌아가서 여러분들과 꼭 이 게임을

해보고 싶답니다.

To Our Dear Students:How are you guys doing? I know that after being apart from each other for three months, everyone is excited not only to see me but also to hear about my Korea adventure. Let me start by sharing my one of the most unforgettable experiences here in South Korea. My principal and other co-teachers invited me to climb Mt. Seongsan Ilchulbong in the beautiful island of Jeju. At first, I was so excited because on top of this mountain, a majestic view of this island awaits for me.While climbing the 182 meter high mountain, I noticed how Koreans value their time. Their main goal is to not see the surroundings on the way but to reach the peak as quick and as fast as possible.Unlike the Koreans, we, Filipinos, tend to stop going every time we see perfect views because it’s so nice to take selfies with an amazing background, haha! I consider this as one of my most unforgettable experience because I get to witness the Korean “PALI PALI” culture which means you need to hurry up. It was the most tiring activity that I have ever done in my entire life because my principal always tells me “PALI PALI” meaning, you need to be fast to reach that peak. After this hiking activity, I realized that this Korean culture helped make signif icant changes to their economy. This is one of the many reasons why Korea is one of the richest and most progressive countries today.Let me enumerate other good characteristics of Korean people which make Korea an amazing country to live in: 1.) most of them are well-disciplined and obedient; 2.) they have the best transportation system; 3.) they preserve their culture and tradition despite being an economic powerhouse; and 4.) they are goal oriented.I believe that in the near future, we can be as progressive as South Korea. 사랑하는 학생들에게,

여러분 모두 잘 지내고 있나요? 우리가 못 만난 지 벌써 세

달이나 지났네요. 모두들 선생님을 다시 만나는 것을 기대

하는 것뿐만 아니라, 한국에서의 여행이 어땠는지 듣고 싶

어 할거라는 것을 잘 알고 있어요.

그럼, 여러분들에게 한국에서 가장 잊지 못할 경험에 대해

들려줄게요. 한국의 교장선생님과 다른 선생님들께서 아름

다운 제주도의 성산일출봉 등산에 함께 가자고 초대해 주

셨어요. 처음에는 정상에 오르면, 멋진 장관이 기다리고

있을 거라고 생각하니 너무 기대가 되었었답니다.

182미터의 높은 산을 오르는 동안, 한국 사람들은 시간을

굉장히 소중하게 생각한다는 것을 알게 되었어요. 그분들

의 목표는 오르면서 주변의 경치를 보는 것보다는 최대한

빨리 정상에 오르는 것이었어요.

필리핀 사람들이 멋진 경치가 보일 때마다 멈춰서는 것과

는 또 다른 모습이었답니다. 멋진 경치를 배경으로 사진을

찍는 것은 정말 좋았어요! 하하! 이것이 제가 여러분들에게

전해주고 싶은 가장 잊지 못할 경험이랍니다. 왜냐하면, 한

국 사람들의 “빨리 빨리” 문화를 직접 느낄 수 있었거든요.

또 선생님의 인생 중에 가장 피곤한 경험이기도 했는데, 교

장 선생님이 계속해서 “빨리 빨리” 라고 말씀하셨기 때문

이에요. 여기서 “빨리빨리”는 정상에 오르기 위해서는 서

둘러야 한다는 뜻이랍니다.

등산이 끝나고 나서, 저는 한국의 문화가 경제 발달에 중요

한 영향을 주었다는 것을 깨달았어요. 또한 이 문화는 한

국이 지금 가장 부유하고 선진화된 나라들 중에 하나가 된

한 가지 이유라고 생각해요. 한국을 살기 좋은 나라로 만

들 수 있었던 한국의 특징들을 나열해 볼게요. 첫 번째는

대부분의 한국 사람들은 잘 교육 받았고 성실해요. 두 번

째는 한국은 대중 교통 시설이 잘 갖추어져 있어요. 세 번

째로는 경제 대국이 되었음에도 불구하고 여전히 자신들의

문화와 전통을 잘 이어나가고 있다는 것이에요. 마지막으

로 한국 사람들은 목표 지향적이랍니다.

얼마 지나지 않아, 우리나라도 곧 한국처럼 발전할 수 있을

거라고 믿어요. 교육과 시간을 좀 더 소중하게 생각한다면

충분히 가능하답니다. 그러니까, 우리도 빨리 빨리!

We have been in Korea for more than two months for the APTE program. Hope you are all fine. While here, there are many interesting things, but the most attractive one is “Home Museum” designed for primary schools. This program can be held under the request from the school principal, just once a year. On that day, 6 staffs from the National Museum visit the school with a lot of materials and stay at school for a whole day to teach children. All of students had a chance to gain knowledge about history, to feel the historical instruments, to observe the King’s stamps, to try on the king and queen’s costumes and to sit on the king’s chair. They were so lucky on that day, especially girls because they could dress up as both the king and queen. Can you imagine this situation? Of course, they could feel like the king and queen from the ancient times. Not only that, all of the students could make some projects related to these history topics such as the boxes of the king’s stamp, the queen’s hair clip and so on. See you soon!

Dear All Beloved Students!우리는 국제교사교류프로그램으로 한국에 두 달 이상

머무르고 있어요. 여러분 모두 잘 지내고 있길 바라요.

여기 있으면서 흥미로운 점들이 정말 많은데, 그 중에서도

가장 매력적인 것은 초등학생들을 위한 “우리 학교에

박물관”이라는 프로그램이에요. 이 프로그램은 일년에 한

번, 교장 선생님의 요청으로 열리기 시작한 것이랍니다.

이날은 국립 박물관에서 여섯 명의 전문가들이 다양한

수업 자료들과 함께 학교를 방문하고, 하루 종일 학생들과

함께 학교에서 머물면서 역사를 가르쳐 준답니다. 학생들

모두 역사에 대한 지식을 배우고, 역사적 물건을 실제로

만져보기도 하는데, 왕의 도장(옥새)을 관찰하거나 왕과

왕비의 옷을 입어보고, 또 왕의 의자에 앉아 볼 기회도

있었어요. 정말 운이 좋은 날이지요. 특히 여자 아이들은

왕과 왕비의 옷들을 모두 입어볼 수 있어서 아주

좋아했답니다. 그 학생들의 소감이 어땠을지 여러분은

상상이 되나요? 물론 역사 속의 왕과 왕비의 기분을 느껴볼

수 있다는 것은 중요해요. 하지만 그뿐만 아니라, 모든

학생들이 역사적 주제와 관련해서 프로젝트를 진행할 수

있었다는 점이 의미가 있었어요. 학생들은 옥새를 담는

함이나 왕비의 비녀를 만드는 활동도 했답니다!

How are you doing in Cambodia! My mission in the Republic of South Korea is almost three months for the Teacher Exchange Program which gives us the opportunity to see this beautiful developed country. I am impressed by many things such as the developed infrastructure, people, weather, high buildings, and so on. There are a lot of things in common between Korea and Cambodia, for instance, importance of family relationship, parents’ gratefulness, value of seniority, public holidays, eating rice and other kinds of food, respect, and etc. However, there are some differences we have as well. The value of education, the development of infrastructure, economics, standard of l iving, f reedom, knowledge, law and pract ice , responsibility and accountability, are some examples.What I would like to highlight for you all to take into consideration is the significance of education which is extremely valued in Korean Society. Students in Korea are well disciplined. Korean school normally starts class from 9:00 AM, but all students have to be at school by 8:30 to prepare for some tasks and get ready for their classes. They are rarely absent or come late for their class even if they have a ceremony at home, such as a relative’s wedding, family trip, etc. The exception is if they are sick or they have an important task to deal with, then they will ask for permission to be absent or late. They make strong efforts in their academic subjects, obey and respect teachers, and have team solidarity. They are also aware of their duty and obligations as students which is to work very hard to grasp the knowledge when they are young. They have to stay in public school until 4:30 PM and private academy until 10 pm at night. Their effort makes their country develop dramatically. Do you know that Korea had such a bad situation because of war over 50 years ago like Cambodia after Pol Pot regime? But you can see now Korea is a modernized country because of their education investment. Do you want to live in such a great society like Korea? Start changing from now on to effectively value education by strengthening your effort and duty and spending your valuable time in academia and research. Last but not least, I hope that our country will be like Korea soon because all of you who are very active, creative, and participative in enhancing the quality of education from now on for our next generation.With a lot of love,Your teacher

Change Before you have to change!Dear All Cambodian Students!

모두들 캄보디아에서 잘 지내고 있나요? 국제교사교류사업은 저

에게 한국이라는 멋지고 발전된 나라를 세 달 동안 경험할 수

있는 기회를 주었답니다. 저는 정말 많은 것에 감명받았는데, 잘

구축된 인프라와 사람들, 날씨, 그리고 고층 건물들까지 전부

인상 깊었어요. 캄보디아와 한국은 공통점이 참 많아요. 예를

들면, 가족 관계를 중요하게 생각하고 부모님께 감사해하는 것,

어른들을 공경하는 것, 국경일이 있는 것, 그리고 쌀과 같은 비

슷한 음식을 먹는 점 등등 공통점이 많답니다. 반대로 다른 점

도 있지요. 교육의 중요성이나 인프라 구축, 경제와 생활의 수

준, 자유, 지식, 법과 집행, 책임감과 의무를 중요하게 생각하는

것들이 그 차이점이라고 할 수 있어요.

제가 여기서 강조하고자 하는 점은 한국이 아주 중요하게 생각

하는 교육의 가치를 여러분들도 알아야 한다는 것입니다. 한국

학생들 아주 잘 훈육되어 있었어요. 한국 학교는 대부분 수업을

9시에 시작하지만, 학생들은 모두 8시 30분에 학교에 도착해서

수업 준비를 해요. 그리고 거의 결석이나 지각을 하지 않는답니

다. 친척의 결혼식이나 가족 여행과 같은 가족 행사가 있더라도

말이에요. 예외인 경우는 학생이 아프거나 정말 중요한 일이 있

을 때인데, 이런 경우에는 학교에 지각이나 결석에 대한 허락을

받아야 해요. 한국 학생들은 공부를 굉장히 열심히 하고, 선생

님들의 말씀을 잘 따르며 존경심을 가지고 있어요. 그리고 같은

반 친구들끼리 결속력도 좋아요. 한국 학생들은 학생으로서의

자신의 의무와 소명을 잘 알고 있어서 어릴 때부터 지식을 쌓기

위해 노력해왔답니다. 학교는 4시 30분에 끝나고, 학원은 밤 10

시에 끝난다고 해요. 이런 학생들의 노력은 한국이 빠른 속도로

발전하는 것에 큰 영향을 주었답니다. 혹시 알고 있나요? 한국

도 전쟁으로 인해 50년 전까지만 해도 캄보디아의 폴 폿 정권

이후처럼 좋지 않은 상황이었답니다. 하지만 여러분들도 알다시

피 한국은 교육에 대한 투자 덕분에 현재는 아주 발전한 나라가

되었죠. 여러분들도 한국처럼 좋은 환경에서 살고 싶은가요? 그

렇다면, 지금부터 당장 변화해야 해요. 여러분들의 열정과 소중

한 시간들을 학문적 탐구에 쏟아야 한답니다.

마지막으로, 우리나라가 곧 한국처럼 발전하기를 바라요. 왜냐

하면, 여러분들은 지금부터 다음세대를 위한 교육의 질을 높이

는 것에 아주 적극적이면서 창의적이고, 또 잘 참여하고 있기 때

문이에요.

Hi everybody! How are you? And how are your studies? I hope you are all fine. I’m doing well in Korea and enjoying the journey of the global teachers exchange program. Dear students have you ever wondered about the ICT in Korea? And how does it work in Korean schools? Of course it is relatively everywhere in Koreas schools. Or we can say the class room of the 21st century. It is the secret of success for a variety of jobs like being a researcher, movie star, or a famous singer and the reason why most Korean students can become successful. I think Korea has a certain dream and can make it come true. All students had lunch at school. They took their trays and emptied it at the space provided for rubbish and food waste before returning the tray. I was really impressed with this action. Everyone loves the environment that’s why it is always green and clean everywhere. We can say Korea is home of the flowers and the land of smiles. I have many fantastic experiences here. Dear students I hope that one day you can come to visit this beautiful country. Do you want our country be clean? It starts with you, so please start from now on. I’ll share more with you when I go back to Cambodia. See you soon.

어떤가요? 모두들 잘 지내고 있기를 바라요. 선생님은 한

국에서 국제교사교류사업을 즐기며 잘 지내고 있답니다.

우리 학생들은 한국의 정보통신기술에 대해서 생각해 본

적 있나요? 이 기술이 한국 학교에서 어떤 역할을 하는지

도 말이에요. 한국 학교에서는 상대적으로 많이 이용되고

있는 기술들인데, 쉽게 말하자면 21세기형 교실이라고 부

를 수 있겠어요. 이런 기술들은 다양한 직업, 예를 들자면

연구원, 영화 배우 또는 유명한 가수가 되는 것, 그리고

대부분의 한국 학생들이 어떻게 성공적으로 꿈을 이룰 수

있는지에 대한 비밀의 열쇠를 가지고 있는 것 같아요. 그

리고 한국 학생들은 구체적인 꿈을 가지고 있어서, 그 꿈

을 이룰 수 있는 것 같아 보였어요.

이곳의 학생들은 전부 학교에서 점심을 먹는답니다. 식판

에 점심을 받고, 남은 음식이 있으면 잔반을 버리는 곳에

깨끗이 버린 후에 식판을 반납해요. 이것은 아주 인상 깊

은 모습이었어요. 어디를 둘러봐도 자연이 푸르르고 깨끗

한 것은 모두가 환경을 생각하고 사랑하기 때문이겠죠.

한국을 꽃과 미소의 나라라고 부를 수 있을 것 같네요.

저는 여기서 정말 멋진 경험들을 했답니다.

사랑하는 우리 학생들도 언젠가 이 아름다운 나라를 보러

오기를 바라요. 우리나라도 깨끗하기를 바라나요? 그렇다

The book-making project under the title of Letters From Korea Series is an integral part of the 2017 Korea-Cambodia and Korea-Philippines Teacher Exchange Programme, a three-month residential programme for exchanging teachers.

As part of the EIU(Education for International Understanding) segment of the programme, the project is designed to provide participating teachers with opportunities to share their stories about life at Korean schools, while letting the teachers also have hands-on experiences on the educational material development.

Through the two-day workshop at APCEIU, the participants shared and reflected on their observations and experiences of school life in Korea. After their rich discussions, the stories were written in order to introduce Korean culture and school life to their Cambodian/Filipino students. The participants then created illustrations for their stories and also learned how to craft the illustrated book at the workshop. With careful editing, additional illustrations and a creative touch of layout design, the books are now published, with the anticipation to be read widely by those interested in Korean school life, and cross-cultural experiences of teachers. The books can also be used as resources for bilingual education.

About the Project “Letters From Korea Series”

APTE(Asia-Pacific Teacher Exchange for Global Education) is a bilateral teacher exchange programme between the Republic of Korea and seven partner countries in Asia to promote mutual understanding and exchange of teaching experiences. Sponsored by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and implemented by APCEIU, in corporation with the Education Ministries of Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, the programme dispatches and invites teachers to and from partner countries and provides participating teachers with opportunities to teach at host schools of the partner country for 3-4 months. The programme is also expected to contribute to enhancing the quality of teachers through international cooperation and to promote GCED(Global Citizenship Education) as advocated in Education 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).
