Move into Original Innocence!

John calls people to repentance. Jesus walks into that conversation and confuses John. Because he was calling all sinners to come and change their lives. Jesus’ action of walking in was more us than himself. Baptism changes direction from that day onwards to inclusion of all into the fold of God. Even God fits into human categories and Jesus made a loud statement by entering human boundaries. Today when we reflect on the Baptism of Jesus, He is inviting us to enter human conditions that we are not familiar with and be part of all that is excitingly not accustomed to us. Baptism for Jesus was more about Original Innocence rather than Original Sin. It is about us being part of God’s family rather than part of human family and into that unity God invites us today. Acknowledge your Original Innocence first before you get wrapped up in Original Sin.

In 2017 we will see several potlucks. We are a church that likes to eat with one another. Potlucks are a beautiful tradition in churches and there is a reason for it. Potluck meals bring our tastes and traditions into

our larger community. The food we cook in our homes has a history and emotions and feelings attached to them. Sharing food from our kitchen is a beautiful way of saying to one another that my household and I embrace you into the sacredness of our meals. Please participate in potlucks. Please share your home cooked meal with your church members.

Celebration Sunday service of 2017 is January 29th at 10:30.

WET PAINT! - Please Excuse Our Mess - Painting starting 1/5/17 on select areas of the All Saints’ Facility

In October 2016, the vestry approved funding designated under the Capital Campaign to enable commencement of work in early 2017

giving certain areas of All Saints’ a fresh “makeover.” Since some areas were originally constructed as far back as 1991, some facility walls and floors are showing their age from continuous daily use. These updates, beginning this week, will include selected painting of walls and replacement of worn carpeting. Work will begin with painting in the History Hall, Parlor, West Bathrooms and one of the Adult Sunday School Classrooms – Watch this Space for Updates. A separate committee recently selected colors and styles, and the paint contractor is now available to allow the upgrade to begin January 5th. To allow daily work and ministries to continue with minimal interference and inconveniences, these updates will be phased in and areas affected will be rotated. So, please forgive our mess as we clean-up, fix-up and paint-up over the next few month

Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Isaiah 42:1-9

Lector: A Reading from the Book of Isaiah.

Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.

He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.

He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching.

Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.

I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.

the Lord is upon the mighty waters.

The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; *

the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor.

the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon;

He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, *

The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire;

the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; *

the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe *

and strips the forests bare.

And in the temple of the Lord *

The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; *

the Lord sits enthroned as King for evermore.

The Lord shall give strength to his people; *

the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace.

Acts 10:34-43

Lector: A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

The Sermon Please be seated

Nicene Creed BCP pg. 358 Celebrant and People

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. AMEN.

Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sings this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

BCP pg. 362

Holy and gracious Father: in your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread’ and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you, Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him.

(+) Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ, By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Peace Prayer Celebrant and People

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. AMEN.
