    SPECIAL FEATURE:WAR IN GAZA

    January 3rd, 2009

Berlin, GermanyLets break the wallswherever we are!Two groups of young Israeli and Palestinian youngstershave been recently awarded the Carl Von Ossie kyMedal in Berlin. The International League for HumanRights gives this yearly award in order to highlight thework a person or a group has done to draw a ention toa social subject or issue related to violations of humanrights. This year, the award was given to two groups ofMiddle East youngsters who have been gathering everyFriday for over 4 years, to march protesting against thewall built in the Gaza Strip, in the town of Bilain.

A group of young women of the town of Bilain hasfound a way to survive and take care of their children, creating a cooperative where they work with Palestiniantraditional crafts.

Five years ago, when the wall began to be built anddivided the town in two, these women and their grownup children, began a protest. Since then, Bilain has turned

into an emblematic place against the wall building awall that is 600 km long and divides 183 towns.

Along this concrete and barbed wired border, youngstersfrom the Palestinian Peoples Council as well as youngpeople from Israel who started coming regularly fromdi erent parts of the country, gather every Friday. They get organized and bring banners with slogans, sing anthems, tie themselves with chains to logs andmany other creative and collective ways of protest anddemonstration. They even organized an internationalcongress in Bilain, last year.

Each Friday, they face the Israeli army, against whomthey take a communicative and non-violent a itude, inspite of being a acked over and over again with rubber bullets.

A young Israeli girl describes the confusion of thesesoldiers: When the Israeli soldiers wanted to take us prisoner, they didnt have any justi cation, they didnt have the imagined enemy, the usual stigma, because wewerent terrorists or communists or religious fanatics or violent people. Being so confused, they needed to de neus as a group and look down on us. So they called usanarchists. We adopted this name as our identity andsince then weve called ourselves The Wall Anarchists.

When they went up on stage to get their awards, theseyoungsters said that usually, no one writes about non-violence because it clashes against the tabloid press, since there are no dead bodies or weapons.

Then, thanking for the award, they said we need theinternational community so we can be heard, so this non-violent resistance in uences public opinion.

Protest voices against violencein Gaza travel around the world

On Saturday 3rd, exactly when Ehud Barak gave theorder to begin the bloody o ensive a ack againstGaza, around 10,000 Arab and Jewish citizens weredemonstrating in Tel Aviv, while 150,000 people did the

same through Israel. As a human being, as an Israeli,as a defender of peace, I feel proud of being here today ,said the speech that *Uri Avnery* could not give to thedemonstrators, because of the siege and the threats of thefundamentalists. Thats how a wave of demonstrationsand press releases began. A wave that would repeatitself during the weeks of January, throughout theworld. Protests in front of the USA and Israel embassiescontinued one after the other, demanding that someoneput an end to the massacre. There were spontaneousdemonstrations, while others were organized inEurope and America. The activists, wearing Palestinianheadscarves, raised the half moon ags of the country, while taking o their shoes and throwing them, whichhas become a symbol of resistance since the Iraqi journalist threw one at Bush. The next two weekends

there were simultaneous large protests again all over theworld, but specially in the cities and capitals of the Arabicworld. One of the biggest was in Alexandria, with 50,000people condemning the complicity of Arab governmentswith the blockade.

Pictures: Demonstrations in Tel Aviv, London, Barcelona and Madrid

Display of statementssupporting the cease- reWorld Without Wars supports the Israeli and Palestinianyoungsters in their protest through a statement. Thefounder of the organization and coordinator of theWorld March for Peace and Non-violence, Rafael de

la Rubia , explained: The missile a acks of the armed group Hamas on Israel are no justi cation for the armedo ensive of the Israeli army in Gaza just as the economicsanctions against Palestine do not justify the suicidea acks, the missile a acks of Hamas or any a ack byany other Palestinian armed group.

All humanist spokesmen declared their rejection of theevents in Gaza, highlighting the paci st work of theorganized groups from both peoples. We condemn theviolence of Israel and we condemn the violence usedby the Palestinian armed groups. Only a non-violent consciousness will be able to stop the violence and if

such consciousness today is small, well have to make it grow , said Toms Hirschs open le er. He is a formerpresidential candidate and current Latin-Americanspokesperson for humanism.

The World March is a proposal open to the expressionof all people, all religions, all cultures, that favorsreconciliation towards the future. We join together for a non-violent future thats already emerging from thedepths of the human being , explained Javiera Oate ,spokesperson for World Without Wars, Chile.

Open le er from FedericoMayor Zaragoza asking

for active participationin the World MarchDear Friends:

I wish to inform you of my decision to join andto actively participate inthe World March for Peaceand Nonviolence, which isan initiative of the WorldWithout Wars Association. This is the way FedericoMayor Zaragoza, presidentof the UNESCO for 12years and founder of theassociation Culture ofPeace, opens his le eraddressed to his friends ofother organizations. Thisdefender of social justice, who plans to recreate the UNO, did not hesitate to beone of the rst personalities to give his decided andenthusiastic support to the World March.

Several reasons have prompted me to join thisinitiative: - I am sure that this is the right moment in history to promote a vast popular mobilization in

favour of a worldwide radical change ( nancial, social, environmental, nutritional and ethical) to achievethe transition from a culture of imposition, violence andwar to a culture of dialogue, conciliation and peace, from force to the word; from a war economy to an economy of global development, including the eradication of povertyand alienation.

A march with these characteristics would contribute torapidly creating a consciousness of peace in and among peoples, who must cease to be passive spectators andbecome the tireless protagonists of solidarity. It is timeto awaken the Rosa Parks that we all have deep downinside.

    - I believe that the time has come to participate in anaction that will unite all men and women who havededicated their lives to building a culture of peace, whatever their role may have been, and to enable themto span the globe, raising their voices and proclaiming justice, freedom and the equal dignity of all humanbeings, so that they may be heard by all, and particularlyby world leaders, parliamentarians, those in powerwho being aware of what is at risk, may likewisebe prompted to participate in the transformation that weadvocate.

From the onset and in each place, it is essential to beable to count on the participation of singers, orchestras, performers, athletes, actors who due to their popularity have the power to mobilize people.

    - Today, modern communications technology enables us for the rst time to use distance participation techniques(SMS, Internet). Lets put them to use. Let us forever

remember the words of Burke: Nobody makes a greater mistake than those who do nothing because they thinkthey could only do a li le! No one can harvest the fruits of seeds that they didnt have the courage to plant.Let us invent the future and prompt a rapid evolution.Between evolution and revolution there is only the r of responsibility.

    - Paraphrasing Federico Garca Lorca, this march willundoubtedly prompt a spiritual explosion that willcontribute to achieving the possible world we all dream.

These are some of my reasons. I ask for your collaboration.Video Federico Mayor Zaragoza talks about the WM in CNN:h p://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4565361076970034418
