is usually placed at the beginning of asentence.2. consists of two words +means for which and is followed bya phrase or full sentence explainingfor what here is a connecting word, equivalent of which, that, what in English.

I prepare myself forwhats coming after this stage.

    The government started a new

project in order to provide job opportunitiesfor young people. ( is used all thetime in media Arabic, meaning in orderto, its purpose is to , during which)3. is the combination of two words:

and is only used within a conditional sentence

as a pair. The basic construction goes likethis: / , and is added only if the second half of the conditional sentenceis negative.

If there was no rain, theplant would not have survived.

If there was rain, theplant would not have dried up.

Or we can say the samesentence without : If there was no rain, theplant would have dried up.I have never seen used without ,so if youve seen otherwise please let meknow. If you understood the rest of the sentence, you would know which meaning toapply. But in situations where you dontunderstand the rest of the sentence andyou are forced to guess blindly (e.g. in anexam), then go by these rules: The most common meanings of areno longer and didnt consider or wasntconsidered. Try the two and see which onets better. is easy to tell. Just look at whatscoming after it. If its a verb, meanstherefore, already, if its a noun, meanlost, missed When is used at the beginning of asentence it usually means when, andwhen its used in the middle of a sentenceit means for that, in order to, with thepurpose of , and when its used in aconditional sentence with . it means didnt / wouldnt have

learning Arabic. I visited Yemen the rsttime as a tourist and fell in love with theold city of Sanaa. I came back a couple of years later for an extended stay, and realizedpretty quickly that if I really wanted tounderstand the people and their culture, Ihad to speak Arabic.Words and sentences can youBenet of themTake for example a highly ambiguousimperfect form such as , whichcould be read in a number of different waysdepending on the context. Or readings of as /fa-qad/ vs /faqada/, readings of as /lam/ vs /lamm/ vs /lim/ etc. Here is my attempt to answer them based onwhat I know.

This phrase can be derived from several verbs:1. from the verb , the

is dropped in the case because of , meaning he can/is no longer and it isfollowed by a verb or an indenite noun.

He was so angry thathe could no longer control himself.

    He no longer studiesArabic.

He is no longer married.2. from the verb meaning he didnt count, consider It isoften used in its passive form:

He didnt consider her afriend. (active)

He was not considered animportant person. (passive)

He didnt count the money. He didnt count

his men before entering the war. ( he didntassess his manpower properly.)3. from the verb the

is dropped in the case because of ,meaning he didnt redo something, andit is almost always followed by a or anoun

He didnt repeat his speech. He didnt rebuild his house.

The print housedidnt reprint the book.4. from the verb

and is almost always followed byproposition ,meaning he didnt promise

He didnt promise to go outwith us.

    5. from the verb ,meaning he didnt prepare

    He didnt prepare the lesson./

This one is easy. is a verb or masdarmeans to lose or miss something and it isALWAYS followed by a noun. meanstherefore , thus, already, and is ALWAYSfollowed by a verb. Can you guess which is

which in the following examples:If you (plural) do not

help him, Allah already helped him. (Its avery famous verse from the Quran. Here =

+ , and him is Muhammad, the Prophet)

    / / 1. = means when, while, and

the closest to MSA with very little foreigninuence. True or not, it certainly is oneof the hardest to understand. Bedu, real oractors, tend to talk really fast and stringwords together. This video is a short cliptaken from the beginning of Finjan Addam(a Cup of Blood.) I transcribed the dialogue

and translated it into MSA and Englishin order to give you a avor of a verydifferent dialect. If you already know MSAor another dialect, listen once before youread the transcript and see how much youcan understand. If you are a beginner or arethinking about learning Arabic, I certainlydont recommend that you start withBedouin dialect. Bedu are such endangeredspecies these days, you wont be able to nd

anyone to practice with.Recently I was asked the followingquestions from Louis on how-to-learn-a-language.com. Before I answer them, Iwould like to point out that while I speak Arabic at a near-native level, I do not havea degree in Arabic, nor have I studied

linguistics. Any advice you read here issolely based on my personal experience andobserving hundreds of Arabic students overthe past four years.Hello there, I have read the entries onyour website and your posts here withenthusiasm. I too am an Arabic learner andthe information you contribute is invaluableto me. I do have a somewhat personalquestion or two, though. Hopefully you

dont mind !a) How do I improve my Arabic readingspeed? Although I am only two weeks intostudying, I am in an Arabic class for 6 hoursevery day. I have built up a vocabulary of about 50 words and can obviously readand write the alphabet too. My problem is

not recognizing words quick enough. Is itreally as simple as read more or exposeyourself to more Arabic? Ive begun tolabel household items with Arabic notecards, much to my familys dismay. Getthat chicken scratch off my drawer, I canrecall my mother saying.Actually I did something similar, just notlabeling household items. I bought a dryerase board, and wrote new words on iteveryday and erased known ones. If I keptforgetting a word, Id write it in really big

red letters. Some students used easel padpaper and posted them all over the wall.Besides the standard advice of read more,Id like to add three points :As a beginner, you should concentratemore on listening than reading. Its moreimportant to be able to recognize a wordhearing it than reading it.Try to read each word as a picture, not letterby letter. When you read word book inEnglish, you recognize it in one glance, youdont actually read book. Same goes

with Arabic, try to memorize words in theirentirety and only read letter by letter whenyou run into new words. If you have spare time left after your 6-hourclass and homework, you may want to tryQuran recitation (tajweed) which is quitehelpful to improve your pronunciationand letter-recognition. You dont need tounderstand the Quran to benet from it.Open this site http://www.mosshaf.com/ web/ and just follow along. The recitationis very slow and clear, and the text is

highlighted in sync with the audio so youdont lose your place.b) How did you get to YEMEN, of allplaces? Well, not physically how why didyou choose to go to Yemen? Most foreign students in Yemen came inorder to study Arabic, they couldve gone toSyria or Egypt and it wouldnt have madeany difference. Different dialects, I learned in yemen

Bedouin, Bedu, dialect, language learning, learn, study Arabic, transcript, tribes | Leavea responseMy rst exposure to Bedouin dialect waswhen I stayed with a Bedouin family inthe Empty Quarter near the Yemeni-Saudi-Omani border.A Bedu Family living at the edge of theEmpty QuarterAt the time I had lived in Sanaa for aboutten months, but my MSA was still shakyand I had no exposure to other dialects

besides Sanaani and its variants spokenin the northern and western highlands of Yemen. Needless to say I didnt understandmuch the rst couple of days, but assoon as I gured out that they pronounce

jeem as ya, things got better. Throughlong sitting sessions over bitter coffee, Ilearned some words and expressions, butwas far from being able to understand anyconversation not spoken directly at me. The

family members were illiterate and had no

exposure to mass media, so my attemptto communicate with them using eitherMSA or Sanani dialect, the only dialect Iknew at the time, was hit-and-miss. In thesubsequent years I went back to the samearea two more times and noticed that I wasable to understand more and more until Icould have daily conversations without anyproblems.Ramadan is the time when every Arabic TVchannel debuts multiple TV series in everydialect available out there: Syrian, Egyptian,

Saudi, Kuwaiti, Emarati, Bedouin,Moroccan, Yemeni, and even ClassicalArabic. Most were produced with lowbudget stretched to ll the 30-episode timeslot, but a few were gems. During Ramadanlast year, I followed an excellent Kuwaitishow called Mother of the Daughters,a history show about early Muslims inClassical Arabic called Kept His Promise, and a Bedouin show called A Cup of

Blood. If you know me, you know I love

desert, camels, and nomads. A Bedouinshow has just the right elements to get mehooked. Unfortunately, I was not able tofollow the show during Ramadan because of frequent power cuts, and Ive been wantingto know the rest of the story. I was told thatunlike other Bedouin series, this one wasbased on actual events that took place in theAl Noofuth desert in Saudi Arabia at thebeginning of the nineteenth century. Theother day I stumbled upon a DVD set thathas all 30 episodes at a random music store.

I bought it right away; now Im watchingone or two episodes a day, and will nishthe whole series in a month or so.

The actors and actresses are Saudis,Jordanians, and Syrians. I dont think any of them, except the extras, are actual Bedu, butin the show they all spoke Bedouin dialect,a close relative of Hijaz and Gulf Arabic. There are claims that Bedouin dialect is

To better understand the current situation, lets go back to the 38 th

general assembly of the Arab Air Transport Association, (Sanaa,2005).Our discussions during that meeting included, among others: consolidating the Arabian Alliance plan to jointly buy countries, alliances and aviationbodies, in addition to expanding

Arabesk; the regional system for code share booking and ticketing to includeall Arab airlines.

Five years later, our 43 rd meeting in Cairo was all about the current

struggle between some Arab carriersand Western governments to limit these carriers from further expanding

American markets. The rules of the game are changing. The very same Western countrieswho used open skies policies to offer their carriers clear skies across Asia,

bouncing back. Theyre now calling for tough measures to restrict Arab

ago, were strongly criticizing Arabnational carrier protection policiesare now busy inventing legal and taxconstraints against Arab carriers, including the so-called tax on air

pollution caused by civil aviation. It is indeed sarcastic that these

    to lift these restrictions and constraintsthat they are imposing now. It is clear now that open skies and free tradebecome completely useless when theycontradict with national interests;

created the open skies concept in the basically targeted by these conceptsand legislations.

The future of National Carriers If you have been following mediadebates over the past decade about

Its been ten years since the turn of the new millennium; a decade that hasbeen the most thrilling for the public, the media and air travelers across theworld. This past decade has also been the most altering and moving in thehistory of commercial aviation. The debut of economy (low cost) aviationcombined with wide spread open skies legislations left its clear mark on thedawn of the new millennium. The situation was made more challenging with the rocketing fuel prices,in the second half of the decade, followed by the global credit crisis. Manyairlines were forced out of competition, while others opted for compulsorymergers to avoid bankruptcy. Still, one market went completely the other way; the Arabian Gulf aviation industry. During the 43rd general assembly

of the Arab Air Transport Association, (Cairo, Oct 2010) Abdul WahabTuffaha, the Secretary General, was all smiles while presenting his annual report on the case of the industry. His headline read: Its the fate of theaviation industry to always perform amid exciting times.
