New York City’s YMCA continues to build on the strong foundation laid over the course of more than a centuryand a half of service, a foundation with a simple mission—helping individuals grow stronger in spirit, mind and body.

It is this sense of permanence and trust that we take into the years ahead, as we make the promise to New York Citythat we are here for you.

We’re here for your kids. We’re here for your family. We’re here for our community. We’re here for good.

Page 4: YMCA OF GREATER NEW YORK 2007 ANNUAL REPORT

Towards reinforcing our commitment in New York City neighborhoods:

• We recommitted to the Bedford-Stuyvesant community, opening a 19,000-square-foot expansionwhich allows us to serve more residents than everbefore in the Branch’s 118-year history;

• We continued to make progress in bringing newYMCAs to the Rockaways, Coney Island andRidgewood, while building on a partnership with theCity in plans for a new YMCA in Flushing;

• We added a third and fourth New Americans WelcomeCenter in Harlem and Prospect Park, expanding on acommitment to bring needed language and trainingservices to recent immigrants;

• We completed more than $52 million in equipment, construction and renovation projects in our continuing efforts to keep our YMCAs relevant and contemporary.

And in building our YMCA as a destination for not-for-profit professionals, top civic-leaders and philanthropists:

• We generated more than $18.3 million in contributions,including $4 million through our Strong KidsCampaign, reflecting the value the community hasplaced on the organization;

• We continued to lead the not-for-profit sector in our initiatives to strengthen compliance, improvetransparency and achieve greater accountability to all of our stakeholders;

• We exceeded our operating finance goals, strengthenedour balance sheet and completed one of our best everfinancial performances;

• We concluded our Growing Great Boards campaignwith more than 200 dedicated community and civicleaders joining our Association and Branch Boards.

As we move beyond 2007, we remain mindful andappreciative of the good work of the generations ofthose who came before us and look to carry forwardthe legacy entrusted to us in the year ahead.

LEADERSHIP REPORT

2007 proved to be an exceptional year for the YMCAof Greater New York. The year was characterized byexciting new youth program ventures, significantimprovements to our buildings and high performancefrom our YMCA staff and volunteers. In each of our three overarching priorities, we celebrated significant accomplishments.

In our work to strengthen our services as New YorkCity’s leading youth organization:

• We served more than 13,400 children in 180 afterschool programs throughout the five boroughs;

• Our 27 ACA-accredited day camps kept over 12,000children active and engaged through the summermonths, and our sleepaway camps opened the doorsto 2,100 kids, providing scholarships to two of every three youngsters;

• We unveiled the YMCA Strong Kids Card, designedto give pride of membership and free access tostructured YMCA programs for thousands of New York City kids;

• Programs for kids and teens were at the heart of more than $46.3 million in free or subsidizedservices and scholarships to New Yorkers in need.

NURTURING TOMORROW’S LEADERS

At the heart of the YMCA’s mission is a focus on building strongand healthy kids, and we provide tens of thousands of youngpeople each year with what Americans regard as birthrightopportunities: swim instruction, summer camp, safe and constructive recreation, character and leadership development as the foundation for responsible citizenship.

Beginning its third year in the fall of 2007, Teens Take the City has given hundreds of 12- to 17-year-olds a hands-on alternative to inaction on issues facing their neighborhoods. Indeveloping proposals to effect change through peer-led workinggroups, lively debate and a vote by the Teen City Council, moreteens are taking responsibility for their communities, findingtheir voice and making things happen.

And while opportunity and access are often the only obstacles to putting kids on the path to growing strong and healthy, thenew, free Strong Kids Card initiative will bring the pride ofmembership to even more of our City’s kids, welcoming themthrough open doors to safe and structured activities designed to help kids develop healthy habits for the rest of their life. As the latest addition to an ongoing struggle to reverse thechildhood obesity epidemic, the Strong Kids Card is part of$46.3 million in free or discounted programs we offer annually.

“I THOUGHT I WAS CONFIDENT WHEN I GOT INTO THE Y,

BUT I REALIZED I HAD A LOT TO LEARN. NOW I FEEL AT

EASE WITH MYSELF AND HOW I SPEAK, AND I TRY TO

PASS IT ON. WE’VE GOT TO LOOK BACK TO THE NEXT

GENERATION AND HELP THEM OUT.”

4

Teens Take the City Queens BoroughPresident Bruno Estrada,17, finds hiscalling not just in hands-on communityservice through his Long Island CityYMCA, but in mentoring younger peers,as he himself was mentored.

Page 6: YMCA OF GREATER NEW YORK 2007 ANNUAL REPORT

“I’M GRATEFUL THE Y IS THERE TO OPEN THEIR DOORS

TO MY STUDENTS, THEN TO ME AS A MOM. I FEEL I’M

WILLING TO DO ANYTHING I CAN TO HELP, SO I

VOLUNTEERED MYSELF.”

When she saw the impact 2nd GradeSwim had on her students at PS 110,Minelly Correa and her own kids Roy,16, and Julio, 21/2, saw the GreenpointYMCA as so much more than just youth sports.

6

PARTNERING WITH PARENTS

While programs geared towards family strengthening runthroughout YMCAs’ weekly scheduling, some of our most important work with families happens when moms and dads are still at work. From 2,600 little ones in our early childhoodprograms to 13,400 school age kids in our afterschool, theYMCA is a partner of working parents in raising strong andhealthy children.

The YMCA provides so much more than just a safe place, cultivating the abilities that enable youth to make a successfultransition into adulthood. In social development, caring adultsteach by example our core values and how to embrace the differences in people that make our world so unique. Academicsupport is also a critical part of our programming, particularly in families of new Americans, where a language barrier makeshomework help at the kitchen table a struggle.

By introducing new physical activity and healthy eating elementsinto afterschool and day camp program curricula, our kids arelearning to take responsibility for helping their families learnhealthier habits. On the horizon is Healthy Family Home, a national YMCA initiative designed to infuse practical tools and activities to foster healthy living and connectedness intoongoing family programs.

Page 7: YMCA OF GREATER NEW YORK 2007 ANNUAL REPORT

COMMITTING TO NEIGHBORHOODS

The friendly, open and accepting environment found at theYMCA makes it a place where people of every age, race, ethnicityand income choose to be together. As a center of communitylife, the YMCA acts as a social catalyst that transforms residentsinto neighbors, strangers into friends and blocks of houses andapartments into a neighborhood of homes.

The renewal of the Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA may be the mostvibrant recent example of the impact of a YMCA in its neighbor-hood. In a community we’ve served since 1889, we doubled the size of our facility with a shimmering 19,000-square-footexpansion in January 2007. As a result, 2,800 new individualsand families have chosen the YMCA for membership, and theBranch is serving 10,000 more community residents, whileinstilling a reinvigorated community spirit and pride.

In the years ahead, similar stories will be written in communitieswhere we first opened our doors a century ago. In Brooklynneighborhoods like Flatbush, East New York and Greenpoint, in Flushing and Jamaica, Queens, and at the heart of Harlem,we’re poised to recommit ourselves as never before, with significant capital reinvestment that sends the message loud and clear: We’re here for this community. We’re here for good.

“WITH THIS NEW BUILDING, THERE’S A NEW SPIRIT IN

BED-STUY. I TELL MY FRIENDS, ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS

GET UP AND GO TO THE Y, AND IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE.”

After 42 years of living just blocks away,something drew Mae McPhail, 72,through the door of the Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA one September day,and to Y Personal Fitness, where a new community of friends was formed.
