INSPIRATION POINT

The Victor

By C.W. Longenecker

If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don’t

If you like to win but think you can’t, It’s almost a cinch you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost.

For out in the world we find Success begins with a fellow’s will

It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are. You’ve got to think high to rise.

You’ve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win the prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go

To the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later, the man who wins

Is the man who thinks he can.

May, 2010

April showers have arrived which means that Spring flowers are just around the corner. Soon we will be looking for all kinds of entertainment and new discoveries.

And speaking of entertainment; thank you to our donors and to all who have assisted with raffle ticket sales on the “Entertainment Basket”. We raised over $400.00 in three weeks. I would also like to congratulate our winner of the raffle draw, Cheryl Dodd of Suncor Energy! This was the first fund raising effort for our club, this year, but it won’t be the last. We need to build our reserves for future events. This one was quite profitable, so it will be encouraging to have a few more raffle ticket draws and other fund raising events. Lenore and members of the Ad Hoc Fund Raising Committee will be busy this year.

One other effort that is still underway is the promotion of our organization and lately, we have had a few membership renewals, which is great. Thanks to Deborah Porath, our new brochure will be available for distribution in early May so that will be a great tool to help us with advertising.

Also, I encourage all of you to check out our updated Website: www.abfddc.com. Thank you to Marilyn Carter who has been diligently working on transferring information from the old website to this one and populating it with current information.

I knew that we would be re-energized during April and I also know that there is a lot more to come. Check our website regularly for upcoming field trips and other interesting events.

Meanwhile, don’t forget to register for the Region VII meeting, which is happening from May 27

th to 29

th in

Edmonton, where we can continue to COMMUNICATE and DISCOVER with our friends.

As we continue to be EDUCATED during the month of May, let us never forget the following words of wisdom:

Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value. - Albert Einstein

Guest Speaker,

Jocelan Ladner

Submitted by Karen Ellis & Marilyn Carter

Jocelan Ladner, Reclamation Coordinator with the Regulatory, Stakeholder & Environmental Affairs Department at Canadian Natural Resources, was our guest

speaker at the April membership meeting. Jocelan has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences from the University of Alberta and is currently an articling Agrologist.

Jocelan first explained that Part 6 of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act requires that all specified land is to be reclaimed and a reclamation certificate obtained. Private lands are governed by Alberta

Environment; public lands are governed by the Alberta Sustainable Resource Development and First Nations lands are governed by the IOGC (Indian Oil and Gas Canada).

According to the Alberta Environment Upstream Oil and Gas Reclamation and Remediation Program, the company that owns a well or pipeline that is no longer productive is responsible for reclaiming the land, addressing surface reclamation issues and subsurface contamination, and applying to Alberta Environment for a reclamation certificate.

Before getting into the reclamation process, Jocelan explained the differences between remediation and reclamation. Remediation is the removal, reduction or

neutralization of substances, wastes, or

hazardous material from a site so as to prevent or minimize any

adverse effects on the

environment now or in the

future.

Reclamation is the process of reconverting disturbed land to its former state or other productive uses (equivalent land capability).

Construction of a wellsite requires that the location be level. The topsoil and subsoil are stripped off, (first 6 inches) and the parent material is contoured to create a flat surface. In addition, access roads are created. The objective is to cause minimal disturbance to the area as the entire area, including the access road, must be reclaimed. The topsoil and subsoil that is removed is placed around the site and saved, so that it can be used in the reclamation.

There are five (5) steps in the reclamation process:

Phase I Phase II Remediation Reclamation Reclamation Application and Certification

Phase I involves a non-invasive site assessment and no samples are taken at this time. Information from the assessment is used to make a conclusion regarding the likelihood of contamination on the site and will determine whether contamination is unlikely or provides information to direct Phase II sampling.

The process involves a review of all available data pertaining to the site. Company files are reviewed and include: well files, surface files, environment files, and any other available data. Regulatory files from the ERCB and forestry files are also reviewed. Further data and information is gleamed from historical aerial photos, personal interviews, previously completed site assessments and site visits. Investigations are conducted into the drilling waste disposal, various disposal methods, and mud systems. In 1996 Directive 50 (D50) was written to guide suitable disposals of drilling wastes in Alberta. It focuses on methods for on and offsite disposal methods for fresh water mud systems.

Phase II of the process is guided by Phase I information. It will determine if contamination is present, will identify the vertical and horizontal extent of contamination, and

provide post-remediation confirmation following the Alberta Tier 1 and 2 Guidelines (Dec 1, 2007).

The third step is the remediation phase which removes any and all harmful substances that may be determined to be present. The common areas of concern on a site include the areas around the sump, well centre, flare pit, spill areas, and the facilities where the tanks, pipelines and pigging stations were. The most common issues pertain to hydrocarbons, salinity, and metals. The most common remedial method is removal of material to a landfill. Other methods include moving the material into bio-piles that are burned during the winter months, land farming, soil washing/leaching, and vegetation.

Next is the reclamation or the reconversion of the area back to its former state. The parent material is re-contoured, the subsoil and surface soil, that was set aside and saved, is replaced and any seed or weed control amendments taken. The process takes into consideration the soil: its depth, horizon, texture, aggregate strength, colour, and profile restrictions. It looks at the vegetation to determine species type, cover, density and bare areas.

The final phase/step is the Reclamation Application. Requirements include: completion of a new form/application that was released in November 2007 and the application fee of $700. The application must include all the information from the previous 4 steps and a final detailed site assessment (DSA). The land owner is given an Acknowledgement of Information Disclosure form and has 30 days in which to sign that the information has been received. This is not a release but just an acknowledgement that the land owner has received the information. The last requirement is a professional sign

off.

Once the application is received, the

Alberta Environment

and Alberta Sustainable

Resource

Development conduct audits through field inspections. Due to the volume of reclamation applications, only about 15% of sites receiving a reclamation certificate are field inspected. Of these, 10% are for surface reclamations and approximately 5% inspections are on contamination sites.

Once a Reclamation Certificate is received, the Industry still has a 25 year liability for surface reclamation issues (topography, vegetation, soil texture, drainage, etc.) and a lifetime liability for contamination.

Questions

Q. What actually are you looking for when you are doing your onsite assessment?

A. Where equipment was located on the wellsite, as they are usually the biggest contamination areas and where drilling cuttings/waste were kept, such as the sump area or shale shaker area.

Q. What does D50 mean? A. D50 is a regulatory guideline that was issued in

October 1996. It contains information on sampling requirements, analytical requirements and procedures, disposal criteria and documentation requirements relating to drilling waste management and disposal. The entire directive can be “Googled” on the ERCB’s website.

Q. Were proper reclamations done on the wells that were drilled back in the 1930s?

A. Not really: regulations weren’t yet in place and for budget reasons most sites just sit waiting reclamation.

Q. When you remove the contaminated soil (remediation) are you not just transferring “problems” to another site?

A. Not really because landfills have liners to prevent seepage. In some cases the soil is cleaned and then used for land-spreading.

Q. What is the average length of time before a site is reclaimed or remediated?

A. The average is about 6 years.

Sue Dennis

I have been a D & D member since 2004 taking off a year in 2009 for personal reasons.

Being born and raised on the north side of Calgary and like any native Calgarian you know, ’if you grew up on the North side, you stay on the north side’.

I am from a family of 5 children the first 4 including myself are all 16 months apart and girls, so growing up in a 1 bathroom house had its challenges in the morning.

Currently I live with my adult son and like myself Brent is also employed at CNRL in accounts payable. My other child is a Doodledog named Ceili.

I have been in the Oil and Gas industry since the 70’s taking a few years off to do interior decorating for a large home builder in Calgary. Missing the downtown crowd I

came back to Oil and Gas. For 17 of the years in the industry I held a job in Gas Measurement. Currently I am a super user for a financial software package used in accounts payable with responsibilities that take me into the field offices.

Always being active, in my spare time I enjoy running. I run approximately 20km per week. I have been an instructor for the disabled for 7 years at COP working with the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiers.

My volunteer time is given to the Downtown Attractions Committee of the Calgary Stampede Board. I have volunteered with the downtown attractions for approximately 17 years enjoying the people that come back every year just to see you and to see that you are still volunteering.

I was on the Australia trip with Desk and Derrick and look forward to the next trip that the group plans.

Joanne Riggall

I was born and raised in a French Canadian Family and have 5 Brothers and 3 Sisters.

Growing up in a small town in southern Saskatchewan was always busy with house chores as I was the oldest girl. School and sports occupied the rest of my time. We played baseball and volleyball and we even went to the Provincials in basketball.

After graduating from the Val Marie High School, I attend Reliance School of Commerce in Regina for one year. After receiving an Office Clerk certificate I worked at the Regina General Hospital for 6 months before being accepted by the Province of Saskatchewan, Dept of Public Health to process the invoices generated by the 7 Saskatchewan Health Regions. Needless to say I received payables training early in my Career. I then transferred to the Dept. of Finance and spent three years doing bank reconciliations for three very large government bank accounts.

In 1978, we moved to Calgary and have never looked back as we both had ample job opportunities from which to choose. I worked at several oil and gas related companies, including Western Geophysical, DJ Surveys

and Canterra Engineering Ltd. Then in 1990 I picked up a temporary assignment with Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. The next month I was hired and it turned out to be 15 years in the payables department. I held the positions of payables clerk, supervisor and then manager. I retired in February of 2006

I married my husband Murray in 1971 and in 1975 our precious son Dean was born.

We now have a wonderful daughter-in-law and the cutest and smartest grandchildren in Helena (3) and Braydon (20 months). We are happy that Dean and Candice choose to live 10 minutes away from us in Coventry Hills. We see them every week and Dean still loves Mom’s cooking.

My current time is occupied with traveling, sewing and, of course, spending time with family.

I have been a member of the ABFDDC since 2004 and have enjoyed every minute of it. I was also fortunate to travel to China and Australia with our Club.

I have volunteered on the fund raising committee for the Australia trip, decorating at the May 2005 Region VII Meeting in Canmore and the hospitality suite at the ADDC 58th Annual Convention in Calgary last September.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS NORMAN Norman Travels to Wichita Falls Texas

By Diana Walker

Wichita Falls D&D received Norman on Wednesday the 10th

from the Baton Rouge LA club….he was so worn out because he got to attend a Mardi Gras Ball and the SUPER BOWL! But we got him started by giving him a new shirt….a Hotter-n-Hell Hundred (HHH) t-shirt. Wichita Falls is known for the HHH bike race each year and the race attracts some 10,000 people from all over the states! This ride is one day only and in the middle of August….HOT!! Our club President, Dani Harris, and I took him over to their headquarters, took his picture with the Executive Director and his new digs. We returned and pinned on one of our club’s pins…oh he looked GOOD!

Thursday it started snowing which is kind f unusual for North Texas….but it was beautiful! I asked my son Cory to take Norman to college (Midwestern State University) with him. Norman got his picture taken on the bronze statue of the college’s bike team. Then back to my office for some warmth.

Friday I was looking for a sitter for the weekend…it was my 5th

anniversary….and I found two sitters! Dani Harris would take him for Saturday’s Heart of a Woman Expo….she said he was ooed and awed over by all the women in attendance ….so he is a lady’s man indeed!!

Then Dani sent him with Becky Lewis for a day of horse-riding with The Mane Event! She took him to several of the fiberglass horses that were designed and decorated by local artists and placed throughout the city as a fundraiser. Some of the horses they visited were: Rebirth, Spirit, Boomtown Heritage, AiraBelle, Texas Star, Pony Express, Ms. Silver Buckle, Grace, Faith, Star and Hope! Yeehaw!! Sunday was Valentine’s Day and Norman asked Becky to accompany him to the movie Valentine’s Day….they had a great time! What a great weekend

Page 11: 2 0110 BOOAARRD DIOOFF RDIRREECCTTOORSS E · 2 0110 BOOAARRD DIOOFF RDIRREECCTTOORSS E President Roseline Cyr (W) 403.920.8852 (F) 403.269.8089 rcyr@suncor.com ... o As well, the

Page 11

Monday, Norman went to Rena Shaffer’s office and had some yummy candy, had his picture taken next to pictures of Jordan Shipley of the University of Texas Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Norman was told that if he had come just a few days earlier he would have been able to be with the ‘REAL THING’! But he missed out on the Desk and Derrick’s fundraiser at the World of Wheels, so we thought we could get Norman as close to the real thing as we could! Mr. Shipley and the Cowboy Cheerleaders were some of the celebrities at the W-O-W car show. Also at the car show were some of the most gorgeous cars, newer ones and older cars and all had owners that treasured their car! We contacted one owner that was local and had had her car in the show….she was more than willing to meet Norman and have a photo taken with him on Tuesday!!

Lastly on Monday I took Norman to the city’s famous Smallest Skyscraper….it is noted as the world’s smallest skyscraper! It was built in 1919 and according to legend a scam artist drew up some plans for the building but when asking for investors he did not tell them that the plans were scaled in inches rather than feet! Oh the sly dude! The investors were quite disappointed when they found out that the 500+ investment ended up a mere 10’ x 16’ 4-story building.

Tuesday, we met at the MPEC for Norman’s picture with a beautiful car. Felicia Garza was the owner of the 1993 Ford Probe and she won the Rising Star Award and Best in Class this year. Rena had received a W-O-W car show pin and shared with Norman.

From there we took him to the Pioneer restaurant, the old Pumpjack Diner and in front of a tank battery! He wanted to sit on the derrick but we told him that was not a safe place to play. Then downtown to the Train Depot where we found just a little bit of last week’s snow!

Wednesday Norman came to our Membership meeting at the Wichita Club where we placed him at the head table! We listened to a local geologist and got the Desk and Derrick gals together for a group picture! When we got back to the office I packed the little guy up with his blankie and sent him on his way to El Dorado Arkansas!

We miss Norman but we know that he is taking in all this fun and will share it with his mommy when they meet again in Houston, Texas! Bye Norman!

What are the benefits of cleaning with Norwex Microfiber?

Norwex Microfiber cloths are environmentally friendly. They can reduce the consumption of cleaning chemicals in your home by up to 90% while at the same time reducing your exposure to toxic fumes. This can make a big difference for anyone with allergies and chemical sensitivities. In important areas of our homes like bathrooms and kitchens, Norwex Microfiber cloths remove 99.9% of the bacteria from surfaces resulting in a cleaner healthier environment. I thank Sue and Joanne for stepping up so quickly for me and am hoping those of you who receive my request in the next little while will step up just as quickly.

May 2010

Greetings ADDC Members!

I’ll start off this letter with some great news! We have received the Teaching Guide for the EAB and it is being sent to the printer. The Board had approved 1,000 copies of the Teaching Guide to be printed initially and to include one free copy with the purchase of each 25 copies of the Energy Activity Book. We will let you know as soon as we receive them at ADO.

We have begun our 2010 journey to CONNECT, COMMUNCIATE and COLLABORATE. So far, I have attended the Region IV and Region V meetings. My first trip took me to the Region IV meeting in Rockwall, TX, where we were Energized by Education. Then it was on to Region V where we learned about geology in the area. Both meetings were a great success and everyone came away with a little more knowledge of the industry and the world we work and live in. The finishing touches are being put on the rest of the regional meetings. All the information is posted on the ADO website if you have not already registered.

You should have recently received the first edition of the 2010 Desk and Derrick Journal. I want to thank Audra Horton and Debbie English for their hard work in getting this out as planned. The articles are great and information from all over the Association was included so that all the membership can be aware of what else is happening around the regions. The next deadline of the DDJ is July 1. Audra and Debbie are already collecting articles for the next issue, so be sure to send any articles or pictures from your regional meetings that might be used in the next DDJ.

The ADDC Nominating Committee is looking for candidates for office in 2011. Are you ready to take the next step? Don’t worry, I thought I was stepping off the edge of the earth when I completed my submittal, but I had a lot of supporters that were ready to support me and catch me if needed. And yes, I have needed it already, but thankfully they were there. Think about it! It is a very rewarding experience and I am not even half way through my year.

If you don’t think you can take that step yet, take a small step by volunteering to either be a rep or a Committee Chairman on an Association committee. It is a great small step to take to start your journey and to learn how things work. Angie Duplessis is currently seeking volunteers for 2011 and the form is on the website.

Until next month….

May 2010

Spring has arrived! The windows are open, the birds are singing and the crows are fighting over space. The sun is shining and the warmer weather is so uplifting. Spring; a time to clean up after winter and enjoy the outside - it’s a time of renewal!

I have had some inquiries as to why member’s names could not be found on the ADO website. At the end of every year Andre lists all members as inactive until their registrations have been received at ADO. Then they are reactivated. So it is very important that you get your membership application and payment into Andre at ADO as quickly as possible. If your dues are not paid you will not be able to attend regional – you must be an active member.

The Edmonton Club is getting very excited about hosting regional. We all hope many of you can attend. It will be a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends, make new ones and experience some of the city of Edmonton. Rita Novak and the GAC Committee have a wonderful field trip planned Thursday and instead of a bag lunch at Leduc #1 there will be a barbecue before beginning the tour of the museum. The seminars sound very interesting and Friday night should be fun as we take in some of the excitement of the “Klondike”. I am very pleased that President Donna Siburt and Vice President Judi Adams will be attending. Neither have been to Edmonton before so it will be fun to show off our great city to them - and to all our visitors. Be sure and join us for open forum. There will no doubt be issues to discuss. I look forward to the business session to hear about what the other clubs have been up to and to an exciting Awards Luncheon. The Saturday evening banquet is sure to be entertaining as our guest speaker will bring us up to date on C02 Sequestration.

I am so happy to announce that Barb Schaefer from the South East Saskatchewan Club is letting her name stand for Region VII Director for 2011. Good for you Barb – I know everyone will give you their full support. Give some thought to volunteering at the Regional or ADDC level. Join a committee and go beyond your club and find out what happens in the rest of the association. It is an eye opener to a bigger world. Without you, our wonderful volunteers, this organization would not exist.

If you have anything you would like discussed at Open Forum please let me know.

Remember to keep those less fortunate in your prayers. There are many that are suffering and need our support.

Until next month…….

Lynne
