Example: Sitrep

During a presence patrol you have been approached by a local. He wants to know why the soldiers regularly walk through the town without using vehicles and without heavy weapons.

You explain to him the purpose of a presence patrol.

The local also says that he has found ammunition which he put in a plastic bag. He wants to hand it over to you.

You talk to this local resident the way you’ve been taught and in case you have any doubts, you get in touch with your commander. You act in accordance with the instructions he gave you.

• Local: Can I have a word with you? • You: Yes, of course. That’s why we are here. • (You introduce yourself, your buddy and the interpreter and you write down the name of the

man)• Have you got any information for me?• Local: You see, there are some things about you guys I don’t really understand. Everybody

knows that it is dangerous here, but you regularly walk through the town. Just like that. You don’t use any armoured vehicles. What’s more, you don’t carry heavy weapons either.

• You: Well, you see, we are on patrol. Our task is to talk to the local people to show you that we are here in this area for you, to guarantee your security. If we carried heavy weapons you wouldn’t even think of talking to us, would you?

• Local: You’re right. I wouldn’t talk to you like that. • You: People come to us to talk about their families and also about things which they think are

important to us.• Local: Yes, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about too. The other day I found some

ammunition lying in the street. I put it in a carrier bag which I left at home. Could you come along with me?

• You: One moment. I have to inform my commander about it.• (You get in touch with your section commander and make a report of the situation. You listen

to what he says that you should do)• You: Okay. I’ve just talked to my commander. We are to wait here until he has arrived.

Now you guys…Prepare:

During a presence patrol two locals come to you to give information. They tell you that they have frequently seen a civilian car driving through the village for a couple of days with two strangers in it. They also say that the car does not have any number plates. They noticed that the men especially focused their attention on the military base. The description is as follows:-They are both approximately 35 years old;-One of them has long dark hair and usually wears a white cap;-The other one is bald, with a beard and moustache and he has a scar over one eye.

After this conversation you report this information correctly to your commander and act according to his instructions.
