Unit-1

Define: NounBy the term Noun we mean name.Noun is name of a person, place, animal or thing.We define Noun as a word used to identify any class of people, places or things.

A noun may belong to a given class because of characteristic features of its referent, such as sex, animacy, shape, but counting a given noun among nouns of such or another class is often clearly conventional. 1

Name the kinds of Nouns.

There are five kinds of Nouns.They are:1} Proper Noun A noun belonging to the class of words used as names for unique individuals, events, or places. Proper Nouns begin with a capital letter. Example: India, Ahmedabad, Tiger, Sachin, etc.

2} Common NounA noun that represents one or all of the members of a class. Example: college, school, boy, animal, etc.

3} Collective NounA noun that is singular in form but refers to a group of people or things. Example: a group of monkeys, a bouquet of flowers, a bunch of flowers/keys/Grapes/papers, a groove of trees, etc.

4} Material NounA noun that refers to a material, substance or ingredient that other things are made from. Example: Iron, Milk, Gold, Wood, etc.

5} Abstract NounAn abstract noun refers to states, events, concepts, feelings, qualities, etc., that have no physical existence. Words which can neither be seen nor touched, they can be felt. Example: happiness, hunger, anger, love, etc.
