• Teaching approach: Communicative Approach• Integration of skills: Listening to the teacher and to each other, writing a web

about a celebrity, speaking about that celebrity by using the web, reading and analysing a fact file, organising an oral presentation

• Materials and resources: strips of paper with words for students to assemble, picture of Taylor Swift1, Taylor Swift web of personal information, copies of QR codes2, https://sites.google.com/site/practicumtpd2015/home assembled by the teacher in Google Sites, whiteboard, blu tack, Internet access through Wi Fi

• Pedagogical use of ICT in class or at home: mobile phones• Seating arrangement: As is. Students will work in groups of four; for this

purpose, only chairs will be moved since seating arrangement does not allow moving desks due to lack of space.

• Possible problems / difficulties and their possible solutions during the class: some mobile phones do not carry QR codes readers; I will ask students to download one from the app stores in their mobiles; one reader will be enough for each group. In case the Wi Fi signal does not work and we cannot use the Internet connection, I will deliver a copy of the fact file to each group.

• Classroom management strategies: Special attention will be paid to students respect for each other when presenting their celebrity; I will specifically ask to listen to each group and ask general questions to get feedback and check they have been listening.

• Potential problems students may have with the language: the fact files include information about celebrity’s age using dates of birth; I will explain this concept by asking students how old their celebrities are so that they understand the information they need to retrieve from that fact. Personal and possessive pronouns are familiar to them but they still confuse them, I will draw on the board some stickmen showing the difference.

• Assessment: I will assess the ss’ knowledge of word order by having students standing in line at the front of the class and moving them when necessary until they order the sentence correctly, the speaking activity will assessed though a presentation, pronunciation of /h/ will be assessed by repetition and when students give their presentation.

Routine 2’I will greet students in L2 in order to let them know the lesson has begun. I will grant them a little time to predispose themselves and pay attention.

Warm-up 7’Purpose: to work on word order by assembling words into sentences

I will stick on the board Taylor Swift’s picture I used the previous class and ask ‘What can you remember about her? What’s her name?’ EA ‘Taylor Swift’ T ‘Yes, very good. How old is she? Do you remember?’

Once students make contributions I will tell them ‘Now we are going to work in groups of four. Organise who you are going to work with, you have one minute.’I will show students the strips of paper and say ‘Here I have

information about Taylor Swift. Each group will organise that information into a sentence.’For the sake of demonstration I will write the board:

NAME TAYLOR IS HER SWIFT

I will ask students ‘Is this information ok?’ EA ‘No’ T ‘No, it isn’t. Can you help me put the words in order?’ Once they tell me the right version, I will distribute the strips of paper to each group and say ‘Read the words and organise them in the right order.’The sentences to assemble will be:• She is twenty-five years old.• She has got one brother.• Her favourite colour is blue.• She is from the USA.• Her favourite music is pop.

Once students finish I will summon them to the front of the class and ask them to hold up the words in the right order. ‘Come to the front and form a line. Show the class the words in the right order, please’ In case the sentence is not in the right order, I will ask for the class’s help to correct and have the students move to the right position instead of moving the strips of paper with the words.I will focus on pronunciation of ‘her’ having students repeat the word, and explaining /h/ is much softer in English than Spanish. Then, I will stick the sentences on the board, and leave them as reference of the following activity.

Transition: Very good, everyone! Now, pay attention please for the next activity.

Activity 1 20’Purpose: to read a fact file on line in smart phonesI will show one of the QR codes and ask the class ‘Do you know what this is?’ If one of the students is familiar with them, I will ask him/her to explain what it is in L1, if not I will tell them ‘It is a code that you read with your mobile phone. It takes you to a site on the Internet’, if necessary I will explain this in L1.Only Nokia smart phones carry QR readers, any other brand has available ones in the app stores. There is wi fi signal in the classroom which students can access; I will grant them two or three minutes to download a QR if necessary; one reader will be enough for each group but if everyone can successfully download one, it would be better.I will tell students ‘We are going to work with the same groups of four; each group will get one of these codes. With your mobile phone application, you will read this code’ In order to demonstrate, I will use my own mobile phone to show them how to

read the code. I will go on ‘When your phone reads the code, it will take you to an Internet site with information about a famous person’The QR codes will lead them to a fact file I have already assemble in Google Docs, these are:

Once students read the codes, I will ask each group ‘Who is your celebrity? What information have you got about him/her?’

I will call students’ attention and show them a web about Taylor Swift, which is similar to the one we analysed the previous lesson. It should look like this:

Page 5: Secondary: Lesson Plan 3

Then I will say ‘This is a web about Taylor Swift.’ Point to the board, I will say ‘She is from the USA; she has got one brother…’ Until I finish reading the sentences. I will go on ‘What information do you have about your celebrities?’ As they read the fact file, I will call their attention to ‘Birth’ and ask the class how old each celebrity is so as to make clear that the focus should be on his/her age. After that, I will go on ‘Each group will draw a web about their celebrity in their notebooks.’I will move around the classroom assisting students, helping them with their webs. I will ask questions such as ‘How old is your celebrity? What is his/her favourite food/colour/music/singer?’

Transition: ‘Great work! Your webs are wonderful. Now, we are going to tell our partners about our celebrities’

Activity 2 10’Purpose: to talk about a celebrity using a web of personal informationI will say ‘Now each group will make a presentation of their celebrity using the web you have just drawn.’ I will hold up my Taylor Swift web once more and tell students about her ‘She is Taylor Swift, she is 25 years old…’ and so on. ‘Each group will come to the front and tell the class about their celebrity’ I will grant one or two minutes to have them organise which information each member is going to deliver.I will allow them to draw the web on the board if they want and if the timing allows it. I will ask their permission to audio record their presentations in my mobile phone to post them on my blog.

Closure‘You have worked very hard today. Well done, everyone! See you on Thursday.’
