CARBON & FOOD
Estimates of UK food-related climate emissions had put the figure at 20% of total UK consumption emissions. 2009 Report 'How Low Can We Go' includes land use change in overseas countries, such as deforestation driven by our demand for food, the figure jumps to 30 per cent.
Flying 1kg of asparagus from California to UK uses 900 times
more energy than a seasonal home-grown equivalent.
The amount of sulphur oxide from the 15 largest ships equals the combined amount from all the cars in the world

MYTHS OF FOOD SCARCITY
"The world must increase food production or there will be mass
starvation."
The present food crisis - in which nearly a billion people are
going hungry - is used as proof of the food scarcity plaguing the
planet.
The reality is that people are going hungry today not because there is not enough food, but because they are poor and can't afford food

TRANSITION WALMART
Four supermarkets (Tesco, Asda/Wal-mart, Sainsbury and Somerfield) control 75% of UK food retailing
In Britain a new Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's or Asda opens every other day.
In 1960 small independent retailers had a 60% share of the food retail market. By 2000, their share was reduced to 6%.
The UK Cold Chain is responsible for approx 15% of total food chain emissions (Garnett, 2007)
Six processors control 93% of UK dairy processing and six supermarkets control 65% of liquid milk sales.
Just two companies Rank Hovis (part of Tomkins PLC) and Archer Daniels Midland Milling account for more than 50% of bread flour milled in the UK.

to Scotland by 2050 970 m (Foresight Report 2007)Obesity in
children is now common. In Scotland nearly 1 in 5 (18%) boys and

BEYOND THE TYRANNY OF CHOICE
What is going to help create local seasonal food is a shift in
our metric
from desperate craving to taste and pleasure
from weekly shopping to daily shopping
from convenience to savouring the experience
from high-tech to spade and dung
from global to local
from local to neighbourhood
from highly processed to fresh, raw and simply cooked
from infinite choice to seasonality
from fast food to slow food
from food experts to food for everyone
from chefs to ccoks
from community gardens to community agriculture
and a shift in our planning and infrastructure to allow
tight restrictions on supermarkets
large-scale restructuring of urban space (from parks and gardens to
allotments)
but more crucially urban agriculture
Until recently, anyone who suggested nationalising the banks would have been derided as a quack and a crank, as lacking the most basic understanding of the functioning of a complex, globalised world. The grip of orthodoxy disqualified the idea, and many more, without the need even to offer a counter-argument.
