Definition
Situs Inversus totalis is a genetic condition that causes the organs in the chest and abdomen to be positioned in a mirror image from their normal positions.
• Eg. In the abdominal cavity, the liver is positioned on the left side instead of the right, and the stomach is on the right side instead of the left.
Prevalence
Situs inversus totalis has been estimated to occur once in about (8-10,000) births.
20% of patients with situs inversus have a rare abnormal condition called Kartagener's syndrome.
Only 50% of patients with Kartagener syndrome have situs inversus

Possible Cause !
• Mutation in the coding region of DNAH11(Bartoloni et al., 2002).
• Developmental stage of an embryo !
Signs and Symptom
• No medical symptoms or complications .• 3-5% have functional heart defect• 25% have an underlying condition called
primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD)
DiagnosisIt can be detected using• X-ray• CT• MRI• Ultrasonography
A doctor/RT may suspect• Heartbeat ?
Treatment
• No cure for situs inversus.• If other complications are present,
the symptoms will be treated accordingly.
Special concerns !
• Failure to recognize situs inversus ?• Attention to the left and right sides of the
patient and the left and right labeling of images .
• Organ donation !
