What is suicide and how often does it occur?

• Suicide – noun.1. The intentional taking

of one’s own life.2. suicidal – someone

who intends to take their own life.

• Suicide occurs more often then some may think.

• Tenth leading cause of death.

• Every 17 minutes someone is the United States commits suicide.

• What about the world?

Thesis

• Although society can boost teens self- confidence, society also plays a part in teens decision to commit suicide by affecting them physically, and mentally.

• Society can portray “perfection” as: Beautiful, curved, and well – liked.

Mentally, society is capable of making teens, lose self – confidence, self worth, and their will to live.

• Disney portrays the fact that girls need to be beautiful to be successful. The ugly people are portrayed as bad, and the beautiful people, portrayed as good.

• Cyber bullying – mentally they feel alone• Harassment - they can feel pain mentally and

What’s next???

• Many people believe they need to keep up with the latest “trends” so when they can’t, it makes them feel out of place and worthless.

• Society decides what is cool and what isn’t. If your not cool and society doesn’t accept you it can make teens feel mentally exhausted.

Stereotypes

• Many teens believe they need to act a certain way to fit in. They need to act like the damsel in distress, or the Strong man. Society tells us that to be loved we need to act like something we aren’t.

• It’s all an act to fit in, but when we don’t, we feel worthless, beaten, broken, and DEAD.

• Love yourself and others will love you.

Society is Physically Challenging

• Society is physically challenging for teens who are suicidal. They have to deal with self – harm including, cutting and eating disorders.

• Many teens may harm themselves without even knowing it.

• According to the APS teens cut themselves due to severe depression.

• They may be taking steps to suicide

• Think that it will take their mental pain away.

• The scars left behind.

• Teen girls are 5% more likely to develop an eating disorder then teen males.

• Girls may be trying to impress society

• Anorexia• Bulimia• Society pressures teens

to believe they need to be skinny to be “pretty.”

• According to APS, teens may think they are doing something small but it is something big.
