To perfect and exploit their late father's recipe, the sons took over their mother's kitchen. BoonPar, the quiet leopard, toiled whilst Boon Haw, thegregarious tiger organised. Together theyproduced Ban Kim Ewe, Ten Thousand Golden Oil,panacea for all ills. In 1918, Aw Boon Haw codeveloped Tiger Balmas a trade mark, with his younger brother AwBoon Par. Through artful packages and clevermarketing, with the brand name of Tiger Balm (虎標萬金油)or Tiger Ban Kim Ewe or "Ten ThousandGolden Oil" is the trade name. The brothers latermade their versatile balm a household standard, first in their native Rangoon, then Singapore,Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, and the rest ofSoutheast Asia. Just when everything was going so great inRangoon, a squad of policemen showed up at thebrothers’ house to serve them with an arrestwarrant. Boon Par and Boon Haw were chargedwith illicit trafficking in opium, and counterfeiting. The British Chief Inspector of Police, Cyril Taylor, put the brothers under house arrest. But thepolice was not able to pin anything on thebrothers. It is humiliating to the brothers, BoonHaw decided to leave Burma and moved thebusiness to Singapore. Although Aw Boon Par wished to stay in Rangoon,it was because in additional to his two officialwives(Piah Lan, Daw Saw who remain inRangoon), he has a secret wife, Hong Yin inRangoon. Boon Haw who had settled in Singaporein 1926 convinced him to immigrate, move thefamily business and found the precursor of today'sHaw Par Corporation. Haw Par Villa

Located along the Pasir Panjang road, Singapore'sHaw Par Villa is actually a theme park depictingstories from the Chinese mythology. The greatentrepreneur Aw Boon Haw built it in the year1937 for his loving brother Boon Par, thus thename Haw Par Villa came into being. Haw ParVilla, the quintessential place depicting Chinesefolklore is a great tourist attraction of Singapore. There is another Haw Par Villa in Fujian, China. The story of Aw family is full of drama coveringBurma, Singapore, Hong Kong; much more thanTiger Balm.....it is unfortunate that the businessempire of the Tiger Balm King Aw Boon Haw wereall sold, and only Sing Sian Jit Pao was still remainwith Aw Boon Par's daughter Cheng Sim or SuriSantipongchai, and now it has passed to the nextgeneration. The saying of the properties cannotpassed through to 3rd generations is true for TigerBalm family, it only passed to the 2nd generationto Sally Aw. However Aw Boon Par will be happythat at least Sing Sian Jit Pao has passed to 3rdgeneration.....

History

Tiger balm was developed during the 1870s in Rangoon, Burma, by herbalist AwChu Kin, son of a Hakka herbalist in China, Aw Leng Fan. His father had sent himto Rangoon in the 1860s to help in his uncle's herbal shop. Eventually, Aw Chu Kinhimself set up a family business named Eng Aun Tong meaning "Hall of EverlastingPeace". On his deathbed in 1908,he asked his sons Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Parto perfect the product. By the 1920s, the sons had made it a very successfulbusiness empire in Burma with its runaway success, the Tiger Balm medicinalointment.[1]

Named after Aw Boon Haw whose name means "Gentle Tiger", Tiger Balm is aherbal formulation for external pain relief. Tiger Balm is available in severalvarieties, the "cold" Tiger Balm White (recommended for use with headaches) andthe "hot" Tiger Balm Red. The strongest version is called Tiger Balm Ultra.[2]

From the package notes that accompany Tiger Balm

Tiger Balm is made from a secret herbal formulation that dates back tothe times of the Chinese emperors. The Aw brothers, Aw Boon Haw andAw Boon Par, inherited the formulation from their herbalist father who leftChina. They called it Tiger Balm, after Boon Haw, (whose name in Chinesemeant "Tiger") who was instrumental in devising the remarkable sellingstrategies that made Tiger Balm a household name in many East andSouth Eastern Asian countries today. The herbal painrelieving remedyhas since been inherited by many religious affiliations and organizationssuch as the Aleph Zadik Aleph.

In 1888, Lim Chin Tsong (aka LCT) at a young age of 18, tookover the business soon after his father's passing. Although theprimary business of Lim Soo Hean was rice, in 1891, LCT was themain agent for Burmah Oil Company (UK) selling Kerosene inRangoon and later on exporting to Penang after buying severalsteamers. When his fleet of steamer ships later expanded, regular schedules between Rangoon toPenang,Sinagpore,HongKong,Swatow and Amoy carrying rice andgeneral merchandise.

Several other businesses besides rice and oil were: mining oftin, gold, lead, wolfram, plumago, copper, sugarcane & rubberplantations. He was probably also known as the SugarKing of India** at thatperiod as he ws the managing agent of Burma Sugar RefineryCo.;(note: **Burma was a British colony under BritishIndia). LCT also started the Burma Match factory inKhanaung and employed a labour force of at least 300.

Two ships were used in WW1 under the Royal Australian Navy formerly two Bibby Line steamers:the Shropshire(1) & Cheshire(1) renamed Seang Bee & Seang Choon (or Choong) respectively.

Other Fast Facts on Lim Chin Tsong:

* Was awarded the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) by King George V in 1919 for his aide inWW1.* Member of the Lady Dufferin Fund.* Member of the Burma Legislative Council until the reformed Govt. of 1922.* Member of the Rangoon Municipal Committee; Burma Educational Syndicate; Trustee andAdministrator of Victoria Memorial Park* Founded the AngloChinese school and racing stable owner on the Rangoon Turf Club.

From1917 1919, he built a magnificent starshaped pagoda residence on Kokine Hill, Rangoonwhich became known as Lim Chin Tsong palace at a cost of 220,000 Rupees! He met andentertained many dignitaries, royalty, figureheads and the notable Prime Minister of France, M.Clemenceau in 1920.

Upon his death in Nov 1923, many dignitaries,Royalty and Statesmen of all nations, the rich andcommon folks attended his funeral that streched for miles from his palace to the Fukien cemeterynear the present airport location in Yangon. Reportedly the Prince of Wales,Louis Mountbatten (1stEarl Mounbatten of Burma) was also present at the funeral. Sadly though, the cemetery has beenreclaimed in 1999 by the present Burmese Govt to make way for the expansion of the InternationalAirport of Yangon. Most of the local Chinese have moved the tombs of their ancestors to anotherlocation. Unfortunately I am not sure what happened to Chin Tsong's tomb if it survived thebulldozer's blade.Palace Photos
