• To learn how the Olympics were during the 1920’s, while America was experiencing a superficial prosperity (Entertainment, Literature, Industries, etc. experienced major developments).

• To learn about how the games have changed over time.

Winter of 1924• The 1924 Winter Olympics were the first Winter Olympics that took place in

Chamonix, France from January 25th – February 4th.

• 16 different countries sent athletes to compete, resulting in 258 total athletes.

• There were only 16 different events:– 4-man bobsled – Biathlon – Curling – Figure skating (men's, women's, pairs) – Hockey – Cross country Skiing (18k, 50k) – Ski jumping – Nordic combined skiing – Speed skating (500m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m, combined)

Winter of 1924 continued…• Interesting Facts:

– The highest number of medals were awarded to Finland (11) and Norway (17); then US and Great Britain with 4; Austria, Switzerland, and France received 3; Sweden won 2; and Canada one.

– Canada’s only medal was won in hockey. They defeated Switzerland 33-0, Czechoslovakia 30-0, Sweden 22-0, Great Britain 19-2, and finally they beat the United States 6-1to win the gold.

– Originally called the ’International Winter Sports Week’ so certain countries would attend.

– A week later the international ski committee called the games the official ‘Olympics’.

Summer of 1924

• Location: Paris, France

• Dates: May 4th to July 27th

• 44 different nations participated

• 3,089 athletes competed; 135 women and 2,954 men

• 16 different sports/events were played

– First Olympics where the three flags were raised; the Olympic flag, the host country’s flag, and the next Olympic host country’s flag.

– These Olympics were the last with tennis as an event until 1988.

– This was the first time athletes stayed in an Olympic Village, group of wooden cabins.

• Location: St. Moritz, Switzerland

• Dates: February 11th - February 19th

• Athletes participating: 464(438 men, 26 women)

• 25 different nations participated

– The Olympic flame was first lit at these games.

– The tradition of the parade beginning with Greece and ending with the host nation started this year.

– First games that took place within 16 days instead of over a couple months.
