Why are agile approaches so important to the project management profession and PMI?

The May 2016 Harvard Business Review article on innovation, “Embracing Agile,” summarizes why agile approaches are so important. “Agile innovation methods have revolutionized information technology. Over the past 25 to 30 years they have greatly increased success rates in software development, improved quality and speed to market, and boosted the motivation and productivity of IT teams. Now agile [approaches] … are spreading across a broad range of industries and functions and even into the C-suite.”

In 2011, PMI added the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)® certification

With continued popularity of agile approaches, the forthcoming sixth edition of the PMBOK® Guide, scheduled to publish in 2017, will include expanded coverage of agile, including significant detail in an appendix.
