positive attitude towards the future. Hope is ... anticipation, belief, confidence,

aspiration, expectancy, optimism. Hope is the motivational desire that you keep inside of you while waiting for the results or out-come of an event. It is the thoughts that you keep in your mind that anticipate an outcome (positive, good, pleasant, rewarding, reliev-ing, happy outcome) that you want. Hope is obtained with optimism, looking for solu-tions where others see only problems. Hope is our desire to excel and to achieve, despite the odds.

Prophetic Model of Hope; Inspirational & Empowering

The entire life of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is a living example of the quality of hope in action - he patiently persevered, de-spite insurmountable odds and hardships, in the face of enemies numerically larger and stronger, yet despite all of this, he never gave up hope of establishing the Religion of Is-lam; and never failed to inspire those around him

Inspiring othersFIRST INVITATION: When Allah in-

structed the Prophet [Q 26:214] to invite his relatives to Islam, no one believed except a young 11 year-old boy named Ali. He was mocked for having only a little boy support-ing him. Yet, history documents the great-ness of both the Prophets success and the little boys unwavering dedication.

Not Despair in SelfAbu Talib, the uncle of the Prophet, was

sent by the Quraysh to negotiate with the Prophet in an attempt to have his influence minimized and the Prophet had the positive attitude and confidence to say; O my uncle! Even if they put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left hand, I will not devi-ate from my mission; either I succeed in my task or I perish in the process. This, at a time when the nascent Muslim community were few in number and about to be under politi-

cal and economic siege. Not Despair in SituationKHANDAQ: Surrounded by a confedera-

tion of armies, under siege, The Prophet par-ticipates with his companions in digging a trench around the city of Madinah; he hits the rock with his pick and sparks fly. Salman al-Farsi (who gave the idea of the Trench) asks ... O Prophet! What is the bright sparks I saw the three times you struck the rock with the pick? The Prophet replied: As for the first strike, I saw in the spark the palaces of Shaam, which Allah opened to us. As for the second, I saw the palaces of Persia and its bright cities, which Allah opened to us, As for the third; Allah presented us with the keys of Yemen and saw the doors of Sanaa.

He was saying this to a group of people who were surrounded by enemies, not sure whether they would live to see the next day; yet he inspired them with his confidence and hopeful attitude with hope of a glorious fu-ture, a glory that his people eventually real-ized.

HIJRAH: The Prophet was avoiding the Quraysh trackers who were bent on kill-ing him, and he and his companion (Abu Bakr) hid in a cave on Mount Thawr out-side Makkah. His friend was fearful and the Prophet motivated him by saying (as the Quran documents 9:40) do not be aggrieved, Allah is with us.

from the Children of Israel to the Children of Ismail, and the Centrality of Jerusa-lem in the history of Islam.

Prophet Muhammad received the com-mand for 5 daily prayers on this blessed night. This daily ritual is an expression of epitomic proportions challenging the earthly beings to unquestionably submit and surrender oneself to the One and Only Creator. In his ascension beyond the do-main of earthly space and time, he met Abraham (Ibrahim), Moses (Musa), Jesus (Isa) and others (peace and blessings of Allah be upon all of them) and led them in prayers at al-Aqsa and then in the heavens. The concept of per chance does not fit the workings of the Creator. Everything He does is for a purpose. Prophets revisit to Jerusalem since the changing of the Qibla is for no other purpose but to re-emphasize the centrality of Jerusalem, as the first and eternal Capital of Islam.

Each year, we relive the memory of Isra (Night Journey) and Miraj (Ascension) - from Makkah to Jerusalem and then to the heights of heavens. Fourteen centuries has helped more than one billion people rec-ognize and accept the Truth and accept the Prophetic leadership and his contributions to the humanity. Since past few decades, there seems to be confusion on the Cen-trality of Jerusalem. This must be cleared. Muslims must remember their responsibil-ities. The restoration of Jerusalem as the eternal Capital of Islam and establishing peace and justice for the people therein is imperative. There are myriad tools avail-able today for this pursuit. Chief among them is will.

The biggest impact that the medium of Internet has had in todays modern world is the elimination of distance. Muslims must adapt to such modern tools of today with great speed. This medium must be harnessed to educate and to recognize the differences between myths and realities.

Miraaj - Reviving the Spirit of Hope The Isra and Miraaj is a momentous oc-

casion that occurred at a very crucial stage in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). This uplifting (miraj = ascend) experience took place in the year the Prophet lost two of his valuable pillars of support; his uncle Abu Talib (whose political authority and care for the Prophet prevented the Makkans from harming the Prophet) and Khadijah (Proph-ets beloved wife, confidante, partner and financier of the nascent Islamic movement). It was after the miraaj that the Prophet had to leave Makkah, yet that departure marked a turning point for the nascent Muslim com-munity and changed the course of history. There are many practical and spiritual les-sons we derive from the Miraaj; but we focus here primarily on the attitude of hope that it inspires through the life-lessons from the example of the Prophet (pbuh).

Ideal Attitude towards the FutureOur attitude towards the future influences

our mind-set towards the rest of our life. Be-ing positive about life ahead is among lifes greatest motivators. Hope is the best attitude towards the future; this realistic expectation that something good or better could/will hap-pen if only we continue doing the best we can. The human potential for hope is an es-sential antidote to despair and to harboring a

Isra (The Journey) and Miraj (The Ascension)

    By: Saad Allah Khan*

Following the year of sorrow, Prophet Muhammad was blessed with the experi-ence of Isra (the Night Journey) and Mi-raj (the Ascension). A journey that has no parallel in human history, begins from the Kaba in the city of Makkah to Mas-jid al-Aqsa in the city of Jerusalem, and concluding beyond the horizons of human comprehension in the heavens.

Prophetic acts are not simple miracles as we may understand today but they are clear Signs from the Majestic Creator. We are made to witness such Prophetic expe-riences as a trial and test of our faith in our absolute servitude to Allah and our

unquestionable loyalty in the following of His Prophets. To believe in them and their mission is to believe in the All Encom-passing Creator. We testify that we make no distinction between one and another of His Messengers (2:285). From Adam to Ibrahim to Muhammad and everyone in between, they are, but Allahs Messengers with a clear Message and a defined Mis-sion to establish Divine Law, Supreme and Sovereign over all other man-made laws. And that is for the good of all humanity.

Among many other lessons that the event of Isra and Miraj offers, some are the gift of daily prayers, the transfer of leadership

Glory to (Allah) Who did take His servant for a Journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the farthest Mosque, whose precincts We did bless - in order that We might show him some of Our Signs: for He is the One Who hears and sees (all things). (17:1)
