Tough Row to HoeToora West, in Victoria, Australia, is not an easy garden. With the sandstone peaks of the Grampians National Park as a backdrop, Toora West is thriving in a rough-and-tumble landscape thanks to dedicated owners Cass and Charles Kimpton.

Over half a century, Cass Kimpton has transformed Toora

West, in Victoria, from a paddock to a paradise.

투라웨스트 정원을 찾은 날, 최고 기온이 섭씨 40도가 넘을

거라는 기상예보와 함께 빅토리아 주 소방청은 산불 위험 경고를

발령했다. 정원주 캐스 킴프턴 여사는 사륜 오토바이에 몸을

싣고 나무들 사이로 호스를 이리저리 끌고 다니며 물을 뿌리느라

분주했다. 남반구에 위치한 호주는 북반구와 달리 현재 여름에서

가을로 넘어가기 직전이다.

늦여름인 지금 이곳을 찾는다면, 캐스는 온 가족의 사랑을

듬뿍 받는 켈피종의 목양견 스위트피와 함께 반갑게 맞아줄

것이다. 그러면서도 계절마다 개성을 뚜렷이 드러내는 정원의

호젓한 공간 사이로 구불구불 이어진 붉은색 자갈길을 앞서

걸으며 더 좋은 날 오지 그랬느냐고 아쉬워할지도 모른다.

이를테면 하늘이 씻은 듯 쾌청해 저 멀리 그램피언스 국립공원의

사암 봉우리가 선명하게 보이는 봄날 말이다.

예술적 감각을 겸비한 정원사인 캐스는 반세기 가까운 세월

동안 이곳을 일구며 터득한 솜씨를 겸허히

여긴다. 이곳으로 처음 이주했을 때 그녀는

정원 일에 대해서는 아는 게 전무한

새색시였다. “솔직히 처음에는 감당할 수

없는 일처럼 느껴졌어요. 무지해서 오히려

그냥 손 닿는 대로 이것저것 시도해볼

수 있었어요. 그렇게 하나씩 배워가면서

열정도 커졌죠.” 캐스의 말이다.

투라웨스트는 변화무쌍한 빅토리아

주의 기상 조건에 그대로 노출된 벌판에

자리 잡고 있다. 캐스와 찰스 킴프턴

부부가 처음 이곳에 왔을 땐 정원은커녕,

강하고 억센 갈풀로 뒤덮인 작은 방목장에 소나무 두어

그루뿐이었다. 오랜 노력 끝에 수원(水源)을 찾아 물을 저장하는

데 성공한 부부는 이 척박한 땅에 정원을 조성했다.

“지하수 공급이 원활하지 않았어요. 늘 물을 찾아다녀야

했지요.” 캐스의 설명이다. “찰스한테 훌륭한 천공기가 있었던

덕에 8킬로미터 떨어진 곳에서 수질이 아주 좋은 담수원을

찾았고, 지름 5센티미터의 관과 펌프를 설치했지요. 그 후로도

수원 찾는 일을 멈추지 않았고요. 그렇게 우리는 늘 가물었던

이곳을 물이 풍성풍성 흐르는 곳으로 바꿀 수 있었어요.”

부부는 정신없이 바쁜 일상 속에서도 어떻게든 짬을 내 정원을

가꿨다. “농사를 지으며 아이 넷을 돌보고 말과 소를 키우는

틈틈이 정원 일을 했어요. 숱한 시행착오를 겪었죠. 다들 여기서는

절대 영국산 나무를 키울 수 없을 거라고 했어요. 그럼에도

도토리로 싹을 틔워 키운 어린 참나무를 옮겨 심었죠.” 여태껏

살아남아 우람하게 자란 참나무를 가리키며 캐스가 말했다.

The day’s forecast calls for temperatures over 40C,

and the fire authority has posted a wildfire warning. Cass

Kimpton started the morning on her four-wheel motorbike

moving several hoses underneath well-established trees

to keep them moist in the face of a potential bushfire. At

Toora West, a garden in Glenthompson, western Victoria,

in the southern hemisphere, it is late summer.

The garden is on the edge of the Grampians National

Park, and if you were to visit at this time of year, Cass and

Sweet Pea, the family’s beloved red kelpie, would welcome

you at the stables. As she guided you along the red gravel

paths that snake through the garden’s intimate, seasonal

spaces, she would tell you that she had hoped it would be

a better day — more like spring, when the light is so clear

you can see every rock on the distant

sandstone peaks of the Grampians

from black to purple and pale blue.

A natural, painterly gardener, Cass

is modest about the skills she has

learned over nearly half a century.

She first moved here as a new bride,

when Toora West was a paddock. That

girl, she says, knew nothing about

gardening. “To be honest, it was fairly

overwhelming when we first moved

here, but I just started fiddling,” she says. “My passion

grew the more I learned.”

The homestead sits in open country exposed to every

element the Victorian climate can muster. When the

Kimptons first arrived, there was no garden — just bare

paddocks, covered with Phalaris, a tough and persistent

grass, and a couple of pines. But Charles and Cass have

succeeded in planting and keeping trees alive through a

determined approach to finding and storing water.

“There was no good underground water when we

moved here, so we were always interested in finding

water,” she says. “Charles got a good boring machine and

found very good fresh water 8km out, so we put in a 5cm

pipe and a pump. Over the years, we found more springs,

and it’s gone from the worst-watered place to the best.”

“이 땅이 허락한 나무만

심어야 해요.” 나무를 잃지

않는 게 가장 큰 소임이라는

정원주 캐스의 말이다.

“You grow the things you can grow,” says

Cass, who sees keeping the trees thriving as her

main challenge.

인고의 산물 기후 변화로 해가 갈수록 여름 더위가 기승을

부리는 탓에 나무를 잃지 않는 일이 캐스의 가장 큰 소임이자

투라웨스트의 최대 목표가 되었다. 그 노력의 일환으로 나무

아래와 화단 가장자리에 구근식물을 심는다. 은회색 다육식물은

관상용 배나무와 사과나무 아래 지면을 덮는 유용한 역할을 한다.

“낙엽수 밑에는 떨어지는 나뭇잎을 받을 수 있도록 화초를 빽빽이

심어야 한다는 사실을 깨달았어요. 그걸 뿌리덮개로 활용하는

거죠. 그렇게 해야 땅심을 키울 수 있거든요.” 캐스의 설명이다.

투라웨스트 정원 안팎에는 레드검과 퀸즐랜드병나무를

비롯해 20여 종의 유칼립투스나무가 있다. 그중에서도 캐스가

가장 좋아하는 건 검은색 줄기에 연분홍 꽃이 피는 아이언바크다.

하지만 실제 정원에서 가장 시선을 끄는 것은 게스트하우스 서쪽

끝, 지주로 줄기를 받친 레드딜리셔스종의 사과나무다. 20년

가까이 가지치기를 하며 길들였다는 이 나무는 캐스가 정원에

쏟은 인고의 세월을 고스란히 보여주는

증거다. 처음 심을 땐 채 1미터가 되지

않은 크기에, 가지도 두 줄기뿐이었다는

나무는 현재 완벽한 좌우대칭을 이루며

게스트하우스 벽을 거의 뒤덮다시피 했다.

“정원은 끊임없이 변합니다. 우리는 그

리듬에 맞춰 쉼 없이 화초와 나무를 뽑거나

심어요. 정원을 가꿀 때 중요한 건 적절한

균형이거든요. 뭔가 마음에 들지 않으면

곧바로 제거해요. 아주 무자비해져야만

해요. 서늘한 기후에서 자라는 수종을

여기서는 키울 수 없거든요. 아무리 탐이

나도 이곳의 조건에 맞는 것만 키워야 해요.” 캐스의 설명이다.

캐스는 남편이 늘 힘이 되어준다고 한다. “찰스는 나더러 보통

사람들이 뭔가를 심는 것보다 더 많은 걸 뽑아버린다며, 그 통에

자신의 벌채용 톱이 다 닳아 없어질 판이라고 놀려요. 그러면서도

새로운 나무를 심느라 쇠지레 가지고 씨름을 하고 있으면 기꺼이

다가와 도와준답니다.” 캐스가 빙긋 웃으며 말했다.

“자연이 안겨주는 모든 것과 씨름해요. 가뭄부터 우박을

동반한 폭풍우, 서리, 뜨거운 바람과 찬 바람까지, 이곳의 험한

자연 조건은 이루 다 말할 수 없을 정도지만, 잘 견뎌내고 있는 것

같아요.” 캐스의 설명이다. 하지만 정원의 굳은 심지만이 이곳을

지탱하는 원동력은 아니다. 캐스도 큰 힘을 보탠다. “3개월 정도

한가로이 여행을 떠났다가 돌아와 정원을 돌보는 삶. 그런 호사는

불가능해요. 한 주도 빼놓지 않고 공을 들여야 하지요.” 그녀가

뜨거운 햇살을 받아 반짝이는 머리카락을 쓸어 올리며 말했다.

mAKiNG iT WoRK The couple managed to squeeze

gardening tasks into their hectic daily lives. “The garden

started through trial and error, in between looking after

children, cattle and horses. People said you could never

grow English trees out here, but I dug up and transplanted

young oaks nurtured from acorns, and now they’re the

framework of the whole garden,” Cass explains. Of the

original 40 oaks, eight substantial trees remain.

Now, with summers getting hotter each year, Cass

sees “keeping the trees going” as her primary gardening

challenge. Silver gray succulents provide useful ground

cover beneath ornamental pear and Malus trees. “I’ve

learned it’s best to plant thickly beneath the deciduous

trees to catch the fallen leaves, then let them turn to

mulch,” Cass says. “This way you

build up the soil.”

There are some 20 species of

eucalypti at Toora West, including

red gums, Queensland bottle trees

and one of Cass’ favorites, a black-

trunk eucalyptus with soft powder-

pink flowers, commonly known

as ironbark. One of the garden’s

highlights is an espaliered Red

Delicious apple tree at the west end of

the guesthouse that has undergone

nearly two decades of training. It is a testimony to Cass’

persistence. With only two branches when planted, it now

completely blankets the wall in perfect symmetry.

“The garden is always changing. It’s just about getting

the balance right. You’ve got to be really quite ruthless.

You grow the things you can grow,” Cass says. “It’s a very

typical Australian garden. It copes with everything —

everything that nature’s chucked at it. And that’s a lot,

sometimes, from drought to horrific hail storms, frosts,

winds. But it seems to come through,” she adds. However,

the garden’s hardiness is not the only thing that keeps it

going — Cass has a big hand in it as well. “I couldn’t just go

to the beach for three months and come back and expect

to see a garden. It’s a real week-to-week proposition,” she
