MMO CPMMO CPMMO CPMixed Metal Oxide Coated (MMO) Anodes
A Product of
Where absolute reliability is the only choice...
metal oxide anode has an extremely low consumption rate in the range of 0.50 to 4 mg/ ampere-year depending upon the particular Cathodic Protection applica -tion conditions. The MMO CP anodes are designed for a lifetime of 20 to 30 years or even longer depending upon the application and customer requirement.Current OutputsThe MMO CP anodes have high current outputs. The recommended maximum current
density depends upon the resistivity
and composition of the electrolyte. As with all anode systems the lifetime is a function of the current density.
MMO AnodesThe substrate, usually Titanium, is chemically resistant and mechanically robust. The substrate is activated by the MMO coating. The MMO coating has excellent electro catalytic properties. The evolution of oxygen and chlorine and/or mixtures of the two gases are therefore achieved at a low stable anode potential. The MMO coating consists of mainly IrO2/Ta2O5 and is suitable for use in soil with or without carbonaceous backfill, fresh water, brackish water, seawater and as well as concrete.
CompositionThe MMO CP coating is a mixed metal oxide type which includes precious group metal oxides. Anodes with mixed metal oxide (MMO) coating mostly consist of the base material titanium or niobium onto which precious metal oxides of the platinum metals group with other valve metals are applied. Usually iridium mixed oxide coatings are used for chloride-free electrolytes, whereas ruthenium or iridium/ruthenium mixed oxide coatings are used for the production of chlorine and hypochlorite. The oxide composition has been extensively developed for opti-mized electrochemical and long lifetime in the different cathodic protection environments.
ManufactureThe MMO CP coating is produced by applying solutions containing the precursor materials to the specially treated titanium substrate. It is then thermally treated at elevated temperatures to convert the precursor materials to their oxides. The catalyst paints are applied in many layers and heat treated after each coat. This paint - stove process is repeated many times until the desired total loading of the MMO coating is obtained. The process achieves very good adhesion between the coating and the titanium substrate through mechanical and chemical bonding. Strict Quality Control proce-dures are adhered to throughout the MMO CP anode manufacturing process. The resulting mixed metal oxide MMO coating shows extremely good electro-chemical and low wear rate (long lifetime) characteristics.
Durability and Service LifeMMO CP anodes have been especially developed to withstand the simultaneous generation of chlorine and oxygen. Simul-taneous anodic generation of chlorineand oxygen occurs in low salinity/brackish / fresh waters. A condition known to be very severe for anodes. The mixed
MMO CPMMO CPMMO CPMixed Metal Oxide Coated (MMO) AnodesFor Impressed Current Cathodic Protection
The recommended maximum current outputs are• Sea water, 750 A/m2;• Brackish / fresh water, 150 A/m2;• Soil (carbonaceous backfill ), 100 A/m2 • Muds, 50 A/m2.Type of MMO CP AnodesMMO anodes are available in all shapes and forms including the following:Rods, wires, tubes, discs, sheet, expanded mesh, strip and also tailor made to the customer application and requirements.CablesThe anode header cable can be attached according to customer's specific require-ments includes the following:XLPE/PVC, HMWPE, HMWPE/PVDF (Kynar), EPR/CSPE.ApplicationsMMO CP anodes are recommended for use in a wide variety of cathodic protection applications like for example:• Inside protection of tanks, condensers, pipelines and heat exchangers.• Outside protection of ship hulls, platforms, piers, dams, offshore structures and power station-inlets.• Buried structures ( used with carbona- ceous backfill ).• Tank bottom protection.Advantages• Higher current output• Low consumption rate.• Light weight• The titanium substrate remains constant throughout the design life of the anode. • Resistant to low pH and high chlorine gas generally produced in cathodic protection Groundbeds.
Golconda Corrosion Control Limited manufactured anodes are used world wide as components in impressed current cathodic protection systems for corrosion control of metal structures.
The advantages of using Silicon IronImpressed Current Anodes have been Widely known throughout the Cathodic Protection Industry for over 40 years. Their low specific resistance, suitability for fresh water, sea water and deep groundbed installations added to their proven low consumption rate and dependability have enhanced their position as the number one choice available to Corrosion Engineers.

GeneralThe Terminator K-5A ( Polarisation Cell ) consists of multiple pairs of stainless steel plates immersed in potassium hydroxide electrolyte solution. An oil seal floating on the electrolyte prevents evaporation, absorption of atmospheric gasses and excessive foaming under high current flow. DC current flow through the Polarisation Cell causes a film of gas to form on the plates, offering high resistance to low voltage DC current. As the applied voltage across the cell increases, current flow through the cell increases, causing the thickness of the polarization gas film to increase. When the leakage threshold is exceeded, the film starts to break down, and the cell resistance quickly decreases as the applied voltage increases. AC voltages and higher DC voltages see the Polarisation Cell as a dead short.
All current ratings have a safety factor built - in and are verified by a laboratory test. Therefore, cells may be installed in applications upto the published rating with adequate safety.

An Agni shunt is an accurate, very low
resistance resistor which is placed "in line"
with the wire carrying the current to be
measured. When current flows through
the shunt, a small voltage is developed
across the shunt which is proportional to
the current flow. The resistance, which is
the ratio between the voltage across the
shunt and the current flowing through it, is
constant for any particuar shunt and is
one of its important parameters. The
shunts are described by the voltage drop
that occurs with a certain current; for e.g.
"50 mV at 50 amperes". This shunt shall
have a resistance of 1mΩ.
The other important characteristic of a
shunt is how much maximum current can
safely flow through it. The higher the
current that flows through it, the greater
the temperature rise of the shunt. A shunt
shall operate safely upto 145°C. Beyond
this, the alloy from which the shunt is
made,"manganin" can undergo permanent
changes of resistance if it gets hotter, it
could even burn up.
A calibrated Agni shunt makes it possible
to measure protection currents with the
highest degree of accuracy, reliability
and ease.
The Agni shunts are designed specifically
for the cathodic protection industry and
are manufactured from the finest materials
available.
