ABSTRACT
A study on Pee Chun- deok's Essay Literature

Kum-a Pee Chun deok is the best korean writer of
modern essay. His essay has many readers and is the
pronoun of essay. He made many things of ordinary life to
sublime with literature through form of language. His
works tell the value of slight things. And his rhetoric is
almost verse rather than prose. All these things thank for
him to be a poet, English scholar and translator of many
foreign poems.
He entered his poetry world publishing his collected
poems Lyrical little Ballads and Little Ballads in Sin
Dong A . Next, he published Essay Relations , poetry
Life and translation Sonnet . He didn't publish many
works, but his works are very elaborate and have high
literary spirit. So many readers love his works very much.
Korean essay literature has been developed with long
history and tradition in quantity and quality. But a study
on Korean essay is still first step. Compared with poetry

and novel, a study on essay is very passive. The reason
is that essay is thought it doesn't have any theoretical
system and ignores form. Usually essay is seen writing of
non-form and writing written in free. But essay has
form in its own way. It only means that essay has very
free form compared with poetry and novel which have
strong form.
Thus this paper has purpose representing that essay has
form in base of Pee Chun deok's works.
First, eighty-one pieces of essay in Relations are
analyzed. They are divided into four kinds as like lyrical
essay, character essay, recollection essay and instruction
essay. Lyrical essay is described in arrangement structure,
character essay in basic structure, recollection essay in
frame structure and instruction essay in tension structure.
Second, his main rhetorics are figures, emphasis and
variation. Figures has simile, metaphor and personification.
Simile was most often used in sentence. In case of
metaphor, it was used in all writings and personification
used in only one piece. Emphasis is expressed exclamation,
present tense and repetition. The way present tense and
repetition were used very much, but exclamation wasn't
seldom used. Variation way is quotation and question. He
even quoted twenty-one pieces in his works.
Third, way of description has four kinds like following,
expressive, suggestive, objective and subjective
description.
Expressive description way shows any event and situation
alive. Suggestive expresses symbolism through excellent
metaphor, objective describes character real and subjective

indicates writer's emotion best.
Last, he made essay had been just a travel's sketches
into literature position. He wrote his works not in free but
in passion. He is estimated as a writer who leave many
mysteries in history of essay literature and a forerunner
who raise essay literature high.
