Reading

9 Read the article and choose the correct sentences A –F to fill the gaps. There is onesentence you do not need.

Technology plays a large part in the lives of most students today. (1) ___ Handwritten

essays are also becoming a thing of the past. Many schools equip their classrooms withcomputers for use during lessons, and students are expected to be computer literate at anearly age. (2) ___ Therefore, school libraries are no longer as necessary as they once were. The world of learning is changing quickly and dramatically. But how far can technology goin education? Will teachers still be necessary in ten or 20 years’ time? Or will onlineteaching be the norm? Now, there’s a thought!

In Denmark, the government is taking the use of computers in schools one step further.Computers are now being used in the exam room itself. (3) ___ Using computers in exams is

not completely new for Danish students. They have been able to type up their exam essayson computers instead of writing them by hand for several years. However, now, under a newscheme, students in exams are allowed complete access to the Internet. (4) ___ The only

thing they cannot do is communicate with anyone else online. So, no emailing or messagingwhile in the exam room.

Opponents to the idea believe that using computers like this in exams opens the door tocheating. They say it is impossible to monitor the sites the students visit or any contact theymay make with friends outside the exam room or even other students in the same exam. (5)  ___ They point out that exams these days are no longer about remembering facts and figures. They are about analysing things. Examination questions these days do not usually ask aboutwhen, who or what. They ask why and how. It’s hard to cheat using the Internet on questionslike this.

Surely, computers are such an important part of the learning process today that it seems anatural step to use them in exams? For those worried about cheating, it’s important to

remember that in exams the students are under a lot of pressure and have to do a lot of thingsin a very short time. There isn’t really a lot of time to cheat. Perhaps computer use in examswill become standard procedure in a few years’ time. What do you think? We’d love to hearyour views. Post a comment on our website.

Reading

9 Read the texts about different students’ plans for a career in writing. Forquestions 1 –5 choose from the students A –D. The students may be chosenmore than once.

A Katy Parker

People are always asking me what I’m going to do in the future and until now I haven’treally known how to reply. It’s difficult to explain that I think my future lies in writing. When I first mentioned it to my parents, they didn’t laugh but they acted as though it wassomething I would grow out of, and they wer e confident that I’d get a ‘proper’ job

eventually. But I’ve always been serious about being a writer. I just love the Englishlanguage and I’ve been a keen reader since the age of five. I’ve done a lot of short stories

and some have been printed in magazines. What I’d really like to do is write thrillers. I knowthat sounds crazy, and many people don’t think thrillers are real books at all. But I love agood puzzle, so that’s what I say now. I’m going to be a thriller writer. Then I wait to see theexpressions on people’s faces.

B Giles Branson

My dad and my uncle were both journalists and wrote for Sunday newspapers. Wealways had people in the house who were connected to newspapers and news, and I grew upwith their conversations in the background. It must have rubbed off on me because I

desperately want to follow in dad’s footsteps and become a journalist too. I don’t think I’dlike to do exactly the same as he did –  he was a political journalist, because I’m not thatserious about politics but I’d like to travel and maybe write reports from different places in

other countries. I can see myself writing about environmental problems in Australia or theSahara or somewhere like that.

C Terry Barnes

When you’re a kid, you have no real idea of what you’re going to be doing in the future. You might have a dream of being a famous footballer or actress or even a princess (that wasmy younger sister’s strong belief!). But most people don’t really know the sort of personthey’re going to be, so how they can decide on a future career at a young age is tricky. I wentthrough secondary school thinking I was going to be a vet, looking after animals, but then Idiscovered that I wasn’t that keen on cutting up insects, let alone operating on dogs orhorses! So, that idea didn’t work out. It was only last summer , the summer before I leftsecondary school, that I suddenly knew what I wanted to do, and that was to become awriter. I’ve always done drama in my s pare time and I suddenly realised that I was prettygood at writing dialogue. So, next term I’m going to start a screen writing course. With luck ,one day I’ll be writing the soaps and dramas you watch on TV!

D Sarah Turner

We had a creative writing course at my secondary school in our last year, and I went on it

because I’ve liked writing for a long time. I always wrote diaries when I was younger and Ialso used to write short, funny stories for the other kids in my class to read, and that was at primary school! But it soon became quite clear that I was not going to be the next greatEnglish novelist. I’m just not patient enough and I don’t think I’ve got the skill to writecomplex books. But I am clever with words, so I’m going to go into the advertising world, writing adverts. What you need in that job is to write things that are catchy but short andfunny. I think it’s just the right profession for me because there will be lots of variety and I’ll

be working in a busy, fast-moving world. Somehow, I don’t see myself being isolated, writing chapter after chapter. That’s not really me at all. But I’m glad I went on the course

3 Complete the text with one word in each gap.

It is very difficult to imagine what the future (1) __________ be like. Some people earn a

living by predicting the future but if they’re predicting something that they think will happen in a hundred years’ time, there’s no one to prove them wrong, is there? I think that must be a pretty good job. In a hundred years’ time, when we’re all living on the moon, no one is goingto say ‘Oh dear . Jack Martin got his predictions wrong back (2) __________ 2012,didn’t he?’ They won’t really be able to ask for their money back! If we look back 50 years

and study what people thought (3) __________ happen then, they didn’t really do very well. They thought that everyone would have personal helicopters and eat tablets instead of meals.

Page 13: 1BACH Ingles

That hasn’t happened. So, what about the next 50 years? I’m going to try to be a futurologist

for a moment and make some predictions for the year 2052. The weather is definitely goingto change for the worse, and we’ll all probably be living in much smaller places. The

population of the world will have increased dramatically, and a lot of animals will (4)  __________ extinct. Technology will continue to develop and control our lives, andeverything will be even faster than it is today: computers, transport, cooking and so on. Of

course, we’ll all be using robots to help us at work and at home. The experts will have madea lot of advances in medicine by then, but we’ll all be much poorer, so we (5) __________

be able to afford to go to hospital. I think society will be clearly divided into the people who‘have’ money and the people who ‘have not’. Unfortunately, I think I’ll probably be one ofthe ‘have nots’ unless I set up a business as a futurologist and get paid for predictions that probably won’t happen!

Reading

9 Read the article about a TV series. Decide if the statements are true (T), false (F) ornot mentioned (NM).

The Time Traveller who has Survived the Test of Time

People have always been intrigued by the possibilities of time travel, so it is notsurprising that one of the most popular science-fiction TV series in the world is about that

very subject. Doctor Who, produced by the BBC in the UK, is also said to be the longestrunning sci-fi series ever, having started in November 1963 and, after a break of about 15years from 1989 to 2005, still continues today. There have been 770 episodes of the series! Itis certainly a widely-loved and much respected series, which has won awards all over theworld and is still appreciated today by people in over 50 countries.

So, why has Doctor Who survived the test of time? One answer is because of the very

clever writing involved in creating and continuing the series. Doctor Who is unique in thatthe central character, the Doctor, a Time Lord who travels backwards and forwards throughtime helping people and challenging evil, has had ten reincarnations. This ability of theDoctor to regenerate himself in another body when death approaches has been built into the

plot to enable different actors to take over the part and allow the character of the Doctor tosurvive as long as we wish him to. So far, there have been 11 Doctors, the most recent being

Matt Smith, who took over from the talented David Tennant in 2010.

Doctor Who was originally created for family viewing and has nearly always been shownat prime time on television, most often on Saturday evenings. However, it quickly earned the

reputation for being very frightening and in the early days there were complaints that DoctorWho was too scary for children. It was giving children all over the country nightmares! It is

true that this side of Doctor Who has also been one of its attractions. As well as the mostoutrageously monstrous monsters from other planets, with numerous eyes, legs, teeth, etc,the writers also managed to create terrifying villains from the most ordinary sources. Therewere the policemen with blank faces, the stone statues in a churchyard and the models in ashop window. These stories captured the horror of the familiar becoming sinister. And, of

course, no one could ever forget the Doctor’s personal enemies: the Daleks, machine-likerobots with scary mechanical voices, threatening to ‘exterminate’ everyone they met. The

series has terrified generation after generation of British children, who traditionally watchedthe Doctor from ‘behind the sofa’.

Surprisingly, Doctor Who was initially intended to be an educational programme as well

as an entertaining one. The Doctor travels both back and forward in time, on our planet earthas well as in outer space. This gave the series scope to set adventures in different time

periods and different areas, informing children about history, geography and science. In theearly days, a historical adventure alternated every second week with a future-based one. The

Doctor has been seen at important wars, in the Jurassic period and with great figures from

history: Victoria, Churchill and so on. Even in recent times he has returned to the Frenchrevolution and had adventures with Charles Dickens, Agatha Christie and Vincent Van

Gogh.

Doctor Who is so much a part of British culture that nearly everyone you ask will be able

to hum the theme tune (the first purely electronic theme music to be made), name the timemachine (the Tardis), describe and imitate a Dalek and say which actor played the Doctorwhen he or she was a child. Although absent for a few years, the Doctor returned with avengeance in 2005 and now has a whole new following. The creativity of the programme’swriters and the status of the Doctor as a national hero will ensure that he remains on ourscreens and in our hearts for a long time to come.

We would think thatmusic lovers would generally be creative people, and this has been proved correct. It is alsono surprise that jazz and blues fans are relaxed and easy-going. It may be more of a surprise

However, (5) ___ to the survey, both sets of fans are creative and relaxed but notoutgoing. One difference that the survey indicates is that classical music lovers are self-confident while the heavy metal fans are not. The results of the survey are very interesting

An Amazing BrainThe brain is an amazing organ, and the complexities of the way it works will never be

fully understood, but scientists have made a lot of progress in explaining how and whydifferent parts of our brains are used. (1) ___ These people are sometimes called ‘autisticsavants’ and their mental abilities are brilliant and inexplicable. Some are able to do amazingmathematical calculations at high speed. Others can perform music without ever having hada music lesson in their lives. One American savant, Kim Peek, the person who inspired thefamous film Rain Man, can read two pages at the same time, one with each eye, and has totalrecall of the 7,600 books he has read. A British savant Stephen Wiltshire can draw incrediblydetailed drawings of places after seeing them once.

It is believed that savants may have these exceptional abilities because of some form ofdamage to the brain which allows an unusual form of communication between the different

sides of the brain. (2) ___ The problem in understanding a savant’s abilities has been that most are unable to explain how they do these extraordinary things either because theirlanguage skills are less advanced or because they themselves do not know how; the abilitiessimply ‘come’ to them.

However, scientists have found one savant who has excellent linguistic ability and is ableto describe his thought processes clearly. This man’s name is Daniel Tammet. Scientists

believe that what Daniel can tell them may help unlock some important secrets of the brain.

Daniel is capable of doing extremely complicated mathematical calculations in his headin a matter of seconds. He is obsessed with numbers and counting. (3) ___ While they were

playing in the playground, he was standing there counting the number of leaves on the trees! For him, counting is an absolute joy. It makes him happy and content. (4) ___ He gets

uncomfortable when there is too much disorder. For example, going to a supermarket is notan enjoyable experience for him as he is distracted by counting the tins and calculatinganything and everything that he sees there. Likewise, working nine to five in a typical office

environment would be difficult. (5) ___ He can also speak seven languages and is in the process of writing his own language called Manti!

According to Daniel, he sees numbers as different colours, textures and images, and whenhe calculates complex numbers, the images change and form new images which give him theanswers. If Daniel’s explanations can help scientists discover more about the way the brain

works, then perhaps we can all learn to develop our own potential to a greater level.

A  He therefore works from home helping clients with literacy and numeracy skills.

B  However, Daniel needs to be in control of what is happening around him.

C  Some scientists believe that we all have the potential to use this ability, but we do notknow how.

D  Apparently, there are very few people who can match this in the world.

E  He says he has been like this for as long as he can remember and it set him apart fromother children at school.

F  There are, however, a certain number of people whose brains seem to work in acompletely different way to most of us.

Reading

9 Read the text about three people’s opinions on a website about scams. Match thepeople A –C with the questions 1 –5.

1  Which person gives some advice on avoiding a scam? Person ___

2  Which person was extremely surprised to learn about a particular scam? Person ___

3  Which person has personal knowledge of someone who has lost money in a scam? Person ___

4  Which person says that the people targeted by a scam don’t want to tell anyone about it?Person ___

5 Which person talks about a scam that uses the postal service? Person ___

A

I, personally, have never been the victim of a scam, at least as far as I know, but I knowsomeone who has, and it’s such a sad story. The person I’m talking about is an old lady who

lives near my parents. She lives alone and only has a daughter who goes to visit her fromtime to time. One day, the daughter found a huge pile of letters in the lady’s bedroom, andthey were all scam letters saying that she’d won something in a lottery or a competition.Apparently, the old lady had replied to many of them and even sent money to pay what thescammers called ‘the insurance on her winnings’. When the daughter investigated further,

she found that the old lady had lost thousands and thousands of pounds! I think it’s terriblethat these scammers target older people who don’t really realise what lies these people aretelling them. They’re from a generation who believed that most people were basicallyhonest. So, if someone tells them that they’ve won a large amount of money in a Canadianlottery, they don’t immediately think ‘how could I have won money from a lottery that I

never entered?’. They do what they’re asked to do. They send money and then never hear

fr om these people again. It’s appalling. B

The scam that I think is really terrible is one that’s been highlighted recently ontelevision. It’s when people (mainly women) meet someone on a dating website and that person later gets them to send him or her a lot of money. Apparently, there’s a whole systemat work here, not just nasty individuals. The organisation they showed on television operatesfrom a country in Africa, and the men who email the women often pretend to be Americansoldiers. Because they live in another country it’s unlikely that they will ever be asked tomeet up, so they can keep pretending for a long time. They develop a romantic relationship

with the woman and then, after a few months, invent some story where they need somemoney. Some women have sent up to 50 thousand pounds to a person like this! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the programme. Of course, when they finally discover the truththe women are so ashamed that they don’t report the theft and just hide what’s happened, soit happens again and again. I don’t understand how people can play with someone’s

emotions like that. These women must be absolutely devastated afterwards and never trustanyone again.

C

We are warned often enough about online fraud, but it is still happening, and these scamscan cost people huge amounts of money. It’s difficult to choose one to talk about becausethere are so many, but I think one of the most dangerous is the one involving banks. I have acouple of friends who have received emails from what they thought was their bank. Theaddress and logo were identical and the emails looked official and genuine. They asked therecipient to update their personal information, so my friends were supposed to type in their

account details, addresses, passwords, etc. In fact, the emails weren’t from the banks butwere very clever copies. My friends are on the look-out for online scams and know as well

Page 30: 1BACH Ingles

8/11/2019 1BACH Ingles

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/1bach-ingles 30/63

as I do to be very careful replying to emails that ask for personal information like that, but

there are a lot of people out there who are unsuspecting. The scammers can get their handson information that they can use to make themselves a lot of money. Any online users must

be sure to update their security and never give information like this unless they are very surethat the request is genuine. Banks actually say that they would never ask for information inthis way, so the easy rule is NEVER respond.

The twenty-first century seems to have brought with it a whole range of new medical problems. Many of these are related to our increased use of technology. For example, thereare now several problems connected with using computers and mobile phones. Certain partsof our body ache because they are overused, like thumbs from too much texting, eyes from peering at small screens repeatedly, elbows because of lifting phones to our ears and our earsfrom the increased volume of music we constantly listen to on MP3 players and at clubs. Weare getting more ear infections because we share headphones. The list goes on and on.

However, one of the biggest dangers to health today is not a direct result of technology but itis definitely related to it. That is stress.

Stress has always been with us. The feeling of being overwhelmed and unable to control

aspects of our lives seems to have been part of the human condition forever. But experts saythat stress levels, and health problems caused by stress, have gone up alarmingly in recent

years. One reason for this is that technology has speeded up our lives dramatically.Everything can happen instantly: communication, travel, accessing information, and so on.This means that, whereas we used to have thinking time between communications both atwork and in our personal lives, today that is gone. People do not have enough time to donothing, and sometimes our brains need that.

Commuting to work used to be a time to relax and prepare for the day ahead or to winddown after a busy day. Now it is the opposite. If you’re driving, the rush hour is usually onelong traffic jam and if you’re on the train, you’ll probably be on your mobile phone or on

your laptop continuing the day’s work. Students don’t escape either. Children are undermuch more pressure to take and pass more and more exams. So, the stress factor can start at

an early age.

So, how can we best deal with our stressful lives? It is important that we try, as stresscauses not only mental problems but physical ones too. People under a lot of stress can

become nervous and moody, and even suffer from severe depression. It also affects the heartand can cause problems related to blood pressure. It can affect our sleeping patterns, and

when we don’t get enough sleep that leads to other problems too.

According to the experts, we need to try to cut out some of things that cause us moststress in our daily lives. Obviously, it is not possible to stop studying for exams or going to

work, but we can reduce stress if we approach these things in the right way. Of course, stressaffects different people in different ways, but one answer is to write down a list of things that

you find stressful and find ways round them. It may be that you tend to leave revising fortests to the last minute, and this is stressful. The answer would be to spread the revising over

a longer period. If driving in the rush hour stresses you out, try putting on some calmingmusic to distract you from the situation. If it’s possible, switch off your phone on the trainand read a book! We all need time to relax, a time when we can do something we enjoy, such

Page 37: 1BACH Ingles

8/11/2019 1BACH Ingles

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/1bach-ingles 37/63

as reading or watching a film. Another excellent way to fight stress is to do some form of

exercise. This has the advantage of improving our general fitness as well as reducing stresslevels, so definitely try to fit in some sport or gym time.

It is inevitable that the pace of life is going to speed up even further, and we shall have todeal with it. But as long as we allocate ourselves some down time, we’ll stay healthy. So,

switch off that laptop and chill out!

sentences A –F to fill the gaps. There is one sentence you do not need.Where were you on Friday night, the 4

th of March in the UK? (1) ___ As part of World

Book Year, a campaign to raise interest in and promote the reading of books resulted in anenormous book giveaway. One million books were given away by ordinary people, or

‘donors’ as they were called.

The way it worked was this. (2)  ___ There was even a ‘chicklit’ book on the list. That is,one of those wonderfully witty, up-to-date books written for today’s female market. Then,

people from all over the UK applied to be a ‘donor’. They had to say on their applicationwhich book from the list they would like to give away and why. If their application wasaccepted, the ‘donors’ were sent 48 copies of the book that they had chosen. (3) ___ These‘donors’ were from all sections of society. There were teachers, factory workers, policemen,

businessmen and many more, all united by one thing: a love of books and a desire toencourage others to share that pleasure. The people they chose to give the books to could be

Page 43: 1BACH Ingles

people they knew or people they simply met on the night. The idea was also that the

recipients would then pass on the free book to others after reading it.

In recent years, books have had to compete with TV and film as a form of entertainment, and today many people are concerned that the value of a book is no longer appreciated asmuch as it used to be. (4) ___ Certainly those interviewed on the night were very enthusiastic

about the idea. As one ‘donor’ said, ‘Many people think that reading books is an intellectualactivity and is generally boring. Too many of us have the memory of being forced to readheavy classics at school, probably at far too early an age to really appreciate them. This can put you off reading for life! In reality, reading can be a fascinating activity which is bothescapist and informative. For me, a book opens up a whole new world. I’d really like to passthat pleasure on.’

There were definitely a lot of happy people around on World Book Night. We saw manyof them on television at a special event held in Trafalgar Square, London where some of theauthors of the books on the giveaway list gave interviews, talks and readings to anenthusiastic crowd. (5) ___ They said that people should realise that the cost of a bookreflected the work of the author, and prices of books should be raised rather than cut, as theyhave been in recent years in competition wars between supermarkets and book stores. They

believed that this project would not help those book stores who were trying to survive intoday’s economic climate. However, the critics were in the minority, and the book night has proven to be a great success. Don’t forget that if you did receive a free book , read it and then pass it on!

A  It was hoped that World Book Night would introduce books to a wider range of people.

B  People do not read enough these days, and that is a great shame.

C  Firstly, a team compiled a list of 25 books, including examples of all genres of fictionfrom thrillers to classics.

D  A few critics of the project complained that by giving away books for free it could

undermine the value of books for people, rather than increase itE  If you were out and about, then it’s quite possible that you were the lucky recipient of a

free book!

F  On Friday night, the 4th of March, these people all gave away their copies of the book to

whoever they wanted.

Reading

9 Read two bloggers’ responses to the question ‘What is top of your technology wishlist and why?’ and decide if the statements are true (T), false (F) or not mentioned(NM).

A

It’s an interesting question, particularly now when every day we see more and moregadgets in the shops and we begin to wonder how far technology can actually advance. Forme, there’s one big hurdle science needs to cross, and I shall be delighted if I’m still aroundto see it when it happens, as I’m sure it will. One day I’m quite sure that the technology willexist to replicate what they’ve been doing on science-fiction programmes for years: theability to transport a person immediately from one place to another. This amazing ability hasfascinated people for centuries. We’ve read stories about it and seen films where transportingis a basic form of getting from A to B. We’ve even seen magic shows where conjurors tryevery trick in the book to fool us into believing that they have this ability. There’s a greatfilm called The Prestige about two magicians from Victorian times who were obsessed by

this. But the real truth is that it has never been done. And how often have we thought howuseful it would be to be able to press a switch and travel immediately to a destination?Imagine, no more problems waiting in airports or squeezing into crowded buses. No morewasting time in traffic jams! I think inventing a transporter would be the single mostimportant development our society could ever see. It would completely change our way oflife. All the airlines would be out of business for a start! It will happen, it’s when that’s thequestion.

B

Wow, that’s a difficult question. Technology is moving ahead so quickly at the moment

that it’s difficult to know what gadgets are just around the corner and which aren’t even onthe drawing board. Things like robots and computer games are developing all the time.

They’re two things that really interest me. Robots are getting smaller and cleverer, and Idon’t think it will be long before they are regularly used in daily everyday life situationsrather than as they are now, mainly in industry. I can see them helping with chores aroundthe house, cooking, cleaning, and so on. I know some robots are used in this capacity at themoment, but it’s only the very rich who can afford the luxury, and I think they’re still a bitclumsy. But apart from robot development, what intrigues me is how far the developers ofcomputer games will go. On Star Trek ™ , that incredible sci-fi series of the 70s which stillhas a cult following today, for relaxation the crew of the star ship go to the Holodeck. Therethey can interact with holograms from different historical periods of situations of theirchoice. Now, wouldn’t that be a great form of entertainment? I can’t see it happening soon but one day, who knows? That is definitely at the top of my technology wish list!

Reading

9 Read the article from which some sentences have been taken out. Choose thecorrect sentences A –F to fill the gaps. There is one sentence you do not need.

News reporting has changed considerably in recent years. In the past, news stories fromaround the world were reported by official correspondents based in different countries orsent to places when newsworthy events happened. (1) ___ We regularly see reporters ontelevision reporting live from earthquake zones, war-torn towns, sites of bad accidents, andso on. However, in addition to these brave souls, there is a whole army of amateurs or semi- professionals who are used by the news networks worldwide to send in their own coverageof experiences and scenes occurring on their doorsteps.

(2) ___ The BBC in the UK started a monitoring service a long time ago, in 1939, when50 ‘monitors’ listened to foreign news broadcasts to pick up useful information. That numberrose to over 500 within three years, and today it also employs people in other countries totrack and translate TV and radio reports from 150 countries in over 100 languages. Many ofthese overseas monitors are members of the general public who report regularly on what is

happening in their particular regions through listening to the local news coverage. (3) ___This has continued right up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and events happening in the ‘ArabSpring’ of 2011. In addition to these semi-professional reporters, many photos that appear onour screens are also from reports sent in from bystanders who happen to be in a certain placeat a certain time and who record what they witness on mobile phones.

Such immediacy of images and information from around the world is only made possible

by the advanced technology that has given the world social networking sites and websiteslike YouTube™. Pictures can be taken on a mobile phone and then reproduced on TVscreens the world over within minutes or even seconds. People with news to pass onfrequently use sites like Twitter®. (4) ___ The first picture that the world saw of the eventwas from the phone of this tweeter.

However, not everyone believes that this immediacy of news is always a good thing. Some feel that there is potential for misleading the audience. (5) ___ But this takes time, andunfortunately the appetite for continued dramatic coverage of events is not easily satisfied.

A  We have learned immediate information from them over the years about such historicalevents such as the Second World War, the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 and the fall of theBerlin Wall in 1989.

B  Photos can be altered, staged or misinterpreted, and if news networks accept informationand images from unofficial sources, the reliability must be checked.

C  But it is also very fast-moving because what is today’s top story will be history

tomorrow.

D  A famous ‘tweet’ was sent when a plane crashed into the Hudson River in New York

from a passenger on the ferry that was on its way to rescue passengers in the water.E  Compiling facts for news reports from around the world is a complex process.

F  And to a certain extent this is still the case.
