During the "salt war ... fought to secure the fertile Po delta from Venice, we arc told that "the duke of Ferrara paid little heed to his domain, but sang and played his music every day as if he had to ... and performed incantations and conjurations "11h a certain me~ser Carlo Soxena , consulting

The duke. unlike his wife's grandfather Alfonso the Magnanimous. entertained magica l rather than rel igious notions of the next world. He even went so far as to snatch a " living saint" - a nun of Vitcrbo whom he had transported by mule and hidde n in a basket to Ferrara -believing that by her agency he could harness the powers of heaven. She reached his capita l on 7 March 1499. and by August two years later he had built a convent , dedicated to St Catherine of Siena, to house his prize.

It is quite consonant wit h this mixture of magical and religious faith that the duke should join in the ritual upheaval of carnival. At

Epiphany he would go masked th rough Ferrara , begging food fo r the poor and meeting with considerable success. His bag in 1473, the fi rst year he adopted the practice. included 1823 capons. 276 large cheeses and 54 assorted calves and heifers. to say nothing of poultry. wine, S\\ ectmeats and waxen torches.

Duke Ercole. who was interested in metallurg~ and alchemy, could cast metal and made firearms like an expert. His military skill was demonstrated at the battle o f Ravenna. for instead of having the artille ry in its usual central p<hllltln (where. a' Mad1iavelli says, it merely pre' ented anyone from seeing anything because of the smoke of it~ !!UllS. and impeded the inlantry). hc movcd it to the sides , anti the

THE VILLA; FOR PROFIT AND PLEASURE

Towards the end of the 1;11eenth century. the villa emerges as an architectural type distinct from the medieval signorial S1ronghold; a new relation with the surroundings is chiefly indicated by the number of doors and windows giving onto the outside world. The villa is no longer shut-in and defensive, for the outer world is no longer savage, dark and, therefore, menacing. Nature has felt the hand of man and is rationally arranged; the villa overlooks a garden.

Fortress features, such as balllemenls, become mere

I]

decoration ( 1, the villa of Cafaggiolo, built by Michelozzo for Cosimo the Elder in 1451 ); the twin· window was introduced at the

ground level of the fayade. Once thought to have been invented by Michelangelo, this type of window is now considered a Michelozzian

innovation, used ... rural villas before it was seen in the town. It belongs to the new concept of villa life in the country.

The basic plan of a villa

would reflect Ille new relation with the setting. II might be one square bklck, with or without a courtyard(~. Villa Cambiaso at Nbaro, built in 1548 by Galeazzo Alessi for the Giustiniani family); it might have lateral wings, a type of which there are many rural examples. as well as the Palazzo Pini in Florence, and which had great influence on Roman villas (5, Villa F amesina, below the Glanlcolo; built in 1508-11 by Baldassare Peruzzi for the Sienese banker Agostino Chigi, it passed 10 the Famese in 1580).

Or design could be married lo surroundings in other ways: by the courtyard, which Alberti says, in De re aedificatoria, is fundamental to villa architecture; or by a loggia al ground level, or a terrace

above (3, the garden frontage of Villa Gamberaia at Sellignano, a fifteenth-century building, later altered; 2, the loggiaed garden-front of the PalazzodelTeat Mantua, built in 1525-35 for Federico 11 Gonzaga by Giulio Romano; 6, loggia and double, great stairway entrarice at Artlmino, hunting lodge of Grand Duke Ferdinando 1, built by Buontalenti in 1594. and betraying elements of the ancient tower motif).

Such elements might be more than residential amenities and have their practical purpose in the productive ruooing of the estate. (7, plan of the Palladian villa at Fratta Polesine, built in 1568-70 on a "conspicuous site," for "the magnificent signor Francesoo Badoero" and known as La Badoera; the

central block is connected by curving oolonnades to left and right lo the level where farm manager and bailiff had their quarters, and to the stables and other necessary outbuildings).

The Rotonda, near Vicenza (8), is also by Andrea Palladio, who built It in 1570 or so, for Paolo Almerico. Here the utilitarian additions are quite separate from the main house and the two basic themes of villa architecture, the solid block and the open prospect, are resolved by means of the four identical loggiaed porches, each jutting from the middle of one faoade and approached by stone steps. They are on the vertical 8l<es of the villa, which run through the cupolaed central rotonda -a pattern charecteristic of Renaissance humanist

architecture and derived from the Pantheon In Rome.

Palladio himsett wrote that the Pantheon was so-ealled "because it was dedicated, after Jupiter, to all the gods or, as others would have it, because it is a model of the world." Certainly every element of his rotonda breathes the two-fold utititasdelectatio ideal which underlay the ~umanist conception of villa life in the country.
