Descriptive Complements

The subject of a sentence can be described by a complement following 得。

我们玩儿得很高兴。 孩子笑得很可爱。 她打篮球打得很累。 他高兴得又唱又跳。

Potential Complements

Think of it as: does this action have the potential to be achieved or not? Have the potential=Verb 得 Complement

(showing achievement) Not have the potential= Verb 不 Complement

(showing failure)

Resultative complements you already know: 到，完，好，清楚，懂， 好

Potential Complements (2)

Red=Verb Blue=Resultative Complement 跳舞太难，我学不会。 Dancing is too hard, I cannot

study it. 你晚上六点能回来吗？

我得开会，回不来 好 , 没问题 , 我回得来 .

这部电影我今天看不完。 健康保险我买不起。

Can I Say 能？ Sometimes. In some cases, using 能 changes the meaning of the

sentence.a: 我一会儿都离不开电脑。 I can’t tear myself away from the computer.b: 我一会儿都不能离开电脑，离开了，电脑会出问题。 I can’t leave or else something will go wrong

Can I Say 能？（ 2 ） You can use 能 when you use the affirmative form of

the potential complement. (Verb + 得 + Complement)

问题 1 ：你听得懂老师说的话吗？回答 1 ：我听得懂老师说的话。

问题 2 ：你能听懂老师说的话吗？回答 2 ：我能听懂老师说的话。

Can I Say 能？（ 3 ） There are some instances where you cannot say 能 , and that is when

you use the negative form of potential complements (V + 不 + Complement)

我的中文水平不高，看不懂中文杂志。 我的中文水平不高，不能看懂中文杂志。

房间的门太小，这张床搬不进去。 房间的门太小。这张床不能搬进去。

我的公寓很小，住不下两个人。 我的公寓很小，不能住下两个人。

Verb + 得／不 + 了 Do conditions permit the realization of certain

actions—IE is something preventing you from doing something.

明天晚上的演唱会你去得了吗？ 明天晚上有课，演唱会我去不了。（不能去） 那栋楼没有水电，住不了人。（不能住）

Directional Complements

Directional complements show the direction in which a person or an object moves. Directional verb complements should be placed after the subjects of sentences (where

the verb usually comes). Some Basic Directional Complements:

上 (shang, to go up) 下 (xia, to go down) 出 (chu, to go out) 回 (hui, to return) 进 (jin, to go in) 开 (kai, to part from) 到 (dao, to arrive) 来 (lai, to come) 去 (qu, to go)

他下楼来。 He is coming downstairs. 他上楼来。 He is coming upstairs. 老师走进教师来。 The teacher walks into the classroom (towards the speaker)

好 As a Resultative Complement

We have already studied how 好 is used to show that an action has been completed. 功课写好了。 晚饭做好了。

Here are some other way to use 好 as a resultative complement: 你们在我家要吃好，玩儿好！ 楼上太吵，我没睡好。

从。。。到 从 1 到 2 Key is: both need to be the same

早／晚 他从早到晚学习中文

易／难 学电脑要从易到难，慢慢儿，来，要不然你会很泄气。

小／大 妹妹从小到大不喜欢吃中国菜。

结果 结果 is a conjunction that shows the result of a

condition that is mentioned in the first clause. 上高中的时候，丽丽一天到晚踢球，不学习，结果高中念了五年才毕业。 王肃常常麻烦别人，可是一点也不愿意帮助别人，结果一个朋友都没有。 弟弟原来听力不好，后来每天听录音，结果听力比我们都好。

或者 Used in non-interrogative sentences

你周末平常找朋友聊天或者写博客。

你或者你的同学得回答这个问题。

你住学校或者住在校外租房子，都可以。

害（得） There is harm that comes from what someone

has done to another person 你昨天晚上没回来，害得我等了你一夜。

他女朋友一个星期没给他打电话，害得他吃不下饭，睡不好觉。

我弟弟把握的手机拿走了，没告诉我，害得我找了半天。

几乎 Used almost exactly the same way as 差不多 , but

is more formal.

几乎每天晚上三个小时学习中文。

几乎一个月没给妈妈发电邮。

几乎从早到晚都在上网。

看起来 你念课文念得很糟糕，看起来昨天晚上你没有准备功课。

这几天张老师常常哭，看起来心情不好，你到底怎么了？

天气很不好，很快就回下雨，看起来我们不能去公园打球了。

听起来A: 天明，你到底来不音乐会？B: 啊，我的功课还没写完，我还。。。A: 听起来你不想来了！

那个公寓听起来挺不错的，你就租吧。

今天我看了电视里的电脑广告，听起来很贵，可是觉得我买得起买不起。
