A. Gaia hypothesis (สมมตฐานวาโลกม กาย – Gaia) The theory that the earth is a living, self-regulating superorganism ; named after the personification of the earth in Greek mythology. The hypothesis was introduced in 1972 by the British chemist James Lovelock, who proposed that, just as our bodies are self-regulating, compensating for changes in our activity and surroundings, so the “body” of the earth regulates itself through the living organisms that control its atmosphere, oceans, and crust (cf. CYBERNETICS). The evolution of the earth’s individual life forms and physical environment, therefore, is not a series of separate processes but part of the evolution of Gaia as a Whole.

a. Principles of verifiability and falsifiability. 1) The Principles of verifiability was at the core of LOGICAL POSITIVISM, It states that a theory that is not at least capable of empirical verification – for instance, the existence of God –is by definition meaningless. However, verifiability was vulnerable to the charge that the principle was itself unverifiable. 2) In The Logic of Scientific Discovery (1934), the Austrain-British philosopher of science Karl Popper also attacked it, but from another angle. He argued that universal propositions, such as the law of gravity, can never be definitively verified. Cumulative evidence and repeated experimental results merely increase the probaaility that a proposition is sound. 3) We accept the theory of gravity not because it is possible to prove that an apple will never fall upward, but because it hasn’t happened so far. Popper therefore proposed falsifiability as a more useful criterion than verifiability. Only if a theory can, in principle, be disproved can it be considered scientifically meaningful, and it is the

unsuccessful efforts to disprove it that give it ever more validity.

Science, psychology of. This has included a number of distinct traditions of thought. Within neo-Kantian German culture in particular (see NEO-KANTIANISM), it has set about answering the question : what makes the universe intelligible? And has focused upon the status of such concepts as time and space. Anglo-Saxon philosophy of science over the last century, by contrast, has been preoccupied with investigating and confirming the validity of scientific knowledge, above all with showing that NATURAL SCIENCE forms the normal, even the only, mode of true knowledge (as distinct from received authority or mere subjective assertion). As a discipline, the philosophy of science has wavered between description (being an account of what scientists actually do) and prescription (what scientists ought to do to advance truth).

An older view, much touted by Victorian scientists, championed the use of INDUCTION as recommended by Francis Bacon. The business of science was to maximize facts ; in due course scientific laws would emerge, almost spontaneously, from the sheer weight of data. The attraction of this idea lay in minimizing the risk of being misled by false theories. Eventually, simple induction was accepted as being unrealistic. Popular in the middle of this century was hypothetico-deductivism, the notion that facts should lead to hypotheses which would guide further investigation leading to the testing of hypotheses, and so forth, in a progressive manner. Sir Karl Popper’s ‘falsificationism’ formed a radical variant on this (see POPPERIAN). Science could only be truly critical if investigators systematically strove to disprove every theory advanced : or, in other words, science could never prove any theory correct, merely falsify all the untrue theories. Popper’s skeptical perception that science could never be sure it had obtained truth was underlined by T. S. Kuhn’s idea that science proceeds through a series of ‘revolutions’ which successively

destroy old theories (PARADIGMS), replacing them with new ones (see REVOLUTIONARY SCIENCE). New theories form radical discontinuities, involving new perceptions (GESTALTS). Old and new theories are incommensurable. Scientific progress is thus unprovable, and science possibly thus appears as relativistic (see RELATIVISM) as other modes of knowledge. The implication that science is unavoidably subjective has been carried further by sociological philosophies, which have stressed that scientific language is itself contaminated by everyday associations, and that scientific reasoning contains elements of rationalization tainted with personal interests and IDEOLOGY. Defenders of a more sophisticated version of scientific objectivity such as Lakatos and Laudan have countered with appeals to the long-term capacity of science to sift truth from error through experimental testing. IRONICALLY, these rival philosophies have revealed that the metaphysical bases of science are far more dubious than ever imagined.

Since the Popper-Kuhn era, therefore, philosophy of science has offered less ambitious accounts of science, with fewer theories of scientific method that claim to cover all scientific epochs, and every different ‘scientific’ activity. Also problematic is the question of what method to apply in deciding which scientific method is the ‘correct’ one, given the historical evidence. In addition, there are detailed investigations of specific scientific activities (theory construction, experiment), and studies in the foundations of specific disciplines (especially BIOLOGY and PHYSICS).
