CPI shows 0.2% rise in January The consumer price index in

January showed an increase of 0.2% over the previous month, with food and beverage prices up 0.7% balanced by a 0.3% decline in the non-food sector, according to Phisit Sitthawong, director-general of Internal Trade Department.

 

Mr. Phisit said the year-on-year index for January increased 1.3%. Core inflation rose 0.2% from the previous month and 0.9% from January the previous year.

The department expected that food prices would gradually increase this year because of a decline in supplies partly due to better prospects for exports. For example, the local price of poultry has soared on the back of export returns obtained from the European Union. The demand for poultry in the EU has increased, replacing local beef as consumer concern mounts over Mad Cow disease.

The year-on-year increase in the monthly food index was led by a 5.8% rise in prices of vegetables and fruit, followed by non-alcoholic beverages at 0.7%, and livestock and fishery products at 0.2%.

Mr. Phisit expressed concern about the possible impact on the Thai economy if the baht strengthened against the US dollar as a result of a slowdown in the American economy.

A strong baht would depress returns for farmers when they converted dollar income to the local currency.

Although the Bank of Thailand has lowered its Projections for the country’s economic growth this year to between 3% and 4.5% from earlier projections of 4% to 5% the department’s inflation target remains 2% to 2.5%. The central bank has projected core inflation this year at 1.5% to 2.5%.

Mr. Phisit said his projections were based on the assumption that oil prices would be stable, interest rates would be low and that the baht would not strengthen to the extent that it raised costs for manufacturers.

“There are signs that local interest rates will remain low in line with global rates. In particular, the US Fed cut the interest rate by 0.5 points yesterday.”
