We have met many people and faced many issues along

the road of Angel House’s growth. Too often we hear:

“One day I’ll get rich, and then I will support you.” We

always respond with kind smiles and sincere prayers.

However, more and more people have realised that

doing good is not reserved for the rich alone. Charity

is the capacity to love, and it has nothing to do with

money.

In this issue we are introduced to the volunteer Fan

Cao. He is a typical example of all the volunteers we

are grateful to have with us at Angel House. He speaks

the language of love via his actions.

Another example is the first charity benefit concert:

“Love and Bless Angel House”. The orchestra (who

volunteered their time), the hard-working organisers

and the audience all showed love through their partici-

pation in this tremendous event.

Giving and receiving love should be the most natural

way of life. Love gives life meaning. Giving is more sat-

isfying than receiving and this is the true essence of

life.

2

Angel House was founded on the 1st of June, 2002 and

is the first non-government and non-profit organisation

in Guangxi to provide multiple services in rehabilitation,

early intervention, education and independent living

skills for young people with mild to moderate cerebral

palsy.

Angel House is registered in the Jiangnan District Bu-

reau of Civil Affairs of Nanning City, Guangxi Province.

Detailed financial information is publicly available on our

website.

Angel House aims to help individuals with cerebral palsy

to integrate into the mainstream social environment.

We offer a unique service which integrates rehabilita-

tion, education, independent living skills and vocational

training to people with cerebral palsy up to the age of

25. Our goal is to foster competence and confidence to

participate in social activities and encourage fulfilment

of personal values to share rewarding lives in main-

stream society.

The core program provides a fulltime, in-house, thera-

peutic service at two specialised centres:

Children’s Development Centre: Children up to the age

of 12 participate in one on one physical therapy, small

group rehabilitation, speech therapy, hands and arm

therapy, general education and early intervention.

Youth Development Centre: Young people aged from 12

to 18 participate in small group rehabilitation, general

education, independent living skills training and voca-

tional training.

In addition, the Community Based Recovery Program

(run in collaboration with Handicap International) offers

consultation and support for families who are unable to

attend the in-house service. Another important aspect

of this program is raising public awareness about disabil-

ity through various activities and initiatives.

The incidence of cerebral palsy is around two per 1000

births. On average, only 5% of children with cerebral

palsy in China have the opportunity to receive rehabili-

tation. At Angel House, we have built a firm foundation

for awareness and understanding of the issues facing

children with cerebral palsy. We are committed to work-

ing with children, their families, other disability support

organisations and government disability departments

to develop services to improve the lives of people with

cerebral palsy.

On the 18th of December 2010 at the Guangxi National

Fine Arts Concert Hall a symphony concert took place,

unlike any other concert to have previously been held in

this hall. It was Guangxi’s first charity benefit symphony

concert, and the first time in China’s history such a large

scale event was held in the name of fundraising for chil-

dren with cerebral palsy.

The concert was a huge success, and was widely report-

ed in the media. The total money raised from ticket sales

was 120,000 RMB-a tremendous contribution to Angel

House’s work to provide vital rehabilitation and educa-

tion for children with cerebral palsy, still a relatively un-

known condition in China.

The concert would not have been possible without the

invaluable assistance of many organisations and people,

and we are eternally grateful to the musicians who per-

formed on the night without receiving payment.

The program was designed to incorporate classics from

the East and the West, including Beethoven’s Egmont

Overture, Mozart’s Serenade for Strings in G Major, Stru-

ass’ Pizzicato Polka, and well-known arias from the Mar-

riage of Figaro. There were Chinese classics too, such

Jasmine Flower, The Butterfly Lovers, The Sea of Red

Clouds Suite, as well as the much applauded Hymn to

the Cloud on the Sun and Lilly of the Valley.

Guangxi’s Fine Arts director, Teng Guo Xiong said the

success of this concert has great significance. He be-

lieves the concert is the first step to building community

awareness and interest in public welfare and the impor-

tance of charity. To combine this with the appreciation of

music was of great benefit to all! Such events will greatly

enrich our culture and encourage a sense of responsi-

bility to socially disadvantaged groups in our society.

He was very pleased with the amount raised for Angel

House and calls on all members of society to continue

giving, and let Nanning lead the way in China as a charita-

ble state capital which cares about all of its people.

Fan Cao: Quiet Strength

Fan Cao has been volunteering with Angel House for a

year. He travels through Nanning’s traffic for an hour

every week to teach computing skills at the Youth Cen-

tre. When I met with Fan Cao he was sitting in front

of three computers, which intermittently beeped and

flashed. “Sorry”, he said “I’m fixing these and I don’t re-

ally have time to stop.” Fan Cao is a busy man. He runs

his own IT company and says his lack of regular working

hours means he’s almost always on the job. Neverthe-

less, he always finds time to come to Angel House.

Sitting by his side, Teacher Huang told me that only

a year ago, the kids didn’t even know how to turn the

computer on. Now, they’re all computer whizzes, and

the teachers often have to enlist their help!

Fan Cao is not his real name, it’s his ‘netizen’ name, but

he uses it in his everyday life because he feels it describes

him best. Fan means sail, and Cao means grass. In China,

grass signifies quiet strength. He says his choice of name

represents his strong will, self confidence and a sort of

anonymity and solitude.

He is also very modest, and brushes aside my admira-

tion and appreciation of the fact that he is one of An-

gel House’s most longstanding volunteers. He has seen

many volunteers come and go, most stay for only three

or four months, some don’t even come back a second

time. Fan Cao told me this really disappointed him, and

made him feel sad and angry.

Many people don’t understand cerebral palsy, and are

frightened by the children’s physical differences. Once

you get beyond that, said Fan Cao, you realise the chil-

dren are just like any others. They were shy when they

first met him, but after he gained their trust, they now

treat him like a big brother, and Fan Cao loves being

around them. He says it’s hard to express why, but when

he’s with the kids he feels happy. He can relax and forget

about all the worries and stresses of his work and eve-

ryday life. He admires the children’s outlook on life and

says they have a great attitude that is different to most

people he meets. Despite the fact that they have often

faced incredibly difficult circumstances in their lives,

they are optimistic and willing to give anything a try. And

when they set their minds to it, they can do anything.

He’s absolutely right: some of the children’s computer

skills are now so advanced they can create and edit mu-

sic, photos and videos.

I ask Fan Cao how long he thinks he will keep coming to

help at Angel House. “As long as possible”, he replies.

“The longer I stay the more children I can help, and I

want to help as many people as I can!”

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ANGEL HOUSE

September, when the heat and humidity retreats. At a

quarter past seven in the morning, the soft sunlight falls

on the table in the dining room of our head office. Here

our children sit, each enjoying their breakfast. Our teach-

ers sit with them, from time to time they patiently and

gently correct some children’s postures. As the old say-

ing goes: “An hour in the morning is worth two in the

evening”. Throughout the course of breakfast, our chil-

dren emerge from their sleepy haze and and one by one

they take up their assistive devices and make their way

to the first rehabilitation session of the morning.

Now our office staff arrives, greeted by the sound of chil-

dren’s brilliant laughter echoing in the corridor. Every

morning Fei Fei and Hui Hui pause along their way to wel-

come the staff as they arrive. Fei Fei is a confident and

optimistic boy who has an outstanding talent for draw-

ing. Hui Hui, sweet and kind, greets everyone eagerly:

“Good morning big sister, Good morning big brother!”

They continue on to the newly-refurbished classrooms,

telling us it’s like paradise now, and they especially like

the colour of the newly-painted walls.

A day in the life of our teachers is not easy. Living skills

teachers tend to the children’s daily needs; rehabilitation

teachers’ work is physically taxing, as they work hard to

improve independent movement. Culture teachers pro-

vide the academic guidance to keep them up to speed

with other children so that when they are physically

able, they can graduate into mainstream schooling. Our

strongest wish is that these children are never looked

down upon. They may be physically different, but their

hopes and dreams are no different from others. Given

the opportunity, these children can do many things that

surpass all expectation.

On Teachers’ Day (September tenth), two reporters

from City Life paid us a visit to interview some teachers.

They felt that our teachers’ valuable work deserves more

attention. The job can be extremely difficult; often their

families have trouble understanding why they carry on.

Our teachers tell us they often feel alone and isolated

in this modern, fast-paced society. Angel House is their

refuge. Some of our rehabilitation teachers face health

problems as a result of the physical nature of their work,

nevertheless, our teachers never give up. Seeing the

children progress makes it all worth it.

Congratulations to the Class of 2011!

On the 2nd of August, Wei Wei, Ying and Rong Rong

graduated from Angel House. Wei Wei will be start-

ing primary school in autumn, Ying will hopefully

stay with the Angel House family and move onwards

and upwards to the Youth Centre, Rong Rong will

soon start to attend a day care centre where he will

no doubt make many new friends. We celebrated

their achievements with a Graduation Ceremony

which was attended by all the staff and students at

the Children’s Development centre, and many family

members. We were delighted to have two volunteer

groups from Taiwan University and Guangxi Uni-

versity give interesting and entertaining presenta-

tions. The children were tickled pink by a mountain

of stuffed toys, including the famous little sheep Xi

Yangyang, which were generously donated by Tai-

wan University.

Angel House takes Stock at our Strategy Planning Meeting

While our students enjoyed their summer holidays, the staff from Angel House put their heads together

for three days in our Strategy Planning Meeting. Our entire staff participated enthusiastically and we

were especially glad Brenda Lisenby was able to make the journey from Hong Kong to attend. Together

we carefully examined every aspect of the organisation and set a Strategy Plan for the two years to

come.

Following three days of hard work, our staff enjoyed a well earned break at Yin Lin Country Villa. This

was made possible by a generous donation from Ken & LaNell Webb (in association with the BEL Fel-

lowship), and our staff was extremely grateful! Over two days our staff enjoyed much needed R&R, and

participated in an inspiring learning program about self discovery and personal development presented

by Wang Qing Fen from the Li Ming Family, an orphanage that is part of the CP Network.

A New Look for the Children’s Development Centre

Our children returned from their holidays to find a newly transformed centre

at Ming Xiu Xi Lu. Over the summer break, a team of volunteers from MMM

International sweated through the heat to redo much of the interior of the

centre. We have minimised our office space in order to maximise areas avail-

able for rehabilitation and meetings. The floors of the rehabilitation rooms

are now permanently fixed which will make cleaning much easier and is much

more comfortable for the children and teachers. Our management staff will

be able to work much more efficiently in the office too. Our sincere thanks to

the donor who kindly financed the materials for these much needed renova-

tions.
