A Woman is a caring mother, beloved wife, lovely sister and a grandmother too. She is the real architect of your home and of our society.

But most of the times she forgets to take care of her own health due to the occupied tasks which she handles at a time.

Too often they neglect even routine medical visits which are essential to maintain good health.

Myth: Cancer is not curableFact: Cancer is very much curable, if detected in earlier stages. That’s why there’s the need for awareness to detect it early.

1. There are various factors that can cause cancer in women. One of the main reasons is obesity

Page 6: Awareness Session on Women Wellness

First delivery beyond 30 years of age increase chances of developing breast cancerGenetic predisposition – about 6‐8% of breast and ovarian cancers seem to be family‐based. The genetic changes are passed down the generation, which will increase their chance of developing cancer

Early menarche (start of menstruation) and late menopause which exposes the body’s cells to more than normal oestrogen. While oestrogen is an important and protective hormone, it has a proliferative effect on cells of the breast and uterus which results in cancer.

Page 8: Awareness Session on Women Wellness

Smoking and tobacco are responsible for lung, oral cancer and also cancer of the upper parts of food pipe (the esophagus and stomach).Multiple sexual partners predisposes to infection Human Papiloma Virus, which may be responsible for cancer of cervix

Page 9: Awareness Session on Women Wellness

Most cancers produce symptoms only when they have reached at least stage 2. If a woman delays her treatment even for a few months, after the symptoms start to appear, it can reduce her survival be several years!! So it is essential that they are made aware of symptoms of various cancers and taught to report to the correct doctor. Regular Screening & Gynecologist Check up will help you in early diagnosis of disease

1. Uterine cancer:Cancer of uterus occurs mostly in older women, who are post menopausal. Even a single vaginal bleeding episode after menopause, must be brought to a doctor’s attention, as it may be a sign of uterine cancer

2. Ovarian cancerThis is very notorious, as it does not produce any symptoms in early stages.In advanced stages, it produces symptoms like bloating of abdomen, constipation, indigestion etc

• The Pap test /  Pap smear looks for cancers and pre cancers in the cervix

• Why do I need a Pap test?•To check the changes that can develop on cervix•To find abnormal changes on cervix which can lead   to cervical Cancer

• When to do :From age 21 to 65 years ‐ Every 3 yearly

Cervical cancer can almost always be prevented, and having regular Pap tests is the key!

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted virus. In fact, most men and women are infected with HPV at some time in their lives. There are approximately 100 types of HPV. Some HPV types only infect the genital area and may cause warts, some cause mild changes in cervical cells that do not turn into cancerSome cause changes that may become cervical cancer if present for many years

Page 18: Awareness Session on Women Wellness

The HPV test can find any of the 13 types of HPV that are most commonly found in cervical cancer.

The presence of any of these HPV types  for many years can lead to cell changes that may need to be treated so that cervical cancer does not occur.

The HPV test is done at the same time as the Pap test by using a small soft brush

The HPV testing sample may be taken directly from the Pap sample.
