CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

“I’ll go to the party.”Con toda seguridad iré a la fiesta.

I’ll go to the party if Tania goes too.

¿Es seguro que vaya a la fiesta?

Pongo una condición: que Tania vaya.

PRIMER TIPO DE CONDICIONAL

If Betis wins eight more matches, they will be saved.

Si se da la condición (y el Betis gana los ocho partidos), se veráel resultado (el equipo se salvará de bajar a segunda)

Veo muy probable que se dé la condición

Open conditionals (condicionales reales o posibles)

IF + present simple, WILL (base form)

Si se da la condición, habrá un resultado en el futuro.

B) Si me invita, iré (seguro)

Condición negativa = a menos que, si no

El verbo va en afirmativa

Normalmente indican una advertencia o un consejo

SEGUNDO TIPO DE CONDICIONALCOMPARA:

a. If I come to the party, you will see Tom.

b. If you came to the party, you would see Tom.

¿En cúal veo más probable que se dé la condición?

En b. el hablante considera más remota la posibilidad de que se dé la condición.

Fíjate en el uso del pasado.

SEGUNDO TIPO DE CONDICIONALIf you came to the party, you would see Tom.

El hablante está imaginando qué ocurriría si…

Se les llama condicionales hipotéticas.Pueden referirse al presente,

If I was in my house now, I would be the happiest manin the world.

O al futuro,

If I finished soon tomorrow, I would go to the beach.

IF + past simple, WOULD (base form)

OBSERVA:

a. If I was in my house now, I would be the happiest man in the world.

b. If I were in my house now, I would be the happiest manin the world.

Podemos usar were con todas las personas.

OJO: Sólo aquí en las condicionales.

SEGUNDO TIPO DE CONDICIONAL

Una forma muy común de dar consejos en Inglés:

If I were you, I would study hard for this exam.

= You should study hard for this exam.

SEGUNDO TIPO DE CONDICIONAL

En el segundo tipo de condicional existe una variante:

If scientists managed to prervent some diseases, wecould live longer.

(Posibilidad tendríamos la posibilidad de vivir más tiempo)

If you came to the party, you might see Tom. (Probabilidad probablemente lo vieras, pero no es seguro)

SEGUNDO TIPO DE CONDICIONAL

COMPARA:

a. If you came to the party, you would see Tom.

b. If you came to the party, you might see Tom.

En a. es seguro que lo verías.

En b. no es seguro, es probable.

TERCER TIPO DE CONDICIONAL

If I had gone to the party, I would have seen her.

¿A qué tiempo se refieren?

AL PASADO.

Son condicionales imposibles o irrealesNo podemos volver al pasado para cambiar los

acontecimientos. Por eso es imposibleimposible que ocurran

TERCER TIPO DE CONDICIONAL

A veces son materialmente imposible:a) If I had been born in Rusia, I would be used to this cold weather. (But I was bornin Spain)b) If I had been born a woman, I wouldhave choosen Linda as a name.

TERCER TIPO DE CONDICIONAL

Y la variante:

If you had come to the party, you might have seen Tom.

Si hubieses venido, a lo mejor lo habrías visto.

Se expresa la idea de probabilidadprobabilidad.

RECUERDA:

El orden de ambas oraciones es irrelevante, aunque la de IF suele ir al principio.

a. If I were you, I would go to the doctor.

Si es así, separa las oraciones con un coma (,).

b. I would go to the doctor if I were you.

Do it yourself:

a. Si apruebo el examen de Inglés, saldré a tomar una copa.

If I pass the English test, I will go out for a drink.

b. Si mi novia me dejara, me pondría depre.

If my girlfriend left me, I would break down.c. Si no hubieras apagado el móvil, te habría sonado en

clase.
