Having sold our old motorhomeless than a year ago, we decidedto get another one. This time it is a smaller unit witha double bed over the cab and adouble bed which converts to adining area at the back, so thatwe dont have to climb downthe ladder in the middle ofthe night to go to the loo.Again a Fiat van with a Decato body

that has everything from a colourTV to a loo in the bathroom thatincludes a shower. So having had it delivered to us onFriday 24th we headed off to spenda night at Catford Dyke the nextday, to camp where I have myboat moored up for the night. It is always nice to just get awayfor a night or so and we enjoyedthe peacefulness on the Broads.

As this was a test drive / trip, theonly problem we need to sort outis the leisure battery, which needsto be replaced with one that willhold a charge better.

So where are we going next time?

I have no idea as yet. It is a caseof watch this space.I was very amused to read the letterfrom Russell Yeomans referring toan article about Cromer in theDaily Telegraph.

I would always be supportiveof Cromer, but I would neverdescribe Norfolk as being inany way, the classiest placeto live in England.

Likewise the letter from PhilipGraham, below about CromersPrince of Wales Road havingroad signs everywhere.

I have to disagree about it being theugliest road in Cromer, it may notbe the prettiest but it certainly notthe ugliest.

Perhaps our readers can tell uswhat they think!

    Dear Editor,

There are 40 road signs on the Prince of WalesRoad between the trafc islands on Louden Road

& Hamilton Road, in Cromer (if you miss theAmazona Zoo sign, do not worry, there isanother fteen feet away).

Dear Philip,Due to the huge success of the last few E.AnglianAir Ambulance dinners at The Constantia CottageRestaurant in East Runton, Val and John areorganising another dinner at The Constantiaon Thursday December 4th. at 7:30pm.

The cost is 22:50 per head for a 3 course mealplus tea or coffee. There will also be a rafe, auction and entertainment from the ConstantiaBrothers & an appearance from a mystery guest.

The E.A.A. A. now run two fully medicallyequipped helicopters serving Bedfordshire,Cambridgeshire,Norfolk & Suffolk. They y an average 4-5 missions daily and itcosts 7.6 million to provide this service, soyour support is essential as they receive noGovernment or National Lottery funding.

For tickets and choice of menu contact Val orJohn Laker on01263 514 509or07771 607 097by November 27th. to avoid disappointment.

    Thanking you

    Val Laker

What prompts me to write is the new signtelling the reader that she is now at thebus station.

As if a large expense of tarmac with a busshelter standing in the corner is not a bigenough hint.

Given that Cromer seeks to attract visitors onewould hope that aesthetic considerations mightbe taken into account by the Council andHighway Authority before they put upyet another hideous roadsign.

    Not a bit of it.

In my humble judgement NR27 9HS is theugliest road in Cromer. I challenge any ofyour readers to name anywhere uglier.

    Yours sincerely

    Philip Graham

The Holy Family will be visited by shepherds& wise men and then go into All Saints forthe real ending to the Christmas story - thePresentation in the Temple followedby light refreshments. This year we are hoping to have real donkeys, sheep and llamas as before. The school is attached to the RoughtonCounty Primary School where manyof their pupils move on to.

It is a very open, active and friendlyplace, with loads of facilities for thechildren which, like so many of thenursery schools in our area couldhappily handle more pupilsonto the roll call.

I would certainly encourage any andall parents of small children to goalong to it andcheck out thisgreat place.

Simons TastersOn Tuesday October 21st, Lis & I were invitedby Simon to come along sample his fayre at aSpecial Taster Night at the Erpingham Arms.

We have always liked Simon and admire his

approach to people and, dare I say, alwaysenjoyed the food that he puts down infront of his customers.

When I asked Simon what the evening wasall about he said: I have been involved inforaging for 10 years and it is somethingI feel extremely passionate about.

When I got the opportunity to take on the headchef position at the Erpingham Arms I seizedit as Paul Wayling (the owner) had beenlooking to change direction and wantedthe food to totally reect the pubs locationwithin one of the most beautiful areasin the country.

He basically gave me carte blanche to createa menu which incorporated many ingredients

foraged and sourced within 1 mile of the pub.To be able to combine two of my passions(foraging and cooking) in one job role isa fantastic and very satisfying thing to beinvolved in achieving in a great place.

These were the tasters we were offered:Starters;Home-made soft cheese with nettles, crispbread & tempura white dead heads (v)

Brown trout, creme fraiche & horseradishpancake.Dandelion, nasturtium & wild cress salad (v)Erpingham wild mushroom & chestnut pate (v)

Local pheasant & wild garlic pesto skewersErpingham Winter bean houmus with

    mangelwurzel crudites (v)Main course:

Rabbit, smoked ham & red pepper roly-poly

    Home-made local beetroot & rosehip arancini (v)

Hunter gatherer stew with tarragon polenta

Erpingham Sidld boar rillettes with pontackdipping sauce

Quince jelly & Norfolk white lady skewers (v)

Warm salad of red mullet, tempura craysh, north sea shrimps & seashore vegetables

Desserts:Duo of proteroles, Erpingham bramble whiskey& chocolate ganache (v)

Erpingham crab apple jelly & Norfolk Chantillyclotted cream (v)

Wild plum ice cream with hedgerow jam (v)

Unfortunately, we were very late arriving sodidnt get to sample every dish but those we

did were very original and really delicious.

This friendly local pub has, to the best of myknowledge, always been a good local pub.

Talking to a quite a few people on the eveningand they all gave Simon the thumbs up for hisgreat fayre. Well worth trying out.

If you are over 65 orhave underlying illnesssuch as asthma ordiabetes then pleasebe sure to GET THEFLU VACCINE.

Flu can have seriouscomplications in olderpeople and this is exa-cerbated in fallingtemperatures.Ask your surgery formore details. Aim to keep the living room at 18 to 21 degrees. If unable to afford to heat the whole house allday then focus on the living room during theday & the bedroom just before going to sleep.Hot water bottles & electric blankets are alsovaluable (but obviously not both together!!)

Eat well - food provides fuel for generatingthe energy the body needs. Try to eat regularhot meals and have plenty of warm drinks.

Remain indoors during the most severe weather- even more important if you have heart orrespiratory problems.

such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonias anddepression. As well as this icy conditions alsoincrease the risk of falls - something that canhave catastrophic consequences in olderpeople with thinning bones.I want to give some simple advice on how to stayboth safe and warm this winter. Keeping themin mind may not only benet yourself but canbe borne in mind when thinking about how tosupport older neighbours and relatives.

Staying Safe-Practical Tips on Avoiding Trips

It goes without saying that the frequency of falls

increases in the winter. Falls during the wintermonths also carry with them the additionaldangers of hypothermia and broken bonesdue to slips on the ice. By considering thefollowing these risks can be minimised:

Avoid taking risks in icy conditions. It is simplynot worth having a fall for the sake of putting outthe rubbish or milk bottles in heavily icy conditions.

If you do feel able to venture outside then besure to wear decent shoes with a good gripand above all do not rush.

Stock up your larder (or the larder of yourrelative/neighbour) with plenty of tins andlong life milk to help avoid unnecessarytrips out during the worst periods.

Within the home itself steps can also be takento minimise risk. These include removing rugs& electric cables on the oor which can act ashazards, ensuring the light is turned on prior tonight time visits to the toilet and discussingany dizzy spells with a GP to see if thereis any specic cause for these.

If you or a relative has had a fall then pleasespeak to a GP about the possibility of being referred to a falls service.

This service is run by a variety of differentprofessionals such as physiotherapists andoccupational therapists who aim to reducefalls risk through balance training andeliminating environmental hazards.

Staying WarmOlder people may be either reluctant or unableto heat their homes adequately. However giventhe increased susceptibility to illnesses duringthe cold weather already mentioned it is vitalthat no expense or effort is spared to achievehealthy temperatures. Here is some advice onbattling the cold and the problems it brings:

A Winter SurvivalGuide for OlderPeople- How to stay safeand warm this year!

Over the past few weeks a change has been afoot. There is a certain chill in the air. The leaves havenow not only exchanged their vibrant shades ofgreen for hues of yellow, brown and orange buthave also started to carpet the streets and laneswith their autumnal tapestry.

Autumn itself is fast ebbing away & winter willsoon be upon us in full force. Despite the factthat there is undoubtedly a certain stark beautyto the colder season on the Nth Norfolk Coastthe period is not without its down side.

Winter presents many potential health challengesparticularly as we get older. We know that coldertemperatures increase the incidence of illnesses

9-9-9 Where AreYou?The Overstrand & Cromer Community FirstResponder team would like to remind localpeople to make sure that their houses can befound easily and quickly should they have tocall 999, especially now that the clocks havegone back, with the nights are drawing in.

Because we respond locally in the areas wherewe live & work, we often arrive within the rstfew minutes following the 999 call being made.

We can normally nd the road where the incidentis located fairly easily, but the biggest problemwe often face is actually nding the correct housewhich can mean vital minutes are wasted tryingto nd the house. Its even worse when houses

only have names and not numbers, as we oftenhave to search the entire street before we cannd the correct property.

The advice for local residents to help ensure thattheir homes can be quickly and easily identiedby the emergency services are:1.Make sure your house number is large enoughto be seen from the road side. If you cannot seeit from the street, the emergency services wontbe able to either.2.Where possible place your house name andnumber on a wall or a gate post next to the roadrather than on the door. Many houses havenumbers on the side or on the door, whichcannot be seen from the road at all.3.Cut back foliage regularly so that your number

can be seen clearly. Bushes can hide the number, especially in the spring and summer.4.Ensure that your house name and/or numberstands out - especially at night.5.Help neighbours to make their house numbersvisible. The emergency services will be able tond your house quicker if your neighbourshouses are also clearly numbered.

Dementia FriendlyCouncilThe NNDC has announced it is to become aDementia Friendly Council.

In partnership with the Norfolk Dementia FriendlyAlliance, the Council will be delivering awarenesstraining to staff to enable them to understanddementia and the issues that face sufferers ofdementia and their families and carers.

Steps will be taken to support NNDCs markettowns, alongside Town Councils, to build comm-unities which are dementia-friendly and toprovide an opportunity to support dementiasufferers in managing their day to day life.

John Lee, NNDC Cabinet Member for Health

and Wellbeing, said: Dementia can have adevastating effect on those with the disorderand their families who are often carers.

The chance of developing dementia increasessignicantly with age; our District has one of theoldest populations in the country so it is vital forus to work together to make positive changes toensure they are not without support.

The Council will review its Health ImprovementStrategy which sets out the vital role it plays inreducing health inequalities & improving healthfor residents with a focus on preventative activity.

There are around 800,000 people in the UKwho have dementia.

The chance of developing dementia increasessignicantly with age. One in 14 people over65 years of age & one in six people over 80,have dementia. It is more common amongwomen than men.

17,000 people have been diagnosed withdementia in Norfolk (source: Director ofPublic Health, Norfolk County Council)

6.If you have to call 999 in an emergency - ifpossible get someone to stand outside the houseto watch out for help arriving and to ag themdown. Or turn on the hazard lights of your carif its parked in the drive or outside the house.

At night turn all the lights on in the house, this will make it stand out more.

If local people can take notice of the above adviceit will help us, the Ambulance crews and other999 services to nd houses much more quicklyin an emergency situation, saving vital minutesand even lives.

If you need any help or advice in order to makeadjustments or for any information regardingthe work that CFRs do, please contact:Jim Begley (CFR Coordinator)

All Change InPanto-LandFor the last40 years theMundesleypantomimehas beenpresented as

a fund raisingevent by theFriends of theMundesley Lifeboat.

But for a variety of reasons the lifeboat havedecided to give up this very popular show.

Not wishing to see this local tradition die out,Pat Nearny & Ian Cashmore, who directed theshow last year, have taken up the challenge andwill be producing this seasons pantomime.

Mr Nearny said that he was surprised by thelifeboats decision not to continue with thismajor fund raising production.

Perhaps it is time to make a change.

New blood will be injected into the show and

hopefully give the pantomime a shot in thearm and a new lease of life.

Aladdin will take to the stage at the CoronationHall in Mundesley this season.

Again written by Nigel Holmes who scriptedlast years sell out shows.

He promises the usual digs and wisecracksat the expense of the local dignitariesand personalities.

The yearly chance to prong a few peopleon the bubble busting panto spike.

As always the pantomime is expected to raisethousands for charity, but this year the proceedswill be split between the local First Respondersand the Air Ambulance, who both do a

    wonderful job for the community.

Once again, the Mundesley Playerspulled off a truly great performanceon Thursday October 23rd ofJ.B.Prestleys play.

Lis and I attended and scored theperformance a 9 out of 10. Whyyou may well ask - not 10.

The reason being that a friend, did notlike the performance not being on thestage but in the round in the middle

of the hall with the audiencesurrounding the players.

Ian Cashmore,Above on Right, as Inspector

Goole, gave us a truly great performance asdid Gerry Robins as Arthur Birling,Above with his back to the camera.

Louise Stevens played his daughter excellently,Above with her ance, played by Neil Ellison, and the ever present maid, Edna, played byVal Newell andBelow, being interrogatedby the Inspector.

Paul Reynolds as Arthur Birlings waywardson played his part prfectly and once againNeil as a regular Mundesley player was abrilliant star.

Without going into too many details the plot ofthis intriguing play, written 70 years ago, is thatevery member of the Birling family, as well asthe future son in law, Gerald Croft, were guiltyof apalling behaviour towards a woman whohas committed suicide. The Inspector warns, not only the family, butalso the audience: We are members of onebody. We are responsible for each other. And I tell you that the time will soon come when,if men will not learn that lesson, then they willbe taught it in re and blood and anguish.

The whole performance was brilliantly directedby David Ross, who having directed many otherMundesley Players performances in the past, pulled off a great show indeed.

One of the audience suggested later to me, thatthey felt the play would be better suited to beingon the radio but for me, seeing it live wouldalways be better than just listening to it.

How and where Inspector Goole came fromcontinues to puzzle me and the fact that he wasnot really an Inspector was quite a shock, andwhat his motive was I will never know.

Thank you players for a great performance andfor all the great work from those backstage -nothing at all could be faulted. And thank you

very much to Paul Damen for these photos. PK

    An Inspector Calls

Barbara Steisand& Neil DiamondExperienceAn appreciative audience ambled into thePavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier. By anystandards it is an interesting alliance.

The tribute to Barbara Steisand covered 5 decades

of her career & featured all of her chart-toppinghits & favourites from her award winning movies:Hello Dolly, A Star Is Born, The Way WeWere, and Funny Girl. She is one of the fewentertainers who have won an Oscar, Emmy,Grammy and a Tony Award.A truly remarkable voice.

The show did in fact open with Mr Neil Diamond, who reigned for the rst half. Dressed in black& white, the ultimate attire. He was incredibly entertaining and with his easycharm, his audience took to him immediately.

One of his rst hits in 1966Solitary Manwasfollowed by Cracklin Rose, Forever In BlueJeans, Sweet Carolineand had us all waving, singing and clapping along.

Mr Fisher Stevens looks, sounds and moves likehis mentor. It sure was A beautiful sound.

You stole the show young man, we all loved you.Thank you.

Cindy JohnsonEditor:I would like to thank Cindy Johnson very muchfor covering this show for us all.
