PROFILE

As a constructing architect, I have worked in planning and supervision of building projects. I have been involved in several complex projects, where I have demonstrated a sound understanding of the various project stages. I have particularly worked on projects in the Middle East, thus building vast knowledge of Arab culture and building traditions as well as completion of large-scale projects in collaboration with a broad variety of international collaboration partners.

EXPERIENCE

My experience spans within all project phases - from the preliminary concept to detailed design and construction. Having worked on several mixed-use highrises in Riyadh, I have gained good insight into the complexity applying to these types of projects.

My contribution to the development of the 34-storey tower, Villas in the Sky, Saudi Arabia, was from the fi rst project stages, through the detailed design stage to follow-up and supervision on site. I’m currently stationed at Henning Larsen Architects’ Middle Eastern offi ce in Riyadh, where I have has been responsible for follow-up on and supervision of the company’s other high rise buildings in King Abdullah Financial District and project management of multiple prominent projects of the offi ce.

Saudi Embassy Sarajevo

The new Saudi Embassy in Sarajevo is a highly complex and

sofi sticated búilding, the project management of which

is has my responsibility. The project has required detailed

attention to the specialized geometry of facade components

as well as a highly specifi c security system. I have drawn on

my experience from working on the update of the security

system and extension of the Danish Embassy in Riyadh.

The new Saudi Embassy is envisioned as a small diplomatic

village complete with the courtyards and alleys typical of

Arab cities. The design ambition is to make the embassy a

window to Saudi Arabia, with an attractive, inviting front

yard providing Saudi Arabian hospitality while maintaining a

high level of security.

Villas in the Sky

My contribution to the development of this 34 storey tower,

spansfrom the fi rst project stages through the detailed

design stage to follow up and supervision on site. Villas in

the Sky is a mixed use 34-storey tower placed at a unique

location in the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh,

Saudi Arabia. Situated as one of the last buildings in the green

thoroughfare, the Wadi, and in a transition zone between the

public square and the Wadi, the tower will become a strong

local landmark. Formally, the square fl oorplates allow for

structural integrity and the programmatic fl exibility that is in

great demand for highrise constructions.

Crystal Towers

I have played a vital role in overseeing the current contruction

of the Crystal Towers. Within a new fi nancial district in Riyadh

the towers are located in a singular location between The

Financial Plaza, the fi nancial centre of the masterplan, and the

Wadi - a verdant pedestrian thoroughfare. The two 18- and

26-storey Crystal Towers are connected by a raised podium

which allows direct passage between the Financial Plaza

and the Wadi, creating a clear and dramatic entrance to the

towers’ lobbies and providing a shaded outdoor meeting

area. The towers have separate lift cores, making the buildings

well-suited to accomodate two fl agship tenants as well as a

number of additional tenants in each tower.

KING ABDULLAH FINANCIAL DISTRICT

MASTERPLANS

Henning Larsen Architects' masterplan unites the Arabian urban traditions with the modern metropolis giving the Saudi capital Riyadh a public open space and a characteristic skyline with a new outstanding landmark.

Henning Larsen Architects has devised a set of guidelines for sustainability.

The heart of the district is a transformation of the Arabian wadi Hanifa transversing the area. The district will become an active and attractive urban space comprising financial institutions, residential and recreational areas, shops, restaurants, hotels, conference and sports facilities.

The district will feature something as unique as a Saudi Arabian monorail connecting the various areas of the district. All buildings and monorail stations are linked together by air-conditionedfootbridges above street level enabling walking distance to all meetings in the Financial District –quite extraordinary for Riyadh.

KING ABDULLAH FINANCIAL DISTRICT

VILLAS IN THE SKY

’Villas in the Sky’ is a mixed-use 34-storey tower placed at a unique location in the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Situated as one of the last buildings in the green thoroughfare, the Wadi, and in a transition zone between the public square and the Wadi, the tower will become a strong local landmark. The form imitates the structural ideal of a high-rise building. It is a polygon with four equal sides allowing for very flexible spaces. The shifted upper plates create a jagged facade that visually differentiates the various programmes in the mixed-use building.

The first three stories are dedicated to retail and connected to the Wadi, ground level and the footbridges, the Skywalks, for easy access and optimal connection for users. The next 14 stories are programmed as office space and the top 12 floors house 22 residential units.

The curtain wall glass facade has angled panels to allow the use of more transparent glazing oriented towards the ground, while a sloping light-coloured cladding provides a shaded interior and reduces the energy consumption of the building. The building is designed to achieve a LEED Certification upon completion.

The Gem Building is a unique small-scale landmark surrounded by large buildings in King Abdullah Financial District. The size of the building is adapted to human scale and its crystalline form and faceted facades enhance its quality as a shining beacon.

The Gem has a mixed-use programme: three separate buildings include a residential block, an office block and a multi-purpose podium with a terrace overlooking the garden - this is linked to the green pedestrian thoroughfare of the district.

The cluster of gems creates spaces for fluid, flexible circulation around and through the buildings. As a small-scale icon, the form and intimate scale of the building provide a unique destination and meeting place; the facades enhance the expression of the building and creates shaded retreats from the desert sun.

Wrapping the faceted exterior, a high quality metal mesh fabric provides solar protection and weather-resistance to local sandstorms. In addition, the geometry and siting of the building creates shade between the volumes. Combined with sitewide strategies for water-efficiency and reclamation, the energy efficient technologies support several sustainable initiatives. The building is designed to achieve LEED Certification upon completion.

Within a new financial district in Saudi Arabia’s capital city, the Crystal Towers are located in a unique location between the Financial Plaza - the financial centre of the masterplan -and the Wadi - a verdant pedestrian thoroughfare.

The orientation of the two 18 and 26-storey Crystal Towers creates a visual and physical link between these elements which feature prime office and retail facilities.

The two towers are connected through a raised podium that allow direct passage between the Financial Plaza and the Wadi, creating a clear and dramatic entrance to the lobbies and providing a shaded outdoor meeting area. As the two towers have separate lift cores, the building is well-suitedto accomodate two flagship tenants and a number of additional tenants.

Due to massive solar exposure in the desert climate, recessed, scaled, crystalline apertures are calculated to minimise solar heat gain and associated cooling requirements while optimising views to the surrounding plaza and landscape. To root the building in the region and contribute to a sustainable approach, a light local stone cladding with a long lifetime and low maintenance costs has been used. The project is designed to achieve LEED Certification upon completion of construction

CASCADING CONDOS

RESIDENTIAL

Cascading Condos is a mixed-use building bordering the ring road surrounding the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD). The building comprises a combination of residences and commercial spaces.

With its unique location, the building creates a transitional zone between KAFD and greater Riyadh, establishing a clear entrance to the district.

Cascading Condos is composed of three 'stacked' volumes, which create a dynamic terraced canyon with the lowest point in the centre of the plot. The design embodies the movement from the massive scale of Riyadh to the more protected interior and exterior spaces of the building.

The southern part of the structure - the tower - reaches an extreme vertical elevation, representing a monumental focal point in the financial district. The unique terraces create indoor and outdoor spaces for residents, employees and visitors. In the northern, lower part of the building, the offices are situated, while the tower is designed to comprise residences. In the base, the public functions are connected to the other buildings in the district via the sequence of footbridges, Skywalks.

THE BUTTERFLY

COMMERCIAL

Situated along the periphery of King Abdullah Financial District, The Butterfly marks the transition between the new district and the remaining part of Riyadh. The building comprises a mixture of residences, commercial and retail functions.

The recessed position of the buidling creates a leisure park and oasis amidst the bustling commercial activity and a convenient pick-up/drop-off area for local commuters. The two levels at the base are dedicated to retail and connect to the sequence of footbridges in the district, Skywalks. The next five levels are reserved for offices, while the top six floors comprise luxury residences.

Open cuts through the base create lush green courtyards and protection from the sun, encouraging visitors, employees and residents to congregate in comfort without being exposed to harmful radiation. The cuts also allow light to penetrate deeply into the building and provide the retail areas with spectacular views of the financial district.

The building is sheathed in louvers that prevent overheating and create a distinctive moiré effect along the facade. This effect mirrors the appearance of shimmering butterfly wings, animating the building for inhabitants and passers-by.

MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

COMMERCIAL

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is a modern office building with a number of specially constructed rooms for social functions. Its introvert exterior as well as paradisiac interior reflect the Islamic architectural tradition of the Middle East.

The building design origins in the quadratic shape of the classical Arabic house and is adjusted to fit a triangular lot surrounded by modern infrastructure and to face Mecca. The building stands on a large plateau and appears very closed from the outside, whereas the inside opens to a diversity of small and large, intimate and monumental rooms with fountains and luscious atriums.

The large simple white interior wall surfaces are counterbalanced by the building's richly patterned marble floors that constitute the main ornamentation. The atmosphere of the rooms is one of serenity and varies with changing angles of lighting, soft splashes of the fountains and light that changes with the sun over the course of the day and the year.

MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

DANISH EMBASSY OF SAUDI ARABIA

COMMERCIAL

The Danish Embassy of Saudi Arabia includes chancellery and residential quarters in a small, separate complex. The building is Danish in style, the ochreous colouring and white corner ornamentations being rooted in Danish public building tradition.

At the same time, the complex is subject to Saudi building regulations and geared to local user needs and climatic conditions. The colour is also that of the desert sand.

The recognisable typical local interaction between external privacy and internal hospitality, is represented in the building’s general aspect and details alike. A hierarchy of inner and outer rooms is formed, offering varying degrees of privacy.

The ambassador’s residence opens up to a private atrium, which is separated from public areas on the embassy grounds. Visitors to the chancellery pass through a small oasis of palm trees into the double-height, octagonal central room where the embassy functions are located.
