The Edwards family descended from Iddon ap Rhys Sais of Cilhendre, Shropshire. They adopted thesurname Edwards in the early 16th century. Thomas Edwards (1592-1667) of Cilhendre and Plas Yolyn,was one of the civilian envoys deputed by Thomas Mytton to negotiate the surrender of Anglesey (May-June 1646) and Harlech (March 1647). His fellow envoy was John Jones the Regicide. He also servedas governor of Wrexham in 1647. He was the father of Thomas Edwards (d. 1668), who married JohnJones's niece, the daughter of Watkin Kyffin, the estate agent of the Chirk Castle estate. His heiress, Julie,married John Morrall. Josiah Morrall of Holywell, surgeon, owner of Plas Yolyn when he died 1745,left debts of £1,400. His widow, Margaret sold the estate to William Challnor of Cilhendre, Dudleston,Shropshire, in 1748. Cilhendre was demolished in 1794.

The papers of Morgan Llwyd and Colonel John Jones were not originally part of the archive of theEdwards family of Plas Yolyn. The link that connects their papers to Plas Yolyn and Cilhendre was JohnJones, the Colonel's son by his first wife, Margaret, daughter of John Edwards of Stansty. John Joneslived for some years at Bryn y Ffynnon in Wrexham, where Morgan Llwyd had previously resided, andhe spent the later years of his life with his cousins, the Edwards family of Cilhendre, to whose estates theMorrall family succeeded in about 1730.
