The Eco Design Fair in Shanghai is a grass-roots, solution-based event to raise awareness of environmental issues and to help make it easier for everyday people to make everyday sustainable lifestyle choices.

The event showcases individuals and businesses involved in advancing Shanghai’s sustainability movement but what about the future?

In order to inspire China’s future design professionals to take on the challenges of environmentally-friendly design, the inaugrual Eco Design Student Competition was organized by the Eco Design Fair organizers in April 2009.

The competition received 32 submissisions from four academic institutions. Each entry explored the theme “Responsible Consumption” within a wide range of design realms, including fashion, graphic, product, landscape, and interiors.

A sincere thank you to all the sponsors, organizers, volunteers, schools, and jury members who helped to make the competition possible.

And thank you to the students who show us that our future is in capable hands.

Organic food is good for both human health and sustainable environment, but the organic premium price limits consumer demand. In the current market system, the majority of agricultural profits are filterer layer by layer to middle agents; farmers get unfair income.‘OrganicRepublic.cn’ is a new service responding to concerns about sustainable food. It makes organic food more accessible to urban people through online farms. It enables direct farm marketing through e-shopping and offline logistic service, which can save energy and cut the price. Once consumers are satisfied with the produce and become partner of the farm, they will get more reasonable price for long-term buying ; this will provide a more stable market for farmers at the same time. Also partners will be invited to experience farm life such as pick-your-own. The website wii be designed to forward consumer information to farmers’ mobile phone as SMS, without disturbing their work.Through these interactions, ‘ O r g a n i c R e p u b l i c . c n ’ generates mutual trust and support. By reconnecting human food to nature system, reconnecting food producers and consumers, it benefits local environment and economy. This sustainable food system will promote responsible consumption and contribute to the ongoing initiative of sustainable rural development in China.

JEFF & RACHEL“ Only entry to address the social [human] aspects of a concept. Excellent presentation. Viable idea that could scale easily. Addresses a real need. Relevant to the community. Messaging and communication thought through. Overall, excellent concept. ”

JAIME“ This project has a high analytical level in visual and interactive communication, as well as an improving the life cycle system. [This project] shows high standards not expected in a student project. ”

CATHLEEN“ Congratulation for this project, it’s a great idea! I hope it can be realised into reality. ”

RENAUD“ Very interesting work. The idea of a network is very good and could improve the market of organic food. Another highlight is the notion of local production. The position of the organisation, between farms and consumers is well argued. ”

EMILIE“ Very well matured idea. China is in need of that. Very professional and looking further. This is a real project that has to be developed. ”

SECONDPRIZE

This is a design about how to reduce water which is used for washing hands in public places such as restaurants, hotels, offices and so on. The goal of this design is to increase the awareness of saving water. It can show truly and clearly how much water people use for washing their hands each time. At the same time, it will make some inconvenience to people who use too much. It will cut off the flow automatically when people use more than 450ml and indicate people that they have used enough water for washing hands. If people haven’t finish washing, they need to wait for a little long time to finish it. That means they need to pay time for extra water.

JEFF & RACHEL“ Strong presentation of a simple idea. Realistic application. Interactive, builds awareness, aesthetically pleasing. Has potential to change behavior and make people think. Has strong scalability. Material consideration could have been thought through some more. What if the materials and components could be environmentally friendly? Who is going to install these units and where? Could people in need some how be incorporated into the execution plan? ”

JAIME“ Spectacular presentation - such realism that people could think is already available in the market. Nevertheless as a designer and user, my question would be if I can be really convinced how much water I am spending by seeing a small container being filled every time I am washing my hands. This concept has an orientation to communicate the idea of saving water. ”

Page 15: Eco Design Fair Student Competition Spring 2009

1

CATHLEEN“ Very good design: convenient and stylish at the same time. It looks like a professional work. Continue to imagine similar project like that! ”

RENAUD“ This is a nice work. The product itself is not sustainable through its manufacturing but it insists on the fact that awareness is an important component of sustainable development. The design and presentation is also very professional. ”

EMILIE“ Very smart, very professionally presented and technically well thought out. Excellent way to touch people. The only difficult thing would be the marketable side. Who would really buy it? Would it be something to include compulsorily in “public spaces” design? ”

THE ATRIUMAs a consequence of a deep study about the building structure and human behavior analysis , there are 3 important reasons to justify theselected area for the atrium. 1 = it’s a very dark part of the building2 = because a relaxation space is needed3 = the north part of the building is less exposed to sun and to summer heat

The two words “Building” and “Harmonious”and refer to the way this project used to integrate natural elements Sun, Water and Wind with daily life in a sustainable way. Each of the element has been used in an efficient way to improve life quality inside the building. The atrium has been thought to maximize the light and minimize the lost space. The void becomes smaller and smaller from top level to ground floor.

CORRIDOR’S POOLSThe Corridors’ columns are the set for small water pools with the same cleaning function of the waterfall. Over each pool there have empty space for student’s work display.

RENAUD“ Nice presentation for which the main interest relies on some original design and sketches. I wonder about the use of the fountain. Where will the water come from? If comes the roof, then will the rain amount be enough to provide for both thermal system and fountain? Is the use just in summer? The ceiling/flooring system is interesting but no mention is given about the source of the energy. The opening of the inner building is interesting and seems to solve the problem of lack of light. “

JEFF & RACHEL“ Dynamic and evocative presentation of concept. Well conceived. A solid holistic approach to a promising solution. ”

CORRIDOR’S POOLSThe Corridors’ columns are the set for small water pools with the same cleaning function of the waterfall. Over each pool there have empty space for student’s work display.

OUTSIDE VIEWThe building has been covered with aluminum insulated board which reflects heat and keep the interior temperature.

DISPLAY ROOM The glass block is the main material for the rooms touched by the water fall, creating a pleasant view inside.

SELF HELP COFFEE AREA The Café area is simple just for a small break or short conversation with a fast coffee to have a rest.

THE ATRIUM SPACEThe Atrium is a half open-half close space for communication, relaxation and rest during a break time. The full height space is closed on top by the skylight which gives natural light to the area while the water fall cleans and refreshes the air.

CHANGNING WEATHERJune & July = the hottest months and with heaviest rainfall January = the coldest month (1°C), however snowfall is rare Sun hours, even in July, never surpass the number of 7.

SKY LIGHT

CEILING HEIGHTIt has been reduced to fit the imbedded radiant panels. With consequent less energy loss in heating and cooling process.

IMBEDDED RADIANT PANELSA special gel liquid, easy to get hot/cold, goes through the bobbin and warm/cool the room by radiant action = fast, no bacteria, low cost, low maintenance and very low heat loss

EMILIE“ This is more a research job than a real design idea. The technical side is well handled and it contains all the items every building designer should include in a project. It lacks a bit of sensitivity and it is only presented in its sustainable systems sides. ”

CATHLEEN“ Good imagination! You imagine very well the “social part” for the common areas. It’s a convivial and a warm place. ”

JAIME“ This project has the qualities expected in terms of creativity, technology use and functionality as well as aspects related to aesthetics all in a highacademic level. ”

Chinese economy has been growing faster and faster during the passed few years. At the same time, overconsumption of goods and services has exploded, creating serious environmental damages. However, only a few people are aware of the relationship between consumption and environment degradation.

This advertising project helps people realize that the only green, environmental, sustainable and ethical consumption is the one related to our needs and not our wants.

ADVERTISING

EMILIE“ The idea so smart. So simple. No material waste but paint required. It just pushes people to think of everyday unavoidable actions. ”

RENAUD“ It was not so easy to judge this project according to the criteria and due to the fact that most of projects were product designs. The visual graphic is efficient, explanations are smart. Since awareness is an important part of sustainable development, this project is interesting. “

HONORABLEMENTION

EMILIE“ The idea and design are excellent, as resorts slippers are obviously single use objects. It is very simply eco-friendly and witty. It would uses local material and hands, no shipping. The only worry would be how slippery can be the object? ”

JEFF & RACHEL“ Material focus is relevant. Bamboo also has anti-odor properties not addressed. Design not fully worked out. Seems difficult to execute. Questionable whether product would hold up. Cost advantage?”

My design is ecodesign and LCA analysis of slipper design.

It is analytical tool - it taught me how to analyze materials, manufacturing, use, disposal, LCA interpretation and design process. My report summarizes the contents of this analysis and helps me make a better design.

When we travel, we often reside in hotels. A lot of things will be ready for us in our hotel room. If we could bring some travels supplies, it would reduce ressources used by the hotel. It is environmentally friendly. I designed the slippers as retractable ; it can reduce the storage space, which facilitate their transport.

In the 21st, Bamboo is he best eco-friendly material. Compared with trees, bamboo grows rapidly, absorbing carbon 4 times more than common trees. Bamboo can reduce harmful gas emissions from the impact. As it is strong and solid, it can be used for a long time.It cannot be recycled but used Bamboo can be ground into powder for the earth.

JEFF & RACHEL“ Well thought through regarding materials and design. Mixed use creates more interaction with the environment. Consideration of solution from user’s perspective is good. Graphic treatment not as strong as idea. ”

CATHLEEN“ Good design, the installation of the park is interesting, so I think it miss some “social area” to socialise more the people around this project. ”

The basic idea was to redesign a park but with low cost. Then, we started looking into user needs and eco-friendly because we want sustainable and affordable design gives the park its unique character. The recycling / reuse idea is very important to us. But we also want to offer a functional and stylish park - a park that is a fun place for not only elderly but also children and young people to come everyday. The park is divided into 3 sections : Resting Area, Elderly Fitness / Exercise Playground and Toddler Playground.

ELDERLY FITNESSEXERCISE PLAYGROUNDUser-friendly fitness equipment can simply keep elderly fit. Wide space can satisfied elderly exercise needs.

REDESIGN OF A PARKlocation : ANSHUN Rd. - DINGXI Rd.

TODDLER PLAYGROUNDSafety was an important consideration in our choice of location for the playground. It is situated as far as possible from the adjacent road so as to ensure children can play without danger of cars or bicycles or motocycles. The bench are made of used container, they are stylish yet low cost.

RESTING AREAThe special curve shape tent is made of truck tarp and links the entire park - it is inspired from “Huilang”, the curve corridor in traditional Chinese gardens. Simply walk under the tent, you can get to park’s another side and same time enjoy different park view from different perspective. It is to take a shelter in the rain and get away of strong sunshine. Supporting poles doubles as solar energy lamps as well. Our choice of location was intended to allow parents and grandparents a clear view of the playground so they can keep an eye on the kids, while also enjoying the communal space and social interaction under the trap. A public bench was specially designed for this space.

EMILIE“ The object is very sustainable in its process, maybe not in its lasting lifetime, but overall the idea development is efficient and clear. The design is simple and seems to answer well to its need. ”

RENAUD“ This is an every day product but widely used by everyone. The flowchart is well explained. Reuse bamboo and towel gourd scraps for packaging is interesting. The product is interesting, hope it can be sustainable in time. ”

This cruet is made of the bamboo, bamboo is kind of plant that easy to plant and grow fast, the predominant capability of water protection and toughness makes bamboo replace wood in some products. Cheap, low temperature and low pressure in production are the advantages that can substitute metal and ceramic in cruet design with the requirement of ECO-friendly.

This design is one cruet divide to two spaces and fills with two seasoning; it can save the material, energy and the space of transport, because it combine two cruets to one.
