Pastor’s Notes

With the new changes in our youth programs developed

by Sister Ann, some important observations have been

noted.

We have required our Religious Education children to

attend Sunday Mass, a precept of the Church. If they

have excessive absences, they are removed from the

program because they are showing no commitment to

Jesus’ request to “Do this in memory of Me.” It is hoped

that in the future their spiritual maturity will develop to

commit themselves to Christ. Yes, there are a few

cheats. For example, some church goers have been

putting in the children’s attendance envelopes. May

God forgive them for abetting and cooperating in placing

our children and their parents into grave sin.

Since this new policy has taken effect, however, a more

positive result has happened. Many parents have

returned to the Church and there has been a significant

up-tick in parishioners trying to regularize their

marriages in the Catholic Church. I know many people

have either converted or reverted into the Catholic faith

by being exposed to the power of the Blessed

Sacrament.

In our Religious Education Program, as is also done in

our school, the children also are able to participate in

the Sacrament of Reconciliation on a regular basis. The

Religious Education Program meets Monday through

Thursday. To optimize a more frequent exposure to the

Sacrament of Penance, I will be moving

the Tuesday Healing Mass to First Fridays in

September. There will be no other evening Masses

during weekdays except for Holy Days of obligation. We

are also developing programs for middle school and high

school ages which, once matured will begin to use the

church on Friday evenings. It is also hoped that we can

develop young adult programs especially for those

college graduates who cannot find jobs so that they can

make use of their faith in finding employment. So far

the middle school and high school programs seem to be

growing significantly for nascent youth groups.

As you know each year our Bishop assigns a missionary

to come and speak to us in the hope of raising

desperately needed funds in foreign countries. An old

friend of mine, who was sent by Cardinal Spellman

during World War II to start what became Catholic Relief

Services, told me an interesting story. A very poor nun,

who spoke poor English, used to approach him each

year for crucifixes to give to her newly professed

sisters. These crucifixes were an important sign which

they wore on their habits. He would personally pay for

them, but over they years he was getting overwhelmed

with her requests for many crucifixes. He joked with me

that he was very happy to be moved back to the United

States to head the Catholic Relief Services because he

could not afford her any more. Well, this little nun be-

came St. Teresa of Calcutta.

Since I have come here to St. Veronica’s, I noticed that

whenever we have this annual mission collection, if the

mission priest is not well understood, he gets significant-

ly little in the mission collection. For example, our last

mission priest collected $4,092 while our collection for

the MOPs gained $9,448. I do have a good knowledge of

what this missionary priest is doing and what circum-

stances he is living under. He does not have a retreat

center or places for the poor to stay. He told me that

whenever he says Mass, always outdoors, an unexpected

wind sometimes blows all the consecrated Hosts off the

altar and onto the ground. Who really needs the money

more? Could Father Louis Raj be the next Mother Tere-

sa? We had a real missionary come here. He works in

the bush. He is uniting tribes to bring harmony among

peoples, the best way to keep ISIS out of the country

where he serves. I realize that getting on EWTN is a mod-

ern way of advertising, but I am quite sure it does not

reach the 4th poorest country in the world. I have per-

sonally witnessed poverty in the boondocks of the Philip-

pines. I spoke with nuns who fed their orphans first re-

sulting in their not eating sometimes for days. The early

stages of mission work is not only dangerous. It involves

big sacrifices. Another priest friend who taught moral

theology in Benin had to return to France after getting

sick. All the new seminarians, before their studies be-

gan, were brought to a cemetery and shown the graves of

missionaries who died shortly after their arrival from vari-

ous diseases when they came to bring the Word of God

to this nation.

Please be mindful that this is still going on and remem-

ber these hard working men and women who have dedi-

cated themselves to God in evangelizing people who

have never known about Jesus our Savior

Healing the Wounds of Abortion

Rachel’s Vineyard Post-Abortive Retreat The psychological and spiritual wounds of abortion can

be sharp, deep and crippling. You may feel a deep numb-

ness and may not be able to name the pain or recognize

any of the symptoms. It can also have a devastating im-

pact on the father or grandparents of the aborted child

and friend/s of the mother. You do not have to continue

to hide in shame and fear. Rachel’s Vineyard’s Retreat is

a chance to focus on this painful time in your life through

a supportive non-judgmental process, in an atmosphere

of confidentiality, understanding, and compassion. It is

designed to help both women and men experience the

mercy and compassion of God.

If you have suffered through an abortion and have isolat-

ed yourself from healing and forgiveness, you might con-

sider attending one of our retreat weekends. For more

information, contact Judy Warenkiewicz @ 732-536-

6871. All inquiries are strictly confidential.
