Questions we’re often asked about genuineDuPont Teflon® non-stick surfaces.

Use and CareQ. How do I care for cookware with a Teflon®

non-stick surface?

• We recommend that the surface be ‘conditioned’ with a thin coat of cooking oil before the first use and after thecookware has been washed in a dishwasher.

• Wash with warm soapy water after each use. Although thesurface will appear to be clean with just a wipe of a papertowel, soapy water will get rid of any grease or foodparticles that may remain.

• Stubborn spots can be removed with a plastic puff or pad.Although DuPont Teflon® Platinum and Teflon® Platinum Procan withstand abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, usingthem should not be necessary.

• On DuPont Teflon® Classic and Select, use only plastic, woodenor nylon utensils. Teflon® Platinum and Teflon® Platinum Proare metal-resistant, so it’s safe to use metal utensils. On allsurfaces, avoid cutting food in the pan.

CookingQ. Why are medium to low cooking temperatures

recommended for DuPont Teflon® non-stick surfaces?

• As they perform beautifully with medium to low cookingtemperatures, DuPont Teflon® non-stick surfaces allow forenergy-savings and more environmentally friendly cooking.

As an additional benefit, medium heat achieves the bestcooking results. Generally, high heat doesn’t cook faster, it just wastes energy.

Q. Can a DuPont Teflon® non-stick surface be over-heated?

• DuPont Teflon® non-stick surfaces can be heated continuouslyat temperatures of up to 260ºC without damage.

• Like all non-stick surfaces, deterioration can occur if a pan is left on a continuous heat of more than 260ºC for a prolonged period of time. This temperature alone is well

above the normal cooking range; as a comparison, fats,butter and cooking oil will begin to scorch and smoke at about 200°C.

SafetyQ. How safe are DuPont Teflon® non-stick surfaces?

• DuPont has for many years placed top priority onprotecting the safety and health of employees, customers,and the public. Consistent with those values, prior to theirmarket introduction all products are evaluated for potentialhazards, including testing of many products at thecompany’s Haskell Laboratory for Health and EnvironmentalSciences. This includes extensive testing of all DuPont non-stick products used in consumer applications.

• The United States Food and Drug Administration hasfound them acceptable for conventional kitchen use, ashave health regulatory agencies throughout the world.DuPont knows of no record of serious, chronic or acutehealth problems related to the use of non-stick cookware.

Q. Can fumes from over-heated cookware be dangerous?

• All fumes can be harmful. However, fumes from an over-heated DuPont non-stick coating are no more harmfulto people than fumes from over-heated cooking oils. Fumesfrom over-heated Teflon® cookware do not contain ozonedepleting substances including CFCs.

Q. What if someone accidentally eats a particle of a non-stick surface?

• DuPont non-stick coatings are specially formulated toresist chipping and peeling. This will only happen if thecookware has been misused. However, if it should occurand particles are accidentally consumed, there is nodanger. The material is non-toxic and inert so it will passdirectly through the body without being absorbed – justlike food fibre. In addition, the Food and DrugAdministration has stated that consuming these particlesposes no health threat.

A healthy decision.

Genuine DuPont Teflon® non-stick surfaces provide virtually fat-free and oil-free cooking and we all know that less fat meansless calories and cholesterol. So not only is it easier to cook withTeflon®, it’s healthier too.

If it doesn’t say Teflon® then you’re simply not getting
