Scope Inform the students of the following scope requirements.
At the completion of this lesson you (the student) will:
Action: Situational Training Exercise
Scope: Given an operation order, with or without fragmentary orders(FRAGOS), field training site, issued individual equipment, individual and crew served weapons. During a continuos 24-houroperation, cadre will evaluate student performance on three ofthe thirteen Common Leader Combat Skills (CLCS) during theSTX.
Safety Safety in training is the most important factor during the execution of this STX. Unsafe
Requirements acts observed by students, academy or evaluating personnel may be justification toreduce or stop training until such unsafe conditions can be eliminated inaccordance with Army, TRADOC and local safety regulations, will assess safety on an
on-going basis and adjust training as necessary to limit student exposure to injury orpotential life threatening situations. Safety briefings will be conducted prior to the STXand emphasis given to the following areas: Storms, which may cause flooding in lowlying areas, tornadoes and/or lightening. Munitions, including the handling andtransporting of blank ammunition and pyrotechnics. Heat and/or cold weatherinjuries. Safely working around operating machinery, tools and vehicles. Animal andinsect bites, poisonous plants, and fire prevention. All injuries will be reported to apredetermined safety officer (Officer or NCO) on site and processed in accordance with(IAW) academy policies and procedures.

Environmental Training will be conducted in the proper designated areas only. This ensures natural
Considerationsand environmental resources are maintained properly for continued training realism.Using the proper designated areas also eliminates conflicting or controversial situations. All spills of hazardous property and POL products will be reported to the environmentaloffice. The activity responsible for the spill will contain the spill to reduce furtherenvironmental and training area degradation. Equipment will be operated to conform toenvironmental operating permits. Improper disposal of trash and refuse, inadequateclean up of training areas, pollutes ground and water resources. This may result in apotential health/safety hazard.
Evaluation Cadre will evaluate students performance on three of the thirteen Common LeaderCombat Skills (CLCS) during the STX.
Instructional Discuss the following issues from the mandatory training annex during the STX:
Lead-inBattlefield Stress; Operations Security; PMCS; Combating Terrorism;Electromagnetic Environmental Effects; Suicide Prevention; AmmoAccountability, Safety, and Security; Directed Energy Warfare Safety Awareness;Heat, Cold, and Hearing Injury Prevention; Information Systems Security;Fratricide Prevention; Safety in Training.
NOTE: The students will be rotated on a regular basis to ensure that each student participates in
the training as the squad leader.

ment See equipment list from POI.
Special Understand the commanders intent of the operation order and comply with all
Instructions orders given from the students who are assigned leadership positions. Safety First.
Procedures Concept of Operation
a. The STX will be a student led exercise, with primary responsibilities for leadingsubordinates in common soldier, common engineer, and technical missions. Thestudent platoon leader and platoon sergeant will establish and operate a command post(CP) in a bivouac site, establish and maintain a mission board, manage and issuemission directives to student squad leaders, maintain personnel and sensitive itemreports, provide briefings and updates to subordinate leaders as Opposing Forces(OPFOR) and Intelligence (INTEL) situations change.
b. The Small Group Leader (SGL) and supporting academy staff will evaluate studentleaders, monitor all phases of the STX, be responsible for the actions of student leaders, and enforce/correct safety policies at all times. The SGL will issue and control all aspects
of the exercise by selectively integrating daily situation updates, periodic intelligence reports, operationalsituation reports, and preselected missions to the student PLT LDR/SGT for execution. Thescenario annex is designed to provide the SGL with enough OPFOR material that the scenario canbe tailored to fit the abilities of the students, time, weather, installation support missions, and otherfactors that may impact on training. The STX will include as a minimum, the missions anddirectives established. Logistic support requirements for those tasks are identified in annex F or
the SGL can identify different tasks that will fit into time constraints. The SGL isresponsible for issuing missions to the fullest extent possible to create a highlydemanding, stressful training environment.
a. Given an extract of a unit's METL and commander's training assessment, the studentwill develop a risk matrix for each task to be trained during the STX and submit them to their SGL forreview not later than 1 hour prior to the start of their mission. Students will be evaluated on their abilityto perform the following enabling learning objectives (ELOs) throughout the development andexecution of the STX, IAW USASMA BNCOC Common Training for Leaders:
i. L302 - Military Leadershipii. M303 - Combat Ordersiii. M304 - Troop Leading Proceduresiv. M306 - Battle Drillsv. P301 - Risk Managementvi. T301 - Battle Focused Training
NOTE: The Tass Battalions will not set up bivouac sites or any perimeter defences due to the time
restrictions on the STX. Students can eat at their normal mess units and sleep at their normal
billeting areas. Use maimum time on the three evaluated CLT tasks for each student. The SGLS
can act as the aggressor teams.

Deployment
a. Given an OPORD, required TA 50, individual weapon and strip map, the students willdeploy to a predetermined training area by mounted five-mile tactical road march.Student leaders will brief subordinates on current mission directives, OPFOR/INTELinformation, and issue written and oral warning orders as supporting information isprovided by their SGL. Student leaders are responsible for: checking subordinate'sequipment for completeness and proper wear, monitoring proper marching intervals, maintaining light and noise discipline, establishing front, rear and flank security asappropriate, and establishing passive and active measures to be taken in the event of
attack by enemy aircraft or NBC play.
b. Given required pyrotechnics, blank ammunition and an aggressor team, students willbe evaluated on their ability to lead battle drills while serving as a leader in a simulatedcombat environment, IAW USASMA BNCOC Common Training for Leader ELOs: 1.Direct reacting to contact. 2. Direct breaking contact. 3. Direct reacting to ambush. 4.Direct reacting to indirect fire. 5. Direct reacting to NBC attack. 6. Conduct a tacticalroad march. 7. Occupy an assembly area. 8. Apply troop leading procedures. 9. Movetactically. 10. Consolidate and reorganize. 11. Employ air defense measures. 12. Defend.
13. Conduct continuos operations. This task should be integrated to its fullest extent during thedismounted deployment to the training area. Some or all of these learning objectives may beintegrated into other missions during the STX to provide additional evaluation opportunities for allstudents.
Execution:
a. Given an OPORD, the students will establish a perimeter defense to include: securingthe bivouac site, establishing communication with appropriate headquarters, locatingfighting positions while maximizing terrain features and enemy situation, locating fieldsof fire, drawing and submitting sector sketches to the unit commander/operations NCO,establishing challenge and password, developing an execution matrix for three possiblelevels of threat as defined in FM 71-1 and FM 71-2.
b. Given an OPORD, students will establish a bivouac site to include: a camouflagedCP, run communication wire from CP to road block(s), platoon sergeant's position, andLP/OP's, if established, erecting a mess and platoon sergeant's tent with camouflagecovering, setting up warm-up tents if required, establishing water points with water trailer, tent and stove during winter, setting up hand washing points, trash collection points, ammo storage area and immersion heaters as necessary.
