Sinfonietta Fantastique

Message from Yip Wing-sie, Music Director

Sinfonietta Fantastique! The word Fantastique always takes me into a world of colourful imagination, not unlike the scenes in Berlioz’s symphony by the same name, orthe romping fairies in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, or even the artistic spirits of the City Hall we addressed and acknowledged at our concert forthe 50th birthday tribute to the venue earlier this year. Whenever we are surrounded by music, it is as if we are somehow transported intoanother world – a world of wonder and fantasy, which gets more and more magnificent with each concert you attend.

Imagination is one of the most essential if not crucial elements associated with the enjoyment of music, especially classical music, where mosttimes, we find no help from words or titles. With your own fantastic associations, the music comes alive, starts forming shapes, and evenbecomes characters!

So, this season, I have chosen a lot of works which will take you on wonderful scenic journeys –some easier to trek and others more taxing, but all unique. The works of the great masterssuch as Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms take us to a different place every time. How else hadtheir music managed to stay on top of the charts for centuries? Debussy and Ravel – suchincredibly beautiful hues of colours – an effortless time-travelling experience; Tchaikovsky andStravinsky – the stories are vivid from the notes themselves!

Come with your friends and families – and let us take you on a Journey Fantastique!

2006

First launched in 2006, the Artist Associate Scheme aims to provide a platform for intensive collaboration with an individual artist or group fromdifferent arts disciplines during the course of the season, when new ideas and initiatives are explored to expand beyond the horizon of classicalmusic. A diverse range of artists have since participated in the scheme, including composer of classical/jazz/pop/Chinese music Ng Cheuk-yin,Grainger Quartet, composer/multi-media artist Samson Young, conductor Jason Lai and pianist Colleen Lee.

We are proud that these artists have since continued to become pillar figures in their respective fields. We continue to work with them in differentprojects and together, we are building a cultural tomorrow.

Work in ProgressWork in Progress

WORK IN PROGRESS

Facebook

The term Work in Progress generally refers to partly finished products that are at various stages of the production process. In theworld of professional musicians however, the “production process” never ends, as rehearsals follow performances, andperformances lead to collaborations.

This September, Hong Kong Sinfonietta bares all and lets you into insider stories of how musicians live through their professionalpaths. Within the cosy environment of ArtisTree, artists including Yip Wing-sie, musicians of the orchestra, Artist Associates of HongKong Sinfonietta, and other local musicians, both established and in-the-making, will share with you not only the music they haveprepared, but also the stories of their own “work in progress”. Who knows, Hong Kong Sinfonietta might even open somerehearsal moments for all to see!

We will be ready with the details of our WORK IN PROGRESS@ArtisTree in August.Check our Facebook site and our website!
