  • Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) is home to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and is Malaysias concert hall devoted specifically to classical music. Located in the PETRONAS Twin Towers, it was officially opened on17th August 1998 by the patron of the MPO, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali and former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Designed by Cesar Pelli, the hall takes its inspiration from the traditional shoe-box shape of the great 19th century European concert halls with the magnificent Klais Pipe Organ providing a spectacular backdrop to the halls stage and platform. The hall seats 920, which includes box seats, 20 luxurious corporate suites and a royal suite. Acoustics experts Kirkegaard and Associates have incorporated unique acoustical devices into the design to maximize the halls natural qualities, leading Yuri Temirkanov, Chief Conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, to remark that its beautiful, the sound is warm, woody and kind its one of the best halls Ive played in.

Celebrating its 15th Anniversary this 17th August 2013, DFP plays an integral part in the music and cultural landscape of Malaysia and the city of Kuala Lumpur. It attracts audiences and continues to enthrall listeners as it has done since the day it first opened its doors. In addition to stimulating and enriching concerts by the MPO, DFP has hosted some of the worlds leading artists and orchestras. These include the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, conductors Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Sir Andrew Davis and Yehudi Menuhin.

World renowned orchestras that have performed in this beautiful hall include the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, BBC Symphony, Vienna Symphony, Sydney Symphony and NHK Symphony. As a chamber music venue, DFP has also attracted such eminent ensembles as the Belcea Quartet and Shanghai Quartet.

Beyond classical music, DFP has hosted such prominent artists as Harry Connick Jr, the Count Basie Orchestra, Yellowjackets, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Pink Martini, Gotan Project and sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar. In addition, Malaysian artists including Tan Sri S M Salim, Dato Sheila Majid, Dato M. Nasir and Dato Siti Nurhaliza have mesmerised audiences at DFP.

Concerts from the energetic Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) and the annual Seni Festival featuring local music and traditional performing art forms continue to be hosted at this venue.

Always innovative in its programming, DFP has introduced many new ideas including the first ever Artists-in-Residence (the Borodin Quartet), the crowd pleasing DFP Showcase and DFP Spotlight series which have featured international stars such as Laura Fygi, Zakir Hussain and Larry Carlton in addition to local talents like Noryn Aziz, Rachel Guerzo, Yuna, Aizat, Najwa, Hafiz and many others.

DFPs success is also attributed to its exceptional architectural design, superior acoustics and recording studio modelled after that at Abbey Road. Bryn Terfel, the Welsh bass-baritone star said of it: DFP excels in its wonderful acoustics and good lighting that creates a very intimate setting. I only wish I could put the hall in my pocket and take it with me everywhere I perform. It is truly a pearl in the Malaysian musical heritage.

  • This new 2013/14 Season of the MPO marks another important milestone, as we celebrate the 15th year of the opening of Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), home of the MPO. It was on17 August 1998 that MPO gave its maiden performance in the beautiful DFP. Over the years we have seen a steadily growing audience amongst the young and old, a testimony of the quality and variety of MPOs mesmerising music.

I am indeed delighted and proud to learn that this new seasons opening Gala concert will feature the world premier of a new composition by our child prodigy, Tengku Ahmad Irfan, who will also perform Prokofievs Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the most technically-difficult concertos in the piano repertoire. As a walk down memory lane, the MPO will perform Strauss Don Juan, which was played 15 years ago at DFPs inaugural concert. Together with the Great Violin Concertos series, featuring leading violinists and works of Shostakovich, Mozart and Brahms, to name a few, and the continuing popularity of POPs/Special concerts, the MPO promises to deliver yet another exciting and not-to-be missed season.

I believe the MPO has done well in promoting and developing our talented Malaysian youths. Through the MPYO, more new musical talents have been unearthed and the platform provided for their artistic nurturing and enhancements. Although the rigours of training are there, I believe that the experiences are rewarding.

With the continuing gracious support of MPOs main donor PETRONAS, and our loyal sponsors, supporters and friends, I am sure that we will be able to sustain and share the wonders and joys of MPOs music to the community at large, not forgetting those for whom such simple joys of music are not easily accessible nor savoured.

Please join me in welcoming the 2013/14 Season of the MPO and let us all indulge in the new Seasons offerings!

  • MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

    Dato Mohd Medan Abdullah

Welcome to a magnificent and harmonious new season with our very own Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO)!

As the MPO celebrates its 15th birthday, I am delighted that we have stayed true throughout the years in our purpose to share the depth, power and beauty of great music.

This new 2013/14 Season allows us to once again reimagine the tremendous energy and power of music. Always innovative and looking to broaden our artistic horizon, the MPO has commissioned a new work by a young Malaysian prodigy who will also play one of the most difficult concertos in the piano repertoire. The annual DFP Seni Festival will once again see the MPO collaborating with local artists and crossing musical boundaries by giving traditional performing arts groups the opportunity to play together with the orchestra, thereby realising Malaysian content aspirations.

This season will also be Music Director Claus Peter Flors farewell season and we will see him conducting three of Mahlers most

popular symphonies. After serving 6 years as Music Director, Maestro Flour will leave an indelible stamp on the MPO.

The positive energy of music fills Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS as we continue to showcase a splendid repertoire of international conductors, soloists and musicians with Stphane Denve, Steven Osborne and Carl Davis returning to play in this beautiful hall.

This celebration of music would not be possible without the unwavering support and commitment of our beloved Patron YABhg Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Bt Haji Mohd Ali, our main donor PETRONAS, our sponsors, partners, loyal subscribers and all our wonderful audiences.

Thank you so much for your support in this journey of appreciating the beauty and energy of music.
